@rolypoly: I kinda think this is just normal at that age (rolling over and needing to lose swaddle) and he'll get used to it. I remember sleep disruptions for losing swaddle, rolling, sitting, standing, etc. They just need to get used to the new sensation (what are my hands doing here? Why am I on my belly?) and then for us it was back to good sleep as normal.
It sounds silly but for my son I realized he liked his hands to be covered because he liked to rub his face and feel material. So we put socks on his hands and eventually one hand for a long time. Till like 8/9 months I guess? It eventually became a sleep cue for him. The sock would go on his hand and his eyes would get heavy. 😂

I would try as hard as I could to not nurse/introduce new sleep crutches unless it's something you're willing to let stick (such as a pacifier). I know that's so hard to do because you just want to go the F back to sleep! But I see it as short term misery for long term benefits.

Also in the 4 months is ok for CIO camp! So is my ped. We did it at about 4.5 months.

I never did this and maybe I'm totally wrong - but since tummy sleeping is ok once they can roll can you put them down on their tummy? I know if they roll on their tummy they can stay there but can you place them in the crib that way? I would think that flailing arms and waking from rolling to tummy and all of that wouldn't be as disruptive/an issue if they start on their tummy. I never did this so it's more of a question than a suggestion.

And that's AMAZING that he started STTN like that so early. That sounds like a heavenly dream!

@gingerbebe: We tried that Halo trick with LO2. LO1 fell for it but LO2 isn't having it.

@rolypoly: I'm right there with you. She seems super uncomfortable with her arms out. Like what the hell am I supposed to do with these?

Thanks guys. I'll look into the zippedeezip (after I return the wholly ineffective merlin magic suit :) ). I was doing the miracle blanket no arms at first right after his roll, but it wasn't really doing much I thought.

I actually think I'd feel comfortable crying it out (and did eventually with my older son), but my concern is I don't think he's looking for parental attention when he's waking - I think he's legit uncomfortable with his arms out after being so comfy and swaddled for so long. I just wish I could come up with a non-nursing way to settle him back down and relax him when he wakes being so uncomfortable!

Yeah I'm in the Ok to CIO at 4 months camp. He may discover self soothing techniques like sucking on his fingers or sleeping on his tummy. Both my boys discovered tummy sleeping at this age. I also introduced a lovey at this age - it became helpful with teething. DS1 chewed and sucked on his lovey. DS2 sucked his fingers and chewed on a Wubbanub.

Both boys dropped the swaddle before 4 months but did it with the Halo swaddle sack. I left their arms out and wrapped the wings around their torso. This made them feel sorta swaddled and gave them the comfort of wearing a sack like they were used to, but had their arms free.

Tonight will night 5 for swaddle weaning my little one. She rolled at 15 weeks, good thing we planned to start that night anyway. I just ordered the zipadee since they can wear that when rolling and hoping it will help. She is all congested too, so I have been lucky to get 2 hour stretches lately. She only wants to eat once over night too. Other times she has no interest.

Your LO might be the swaddle and 4 month regression all at once. I think 4 months is fine to CIO, personally. My pedi feels the same. I think I have read 4-6 months is the best time to sleep train if you are going to do it. I am hoping to avoid it with this LO. But we did right before 4m with LO1.

SOS! Help! I reached out to your crew with my last baby and you were live savers, so I thought I'd throw my new baby's sleep situation at you to see if you could help.

Situation: Just turned four months. We've gotten SO LUCKY with sleep so far - he just started sort of miraculously sleeping through the night around 6/7 weeks. He would sleep 8:30 pm - 7 am, it was SO RIDICULOUS. And yes, we knew how lucky we were at the time :) He was swaddled tight and loved it. Fast forward to last week, when buddy rolled over in his swaddle (!!) before he was even four months old. What?? We were totally unprepared, and had to cut out the swaddle cold turkey. Since then night sleep has been total chaos. He wakes every few hours, and can't seem to be settled with anything but nursing, even though I know that he clearly doesn't need to nurse, since he didn't eat at night for the last 2.5 months. We tried the Merlin Magic Sleepsuit, and he literally rolled onto his tummy within a minute in it. I think we have a herculean baby on our hands.

Our problem is that unlike our first kiddo who we had to pull out all of these sleep tricks on (rocking, sucking on our finger, shushing in ear, etc. etc.), this reacts to literally zero sleep tools (besides nursing) because we've never had to use any. Which means it's all falling on me, and I fear I'm giving him bad habits. We're 11 days into this post-swaddle hell and I need help! He's 4 months and 1 week - way to early to CIO, right? I can't go on nursing him every two hours, especially when I know he doesn't need it.

Thoughts?

Last night was night 1 of sleep training and it took half an hour to get her to sleep in her crib. She then slept until 12:30am and I did timed checks. Four 5 minute checks, three 7 minute checks and one 10 minute check before she finally fell asleep at 2:15am. She then slept until 7:30am. Hopefully tonight is a lot better because she full on screamed covered in snot for the whole hour and 45 mins. I'll report back with how night 2 goes tonight.

I would say consistency is key. We co-slept & nursed to sleep up until LO was 15 months old. At that time, we started putting her to sleep in her room but would keep our regular routine of bedtime stories. Some nights were so bad that I crawled into her crib with her to get her to sleep in her room. We decided that DH would put her to sleep so she wouldn't cry to nurse & it actually helped significantly. LO is 17 months old now and no longer screams when I leave the room after bedtime stories. She will give me a hug & a kiss, tell me "night night" & go to her spot in bed & DH will stay with her until she falls asleep which is generally in about 10 minutes. It was very difficult in the beginning but since we were like clockwork when it came to our new bedtime routine, LO now knows and anticipates what our routine is for nighttime. Good luck! :goodluck:

When did you last try it? We haven't sleep trained yet but last night LO was being difficult so we left him. He was asleep within 10 mins. I think now he's over a year old he understands he's not been abandoned and he does have some settling skills so it might be easier than if we tried when he was younger. He does have a dummy though.

my daughter is just over 13 months and is impossible to put to bed and sleep through the night. we try to get her in bed by 7:15 but without fail it always takes at least an hour with at least 3 attempts of putting her in her crib. She always ends up screaming and fighting it until we pick her back up again. this goes on several times until she either falls asleep in our arms or she settles down enough in her crib and we have to rub her back for like 20 mins. and of course as soon as we lift a hand off her back she wakes up and cries. I'm all for CIO except the few times we've tried it she gets so worked up that she makes herself throw up after about 3-5 minutes. My husband and i agreed to start hardcore sleep training her again tonight, and as i write this he is still up in her room holding her half an hour later as she fusses and her first attempt in the crib was at 7pm.

Has anyone else had a 1 year old that was awful at sleeping that somehow got it fixed? i NEED sleep.

Also worth noting that she did sleep through the night for a few weeks when she was 9 months old, but since then its been a battle at bedtime plus 3 wake ups that take a good hour or two to get her back to sleep. Not ideal when we both have to get up by 6:30am for work everyday. Ugn, I'm SO tired.

@Mrs. Pickles: well, I think my pep talk scared him because he has fallen asleep on his own without crying! He woke up that first night about an hour and a half after bed and fussed and half cried for about 20 minutes. Fell back asleep. A few more times since Thursday, he would wake up and do that for about 10 minutes or less! It's been totally no big deal

This was my fear too, and we let LO2 sleep in the RNP in our room far too long because of it. We have white noise in both rooms with doors closed. I will often see LO1 move around on the monitor when LO2 cries, but she doesn't fully wake or need us. I'm not sure if she's actually hearing LO2 or if it's just coincidence.

We ran the house fan so there was some white noise, but sometimes big sister would still wake up hearing little sister cry. We just sort of warned her about it, told her little sister just needed to learn to go to sleep, and to try to ignore it. In the mornings sometimes she would tell us she heard little sister crying last night, but it didn't seem too disruptive for her.

Marpac Dohms inside the room and if you've got a hallway bathroom, turn the fan on in there. Otherwise, get another Dohm or a box fan in the hallway. Usually my son sleeps like the dead until somewhere in the early AM, like 5am. I've vacuumed, slammed doors, done all sorts of stuff after he goes to bed and he hasn't woken up.

Any chance LO1 could spend a long weekend at grandma's or similar? Then white noise machines in each room and one in the hall.

With LO#1 we used CIO to get him to sleep, but he was already having longer stretches, sleeping in a bassinet

LO#2 will be 4months in a few weeks and he's still hardly sleeping, he goes to sleep ok and sleeps in the RNP then wakes up and wants to nurse every hour and will only sleep on me

Their rooms are across from each other.

I want to transition him to his crib and I'm ok with CIO with checks or modifying it dependent on LO, but I'm really concerned with disrupting LO#1's sleep. Once he's asleep he sleeps through everything but I can't handle two non sleeping children.

Did you CIO with two children? What did you use to help?

@Orchid: That's why we did it, too. Little one was waking every 45 minutes all night long and was miserable. It did help us feel like we were making the right decision. Good luck! I promise you'll be happier when you come out the other side!

@Jess1483: thank you! You're right. At this point, I want to do it more for LO than for me, so I hope that helps make me resolute in the midst of it.
