We bought a harness to booster seat for DD; she was 3 at the time. The one we bought used the LATCH system when in 5-point mode so it was just like a car seat. When we switch to booster mode, we'll basically just hide the harness beneath the padding and use the regular seat belt instead of LATCH.

@locavore_mama: definitely a little on the bulky side just because of the added height.. But in all it's not too bad. Britax is really good about a reasonable footprint. If you get one with side impact, it is a little wider though..

@locavore_mama: It has the same footprint of the Boulevard, but it's more upright and can not be reclined.

It's also worth noting it is not approved for airline use.

I agree with others it doesn't really make sense to do a convertible, but definitely something with a 5 point harness for a while.

I have my son in a Britax Frontier in my mother's car. That is a harness to booster seat that allows him to sit in a 5 point harness up until he is 90 pounds.

I had to replace a convertible seat and decided this would be the longest lasting option.

@Cchoi4: we just got a harness to booster seat super on sale for when DD moves to a convertible. I was planning on getting a convertible but made a last minute change in decision. The box of the harness to booster said that the weight range is 20-100 pounds so I am not too worried about transitioning DS to it whenever we decide to. I actually think we might use it as a back up seat in DH's car until we would switch everyone around.

We switched our son from convertible to harness to booster seat when we switched our daughter out of the infant seat as well. She was about 1 so he was about 3. I was about to get another convertible for my daughter but decided to check my son's measurements against the convertible. We have the boulevard too and because their height limit is lower than some other convertible seats, he was already at the highest setting. So I knee he wouldn't last long in it and we had already switched him foward facing by then anyway. So it was a good thing I double checked.

@Cchoi4: as long as there's a full back and 5 pt harness it should be fine. From what I understand and have read, 5 pt harness seats are best until age 5.

@locavore_mama: hi! Yes that is the predicament we are in now, trying to decide whether a booster (with full back and harness) is a better investment than just buying a 2nd convertible. Sounds like it may be. Thanks for your input!

What's a harness to booster?

I plan to keep both in a convertible for quite a while.

ETA do you mean booster seats with backs and full harness that you can later convert to a booster? If so I am thinking of doing that too when #2 outgrows the infant seat. I think we moved #1 out of the infant car seat when she was about 6 months. So if #2 follows suit I will feel. Comfortable putting her in one at 32 M for sure.

I have a britax frontier 85 and frontier 85 sict (grandparent car) and just ordered a frontier 90. I love that my DD (age 5 and just reached 40 lb) can stay in a harness for longer... It worked well because I passed her combination car seats (boulevard, marathon) down to her little brother when she was 4 (I believe she was around 35-36 lb) at the time.

I think our radians fall into this category? They are rf or ff with 5 pt harness, and convert to a highback booster to use with a seatbelt. Our kids are younger than your oldest so we haven't used as boosters yet, but have been using our radian 120s rf-ing for almost a year and really like them. It's a newborn to 120 lb seat. We bought them after kids grew out of their bucket seats.

DS1 is almost 3 years old and about 30 lbs. We currently have him in a Britax Boulevard convertible carseat. His younger brother, now 6 months, will be growing out of his infant car seat very soon. So we are left with the choice of:

1) buying another convertible car seat
2) buying a harness to booster seat (so we can move DS1 to this and move DS2 into his old convertible)

I've been trying to find information about harness to booster seats but the only hard and fast rule I've found relates to just booster seats (where they have to be 4 years old and at least 40 lbs). I take it though that this rule is for the booster seats (without 5 pt harnesses).

So anyone with a harness to booster? If so, when you did buy one (how old/big was your child)?
