My ex in laws told me today that they are driving in from out of state for a doctor visit next week and will be popping by to visit. I suggested they stay home. They laughed it off. If their doctor doesn't cancel their non-essential appointment in the next few days I'm going to have to ask my ex to lay down the law or do it myself. Stay home omg! They are pushing 70 and not well.

There’s no testing available unless you are sick enough to be admitted. Don’t base your decision on publicized cases. Also it’s a 14 day incubation period. Everyone over 60 should be locked down, completely isolated, not going out at all.

@Becky: That's the hard part. There are only two confirmed cases in my state, but one of them went to the gym in my neighborhood, so I'm sure it's around. We're not in an area where testing has been available. We'd stay mostly in the house, so I'm less concerned about them picking it up from random people while they're here, but I also don't want one of us to unknowingly pass it to them.

My parents live only 10 mins away and I told them not to come over for a while, since they are mid 70s. We arent sick but could be passing the virus to them unknowingly.. It's just not worth it right now!

I didn’t respond because I think it depends on where you live. If you’re far from any cases, I wouldn’t be too concerned.

My main concern and drive to really commit to socially distancing (besides for the general good) is to keep this away from my parents. They’re in their mid-sixties so not too old, but my dad is on an immunosuppressant. They are our childcare twice a week so I don’t know what we will do if i have to go back to work before this feels safe again. Right now my school is closed for the next two weeks. So anyway, I don’t think you are crazy one bit.

This graph illustrates how many young people might be infected and spreading it unknowingly. (S. Korea cases with widespread testing v Italy testing those with symptoms).

@bhbee: You’re definitely not crazy, if any of us were sick it would be a hard no for me, too. I feel like our parents are having a hard time accepting that they’re in the vulnerable demographic. It’s just not worth the risk when there’s FaceTime and all the other options for staying in touch remotely.

@Pollywog: They would be driving and staying with us, but my dad always takes the country roads and stops at what feels like every general store along the way. And they’re totally going to get a lecture on social distancing even before they come. But they’re stubborn, so I doubt it’ll do any good. My dad refused to evacuate during a hurricane once when we were on vacation because he paid good money for the rental house. 🤦🏻‍♀️

My parents are showing up tomorrow to be our childcare providers for the next three weeks. They’re in their 70s. I’m not worried about it - I think they’re actually way more likely to observe social distancing here with the kids than they would be at home, they have a pretty active social life.

But they only live 3.5 hours away, they’re driving, and staying at the home of a friend who’s away for the winter, so if they haven’t already been exposed they won’t due to this visit.

My in-laws are visiting tomorrow. They visit 2-3 times a year. My mom has been trying to visit too.i am allowing the visits, but I also am giving unsolicited lectures on social distancing and reminding them how serious the virus is.

My view is that of they're driving and staying with you, it's far from ideal, but okay. If they fly or stay in a hotel, I veto. I also refuse to do any activities or go to a restaurant, so visits are a whole lot of toddler/preschooler in a very small townhouse

No. I didn't vote because I don't think either no option fits. It's a no for me because they're more at risk. I haven't decided if we'll say no to all visitors over the next month.

I have turned down my parents offer to help (they live 8 hours away) because they're part of the more vulnerable population due to age. They're offended but they'll just have to get over it. I think they're more offended by being classified as vulnerable in general and this is just a reminder.

I have asked my parents and ILs to be available for video chats and reading stories to the kids while they're stuck at home. Hopefully that will help us and them.

@karenbme: I have a follow on “gut check” to yours. My mom was scheduled to visit us this week for spring break. My brother lives 45m away and she was going to visit there too. I called her yesterday before her flight and said I wasn’t comfortable with her coming to our house, since the younger two have been sick with cough/low fever and I got diagnosed with viral bronchitis for cough, sore throat, low fever, aches, chest tightness, etc. I’m not getting worse but even on prednisone I’m about the same, my breathing is not normal. So she flew in and went to my brother’s house.

She still really wants to come sometime this week but that seems crazy to me. There’s no testing here and I can’t guarantee we won’t expose her on the chance I have it (maybe kids too). There’s at least one confirmed case in my local area. Besides the fact that she’s 70 and higher risk, then there’s the fact that whatever we give her may go back to my brother’s depending on schedule and definitely goes back on the plane with her.

I’m not crazy for thinking this right???

Hi, we were talking with my parents this morning and they mentioned wanting to visit from 3 hours away either next weekend or the weekend after. To me it sounds crazy because of all the Coronavirus measures that are in place right now. They’re both in their 60s, so more at risk of serious illness than the general population. I may be being overly cautious, but it just seems like a bad idea. If I were them I would just want to hunker down. Even as me, I just want to hunker down. There is less virus here than where they are, so I’m also a little concerned that they might bring it with them. And I know kids tend to be ok, but I worry so much about DD who is 4 months old. Idk, am I being crazy?
