He is still so young. I wouldn't worry!

I don't know exactly when she started saying words but I remember the doctor asking at her 15 month appointment, too, and I said she knew about a dozen words.

I dread her apts for that reason. At her 9 month apt they asked if she could clap, cruise, etc. and she couldn't do any of those things. I felt like everything was so wrong! But now she's a year old and she never stops clapping and is cruising all over the place, she just had to get there at her own pace.

another thing i've seen is sometimes physically advanced kids tend to be less advanced when it comes to talking. i think charlie was a little behind with his gross motor skills. for instance he's still not very good at riding his scooter or balance bike, but i've seen kids that are 6 months younger than him ride better. and his friend (who is speech delayed) is much more physically advanced than he is. she has always been able to outrun him.

LO started saying her first words (umma and appa) before she turned 1. She had a word explosion between 13-14 months. By 15 months she could point out and say about 30 words.

I read and heard that boys start talking later than girls though.
Also, do you speak 2 or more languages at home?

we have a lot of friends with late talkers. 3 started talking after 18 months (maybe closer to 20 months?), another started talking closer to 3. they were 3 boys, 1 girl. only the one with the very late talker pursued early intervention, and now he talks up a storm.

i think often it does end up that the child is a late talker, but the benefits of early intervention if there is a problem can't be denied which is why they're so aggressive with it.

charlie talked a little bit faster than average, and at 15 months he was able to say 7 words, months 16-19, he added around 10 new words each month. then month 20 he was able to say 100 words. it will just happen like that where they have a vocabulary explosion overnight.

i wouldn't worry too much yet, especially because he can sign and understand what you're saying.

Our pedi had the same questions and statements for us at my son's 15 month appointment. Our 18 month appointment is coming up in 2 weeks and we do have more "words" but not much that is really intelligible. We have "yah" "wawa [water]" ock [sock]" and "dada". He understands what we are saying and sits, lays down, and goes to his bed when asked. He points to his eyes and mouth when asked. He is totally on track cognitively, he just isn't ready for saying words yet. If we have to go have an evaluation for speech therapy so be it. I'm not worried because he'll get there in his own time, with help or without. Try not to stress too much.

I just went to a 15 month old appt with the LO. The ped said by now, he should be saying 3-5 words. Uhhh...nope, not yet. He's a boy so I expected him to be a little slower but he's not saying anything that resembles real words yet. The ped said that by the 18 month appt, he should be saying 8-12 words. If not, we may need to look into speech therapy!

My son babbles a ton but refuses to say anything I ask him to or point out. He's also a big time thumb sucker so perhaps he just rather prefers to suck his thumb? I'm a little worried but will be more worried if he doesn't say one word by 18 months! (He seems to understand things I ask him or point out so understanding doesn't seem to be the problem. He also can sign "more")

Any other moms out there with late talkers? When did they start talking?
