I'm in Australia and most places are now recommending skipping rice cereal altogether as it provides next to no nutritional value and is a major cause of constipation. Here we start with veg and fruit purees, heavier on the veg but with a bit of fruit mixed in to sweeten it. We also don't really follow the one food for three days rule. In her first week of having solids (at 5.5 months old), LO had more than 12 different fruits and veggies. I can't remember all of them but I know it included butternut squash, pears, peas, broccoli, pumpkin, apples, blueberries, mango, sweet potato, carrots, and a couple of other things. When we went to the States for a visit, it seemed as though everybody was pushing rice cereal on us and could not understand why I refused. Even at 11 months old now, LO has still never had rice cereal - she has whole grain cereal with fruit in the mornings as I just don't see the point of giving her starchy white carbs.

i'm chinese and my mom is always trying to get LO to eat rice porridge! she said i grew up on it.... it's only a tinnnnyyy amt of rice cooked into porridge (crazy how little rice you need to make a giant vat of porridge) and then she cooks all kinds of vegetables and meats/fish into it. ex. tiny cut up/pureed spinach, mashed sweet potato with salmon all mushed up porridge.. she made that for LO when we were visiting a while back. it's pretty yummy and nutritious!

Good question although my response is not that interesting. Here in Mexico we were told rice cereal and veggie purees and that seems standard from what I've heard. I'm really curious how the indigenous folks do it though. Anyway, hope others reply with more exotic and interesting answers than mine!

Moms/Dads from other cultures and countries: what solids are traditionally first introduced to babies in your cultures and countries? Since in the U.S. it seems like doctors recommend rice cereal and purees, I'm wondering what it's like in other places.
