@swurlygurl: No I'm not. I haven't looked at it yet, but I kind of assumed we would start when he's a bit older (he's barely 3). Right now we do kind of casual math conversations...

@Mrs Green Grass: Have you been using this with D? When you first posted this I downloaded it, and I've been talking though them with L each night. She can kind of get the 'Wee Ones' by herself, and then I talk through the 'Little Kids' with her. I thought she wouldn't be into it, but she's taken to them surprisingly well! I think the focus of laying in bed by ourselves with the lights off helps her focus.

So anyway, thanks for the link!!

@TemperanceBrennan: I'm with you here! Can you imagine someone saying "I barely know how to read," but they do that with math all the time!

I think this is so great. One line really stuck out to me - and it's something I rant about every time I get the chance:

"Culturally and socially, it seems we don't think about math as integral a part of parenting as reading. And few adults would say, "I'm not so good at reading." But many people say, "I'm not so good at math." And somehow that's socially acceptable."

Especially with the "new math" techniques that parents rail against all the time (which I think are great!) hopefully parents will start to value math as important skill that they can foster in their children!

Downloading! After talking with LO's preschool teacher to discuss his progress, she suggested bringing math into our conversations. We've been doing it ever since summer, and I've seen a big difference already. It's usually simple things. How many plates are on the table? How many will there be if we add a plate for daddy and mommy?

I love this idea, though neither DH nor I have ever believed we were "bad" at math. I would be really interested in the books for bedtime, but I think trying to incorporate basic math all day (like counting cookies at snack time) is important.

This article talks about using an app called "Bedtime Math" and how it can improve math performance especially in children of parents who are anxious about math.

I've never really thought about "talking about math" the way I've thought about reading so this was a great reminder!

Important to note: they specifically discuss how apps with lots of "bells and whistles" are often not as effective because they distract kids. Also that very few apps are actually based on research. So do your research!
