Thanks for the sympathy, ladies. I felt like a horrible person because I was reacting to my son as if he was coughing on purpose to annoy me. I could tell myself he wasn't but then after a coughing fit I'd still lose my cool. UGH! Thankfully he's on the mend so the rage is subsiding - until the next cold.

So it's not a cough...but my 7 year old has chronic allergy issues and she's ALWAYS sniffling. The first year of the pandemic when she was basically home nonstop, I didn't think much of it since I knew she hadn't picked anything up (and even if she had, it at least wouldn't have changed our school/childcare situation since I was homeschooling). But once she went back to school and I had to think through if it's her "normal" stuffiness or a "getting sick" stuffiness, it became more of a thing. And we spent more money in covid tests than I even want to think about to be sure we could send her in to school and to be ready for the phone call from school when someone thought she was extra sniffly and needed to come home. We finally found an allergy med regimen that seems to be working, so I'm not second guessing it quite as much - fingers crossed it keeps working.

100%. So many feelings like what does this mean for child care, are you going down? Do you have a fever? Was that a fluke cough? Who have we seen recently? When should we test again? do you have a tickle, drink some water! Then my toddler thinks it’s funny to fake cough because he’s learned how and the 7 year old encourages it and I just want to lose it.

Yes! But I've been like that since DS was a baby (and he's 9 now!). He had bad reflux and some feeding issues, so a bad cough meant choking and/or puking. He would also have a really hard time sleeping with a cough, so I got used to being on alert and not getting enough sleep if he had a cough. Now when my 2 year old coughs, I get so anxious, even though she sleeps through way more coughing than I even could and has no reflux issues.

I definitely get triggered by it, but it’s less rage than anxiety/panic. My daughter nearly died at birth because her lungs weren’t strong enough and then a few months later Covid broke out, so probably some PTSD there. I do get ragey when other people cough near my kid though. 😅

She’s vaccinated now (FINALLY) so I’m more confident that Covid wouldn’t kill her, but after two years of constant vigilance and that anxiety is just so ingrained now.

YES, all coughs make me feel rage-y. I felt this way before covid though, so it's not really the anxiety part, just the micro-rage. (Although we've spent so much of the past 6 months being ill in one form or another any coughs or runny noses definitely make me feel dread).

I've explained this to my husband before and he thinks I am crazy, but I believe it's called misophonia? Like when people get angry at the sound of other people chewing? It makes me feel really guilty because I know no one is coughing on purpose and my response is completely irrational but it drives me up a wall.

My 7 year old has a bad cough right now and it is going to send me into a nervous breakdown. Every single cough just sets me on edge. We’ve tested twice and it’s not Covid. He can continue camp so it’s not like early days where a cough meant no child care for 2 weeks. But I think I’ve got some post-Covid trauma in the form of a tiny anxiety-rage whenever my kids cough. Just wondering if anyone else feels this way.

In response to your initial post, my DH came off his meds in early 2013 and he is sick all the time too. I asked him if he thinks its because of the medication - he doesn't. He thinks its since having E because she brings allsorts back from daycare.

Have you ever had sinus problems? Or been tested for allergies?

A few years ago I had pretty much constant head colds with a bout of bronchitis thrown in every month or two. It ended up all being caused by allergies and poor sinuses. I started getting allergy treatments and eventually had sinus surgery and my life is completely different.

I feel like i'm sick all the time. Currently I have a wicked cough that's been keeping me up all night and OTC cough medicine isnt doing a thing. Just since the beginning of February I've have 4 separate incidents of colds that I get maybe a week where i feel ok then I get sick again. I'm heading to see my Dr today and i'm just afraid she's going to tell me i have a virus and there's nothing i can do. I dont know anyone who gets sick as often as I do or have it linger as long as i do. I'm wondering if my immune system is permanently damaged when i was on Immune Suppressants a few years ago but i've been off them since 2012. Any ideas of talking points i can bring up to my dr?

@kiddosc: Thanks, I will look into it, but honestly, for such a short medicated period, I'm not sure it's worth the investment for the nebulizer plus a new prescription.

@.twist.: It doesn't need to be on his face. Since it blows air, it really just needs to be near him enough so that he inhales it. Our old Dr's office used to have them to rent, but our new one does not so we purchased one this last time. I don't know if it will end up being covered by insurance, but if not the machine was $70. Not nothing, but not crazy expensive either.

Oh, and the medication would need to be in a different form. What you have won't work with a nebulizer.

@.twist.: No, a nebulizer is a machine that aerosolizes the medication so that it can be breathed in through a mask. We also found the pacifier attachment very helpful when E was very little. They suck on the paci and the medicine blows up by their nose so they can inhale it.

@Madison43: Sometimes for smaller kids they use a spacer chamber, basically an eclosed space with valve flaps, so that the child has a little bit of time and doesn't have to be as precise breathing it all in at once at the right moment.

Have you tried assembling it out of sight, or maybe assembling it fully, but with the actual medicine canister removed for safety, and then letting him get comfortable with it that way? You can also rent a nebulizer if you think he would use that more easily.

We have an inhaler with a spacer, which is like a plastic tube with a valve on one end that you squirt the inhaler into, and the vapour sits in the tube waiting to be sucked out. Sounds like that's what you might have!
I have had the best luck switching to a spacer with a mouthpiece rather than a mask. My LO would completely lose his shit any time I put the mask on his face, but with the mouthpiece I think he feels more in control. I usually just sit next to him for a few mins loudly sucking on the mouthpiece (with no meds in), then offer him a turn - he is usually very happy to have a go. He's only 11 months though and very into copying at the minute - not sure how old your LO is!

I was going to suggest a nebulizer as well. I've used one on a cat, and our method was to hold the back of her neck while she takes her ten breaths. Obviously, that will not work well with a baby, but it's bigger and it should be easier.

UGH, sorry. One of us had to hold LO 2 down while the other administered the puffs. It was very unpleasant with lots of tears from me and LO 2!

So, L has had a bad cough for a while now. Each time I take him to the doctor they say it sounds fine and it's nothing to worry about. This last time they gave us a puffer to use to help him sleep. We're supposed to use it in the AM & PM. So we try when he wakes up and again before bed.

We let him play with it. We put it over our mouths to show him it wasn't scary, and he played with it, putting it on his mouth and taking it off and giggling. Then, when we put the puffer into the chamber, he freaks out, cries, and holds his breath. Which is 100% counter productive.

How do I get my kid to use this thing??
