@yellowbeach: I mean, from an adult perspective, somebody should really be calling social services on that family. I don't care how many kids you have, you don't not realize until mid-flight that you're short a kid!

@wrkbrk: I still cry every time I see Home Alone - and I'm 42. The idea of being forgotten on Christmas is just so so sad. Lol.

@erinbaderin: I'm so jealous that your kids like Elf! We introduced it to DS last Christmas when he was 6, and he just couldn't get into it. Maybe this year he'll like it?
He does *love* Home Alone and the new animated Grinch.

Thanks to everybody who made me feel like my kids were old enough for Elf, they are DYING laughing (mostly at the physical comedy, they’ve apparently never seen anything funnier than Buddy getting hit by a car, but I’ll take it).

@JennyPenny: a really, super cute Christmas movie came out last year called Noelle, on Disney Plus. It’s a lighthearted comedy, but it is all about Santa Passing away and his son inheriting the job and not being enthused about it—which is where Noelle comes in, who tries to show him how awesome being santa is (I’m leaving out the second half, but it’s cute). Anyway, it’s G rated and my kids loved it. If they believe in Santa, you could just say before it starts that it’s all totally fictional, etc.

@wrkbrk: My kids want to watch Home Alone year round, but DH insists it’s a Christmas only movie (he also says Die Hard is his favorite Christmas movie, haha).

Last year I considered Elf and The Santa Clause but I wondered if those might raise too many questions. I didn’t know there was a new Grinch. My four year old is terrified of the Grinch and is still talking about him from last Christmas.

@erinbaderin: woah! thank you for this clarification. I didn't realize there was a new grinch that wasn't the Jim Carrey one. I did end up buying the original yesterday cause the blu ray price dropped to $7. Hard to beat that!

Thanks for all these suggestions everyone. I've built out a nice list and I'm really excited to start this tradition with my kids and even see some movies that are new to me :)

I love The Tangerine Bear! It's not a popular movie at all, but super cute and we watch it at Christmas every year.

I love all these suggestions as DD is 18 months so I'd like to start a Christmas movie tradition with her as well! Definitely have to try Arthur Christmas and I feel like she will like The Polar Express, though I'm not a big fan.

We watch The Nightmare Before Christmas all year as we are big fans (me and my DH have Jack and Sally tattoos) but to me this is a Halloween movie and not really a Christmas movie.

The original Grinch and the new Grinch. Hard pass on the Jim Carrey one. The Snowman is so wonderful, we watch that year-round. Loving all the people saying Elf, I’m going to try to introduce the kids to that this year. I stand by my opinion that the Nightmare Before Christmas is NOT a Christmas movie but we introduced it at Halloween and my four year old loves it. Rudolph and the Muppet Christmas Carol. I’ve just realized that most of the Christmas movies my kids like are like 40 years old.

I really love Arthur Christmas and The Muppet Christmas Carol. DS loves, loves, loves the newest grinch. DH is a fan of the original Grinch and the Jim Carrey version (which I hate). I also really love the polar express, the animation is a little weird but made up by Tom Hanks voicing so many of the characters.

Oh I love watching Christmas movies with the kids. We introduced Elf last year and they loved it. We started Home Alone and thankfully the kids didn't like it in the first 10 minutes because it was a bit much for their age. Oops. We also do Frosty, Rudolph, both original Grinch and the latest Grinch. When do you think kids are old enough for The Christmas Story?
