So glad he went!!!

FWIW, my first baby was not EBF, and her formula made her constipated at times. We were told diluted prune juice was ok (esp after 6 months). I never used it for less than 8 days of no pooping, but when I did, it worked!

@Mrs. Microscope: I notice LO has bowel movements regularly when I continue to have a lot of fruits and green veggies/salads. Not sure if you can or if you do incorporate that into your diet? See if that helps! Glad he pooped though!

Update: he pooped during his nap, just before cut off time. Not a blow out, but a full diaper. Thinking he is having issues due to texture/scent, so I will be sure to ask the doc about that.

Thanks for the support!

I'm a longtime reader but had to respond to this post. I have been dealing with a similar thing with my son (also almost 5 months, EBF) and worried about it quite a bit. For us, this has been ongoing for a few months. My pediatrician recommended prune juice (2 oz) or pear juice once a day. He also recommended using an infant suppository, which made my son go within 10 minutes when my son was really straining or uncomfortable (which he was around the 7-8 day mark). I didn't find massage or stimulation to be very effective but I'm going to watch the above video!

We have not fully resolved this issue yet, but it looks like for us, it is related to making sure he is getting enough BM (he has been sick with a cold multiple times and slow to gain weight). Good luck!

When my Lo2 was 5-6 months, he went like two and half weeks without pooping. He was also EBF. I also did all the massages, rectal stimulation, etc. but nothing.

My pediatrician said to take prune juice, dilute it, and give tiny drops into his mouth. He never took a bottle either so water was out of option too. I don’t know if it helped or if it was just time, but he eventually went. I also tried to eat more fiber in my diet.

I’m curious why your pediatrician said don’t give LO anything. I mean I rather try couple of drops of prune juice than an enema.

This is totally tongue in cheek, but dress him in his best outfit, wear a nice shirt yourself, and go out and get coffee and leave the diaper bag at home! Good luck. I bet he has a blow out in the waiting room. Also if I were you I’d totally give him some prune purée. But do what your peds says :)

My 5 month old ebf DS hasn't pooped in 13 days. I called his pediatrician yesterday, and they were concerned. They gave me 24 hours and some techniques to try, and NOTHING. We have a couple hours left before time is up and I have to take him in for an enema and blockage exam.

Again, he is ebf, and has been eating well, and having a normal amount of wet diapers, and is in good spirits. We have tried vibration massage in the "moon pattern" , massage baths, rectal stimulation, tons of tummy time, tummy time across my leg (pressure on low abdomen), leg bicycles, giving water by bottle (totally rejected!)

The pediatrician told us NOT to give juice, purees, or other food (just breastmilk) and no meds.

Any other tips or tricks to try? Thanks!

Not to rain on your parade, but I've had constipation my entire pregnancy, both pregnancies. Colace when i remember, plus metamucil/psyillium husk.
I also try to eat prunes or dried apricots. I'm my own worst enemy; I forget a lot of this. Between this and heartburn, its the worst parts of pregnancy for me.

I have this problem the instant I get pregnant and it lasts the entire time. My OB recommended miralax. One I got unconstipated I took fiber gummies and colace every night. I would increase how much I took if I hadn’t gone that day.

Warm prince juice, a cup of coffee, and then a gentle walk. My doctor allows Senna tea during pregnancy.
Once you get through this bout, consider continuing a small dose of stool softener or milk of magnesia daily. Add in a daily fiber supplement (start small!). Once you clear constipation you want to continue helping your body for awhile or else you willl immediately get backed up again.

I’d do something from below - dulcolax suppository. Warm prune juice is a good natural laxative. But you need something strong - the prune juice can be maintenance.

I agree with pp, you need something strong right now to get things moving again, not sure what as I have never had it quite that bad while pregnant or otherwise, but I do have ibs and when I didn’t go for a week once I went for a stomach xray and took a mild laxative and was okay after that.

I take a probiotic daily, eat prunes, and while pregnant I eat prunes regularly and also take psyllium husk mixed in with water or juice daily and chug it in the morning usually.

Hope you are rid of the poop soon! 😁

I take Miralax almost daily, and often 2-3 doses per day. This is okayed by my GI dr and OB. I have used fleets enemas before as well very occasionally (also okayed). I'm 14 wks with #2 and if I don't do this I won't go for weeks and end up in the ER. When I'm really bad, eating more fiber makes it worse- just adds more concrete, basically.

For me, also avoiding some difficult to digest foods is helpful- look into FODMAPs.

Definitely time to break out the big guns, take anything you can! I've never had it that bad fortunately but I take digestive health pretty seriously. I'm a fan of psyllium husk powder during pregnancy, I put a few scoops of it on my cereal every morning and slowly ramp up throughout pregnancy as needed. That's for regular maintenance though, right now you need an actual laxative.

Dried prunes or prune juice and lots of water. That helps clear me out when I get constipated. Then make sure to get plenty of fiber. I like to make granola with flax seed and eat it a couple times a week. That helps keep things moving.

I'm sorry, that is so so so painful. You need a real laxative, not just a stool softener! Ask your doctor specifically. Mine was good with milk of magnesia, and I've heard others get the OK for Miralax occasionally. Once you get this sorted, talk to your doc about prevention. Mine has me on Colace daily, and I also eat both a Fiber One bar and an apple almost every day. Make sure you're drinking enough water, too. Hope it clears up fast!
