My guy has always been in the 95th+ percentiles all his life, and we switched him to a convertible around 5.5 months. He was technically still in the weight and height range for the bucket, but the real pro of the bucket was being able to take it on and out quickly but he was really too heavy for it to be a benefit anymore. He was way happier in the convertible....way more room to stretch!

DS hated the infant seat and we planned at road trip at about 5 months, we figured there was no harm in giving the convertible seat a try and it definitely helped a lot.

@Mrs.KMM: We did exactly this when my DD was 5 months. She was about the same size as your LO at six months too. We switched because she hated the bucket so much, she loved being able to sit "up", see out the window and I think ultimatly the infant bucket bothered her reflux.

We did a 7 hour trip each way to visit some family and she did way better than expected.

@Mamasig: I guess I'm just concerned that I'm being silly since, although she is big for her age, DD is still well within the height and weight limitations for our infant bucket. So there is not an actual NEED to switch her yet.

My son was much happier once we switched him to the convertible. I don't see any downside (other than the convenience of the bucket being removable from the car without waking the baby).

My son definitely is happier in the convertible vs the bucket. I would never have considered a road trip in the bucket but I would in the convertible.
And some people have their newborn in a convertible! Many are safe from 5lbs. So as far as safety you're good :-)

We are considering switching DD to a convertible car seat. I am curious to see what others think about switching her at this point.

What is prompting the idea is largely our big trip back home to Indiana for Christmas. Based on previous trips with her up there, we will have a 12 hour drive each way. So I wonder if DD (who definitely prefers being more upright as opposed to leaning back) will be happier and more comfortable in a convertible car seat instead of the infant bucket.

As further background, we went to her six month appointment today and she weighs 20 lbs. 8 oz. (97.5%) and is also in the 95th percentile for height. So she is a big girl!

Do you think it is reasonable to switch to a convertible car seat at this point? Do you think it will make her any more comfortable for our long drive?

Awesome, thanks for all the replies. Bumping for any new replies today. Do people really find Clek seats to be worth the price? I'm a big bargain hunter when it comes to most baby gear, though this is one of those cases where we will be using it for years hopefully.

I'd check out Car Seats for the Littles or the Car Seat Lady. You should take into consideration your vehicle and your child's stats before determining which seat is best for you.

Our DS is on the taller side and I wanted him to RF as long as possible, so we went with the Graco Size4Me, which has one of the tallest RF maximums, yet is also fairly slim. We got it on sale + Graco rebate for less than $100. He's 16 months old now and has been in it since 8 months (when he outgrew his infant seat), with no end in sight!

Can you try them in your car? We have a Clek Foonf that we love. I tried that and the NextFit in my sedan and found the Foonf took up way less space front to back because it sat high enough that the head rest was under the way it was angled, if that makes sense. The nextfit and my seat both angled back at just the same/wrong height. I liked too that it was narrow in width so we wouldn't have to change our cars just on account of more kids or car seats down the road.

@sapphire: The Diono Rainer is supposed to be an absolutely fabulous seat for rear facing and forward facing but be aware that the booster feature is not a great fit for a lot of kids.

Something else to consider is that some of the convertibles can also be used as boosters later.

The Car Seat Detective blog was really helpful to me. We plan to go with the Diono Rainier because of its great height/weight limits for extended rear facing and its ability to be a booster later. Caveat that we don't actually own it yet though.

@ElbieKay: Yikes that is kind of alarming about the Coccoro RF limit, I didn't realize that would be a possibility at just 18 months. DD is only 40th percentile for weight so that probably wouldn't be an issue for her, but I think we'd still like the option of keeping her RF past age 2 if we can. Good to know.
