I would use something to protect the mattress. Even if its a cotton protector or a small mat/square that you lay the baby on.

I have a woollen underlay on my cot mattress and rather than use a mattress protector, I use a "dry-cot" blanket on top of the underlay. My LO is almost eight months and the only messes I've had in the cot or bassinette are spills and baby vomit.

If you can find some sort of mattress protector made of natural fibres like cotton or wool it shouldn't compromise the breathability of your mattress.

My only other suggestion would be to have three sheets so you can have one on the bed, one in the wash and one spare.

Just getting our crib and cot bedding organised - am I missing anything or is there anything on these lists you wouldn't bother with?

Crib (first few months):
- new mattress
- fitted crib sheets x2
- baby sleepsacks
- lightweight/breathable blankets
Do I also need waterproof sheets/liner to protect the mattress?

Cot:
- new mattress (with waterproof and breathable cover)
- fitted cot sheets x2
- breathable bumpers
- continue to use sleepsacks/breathable blankets as above.
Again, do I need an extra waterproof sheet as well?

I'm a bit confused by whether adding any kind of mattress protector will impede the 'breathability' of the mattress; so any thoughts would be welcome!
