I called the OB earlier this week because I caught the cold and needed suggestions for a decongestion and she said this year's flu shot missed some strands of known flu viruses and that's why so many more people are contracting the flu this year. But because I'm pregnant, I knew it was recommended. I just heard how bad this flu season is on the news last night and I'm so glad we both decided to get the shot! For the pats 2-3 weeks, I have had no fewer than 4 flu-positive or rule-out-flu patients on my floor at the hospital every day (meaning one might be discharged but we immediately get a new one). And one of the other social workers says it's the same on her floor. I had to ask my OB, they did not mention it, and although he said I could get it and a lot of Drs recommend it, he said he personally would not if he was the pregnant one. He doesn't believe there has been enough research on the "safe" flu shot to determine if it really is safe. He did inform us of all the risks of having the flu while pregnant and left it up to us. My OB strongly recommended it and I didn't have a reason not to get it. I hate needles but they were already drawing blood so they just lumped it together. I almost got sick in the parking lot but that was from them taking blood.
