@rachiecakes: assuming you've tried straw cups? Most babies seem to have an easier time with those.

@Mrs. Yoyo: he also hates drinking from cups and doesn't hold a bottle, ugh! he was an early talker/walker but is really slow to transition with taking fluids. it's frustrating. I keep buying new types of cups for him to try. I'm going to keep up with that and hopefully find one he likes and will drink from! :) thanks for your suggestions

I honestly just started giving it to him, and little by little, he started drinking it. Find a cup they like -- that's key. He only drank a few sips at first, then an ounce or two ... within a week he was drinking maybe half the cup. Now he can kill one pretty quickly.

He was breasfted but kind of weaning himself, so he was probably thirsty and didn't give me much trouble about it! I imagine it would be harder if it's more of a mom-led thing.

Subscribing as well!

My LO has started to refuse formula and formula mixed with breastmilk. I also don't have a huge pumping output. I won't know what to do if I return to work in the next month!

ETA: I have given him some soy milk and almond milk mixed into smoothies...which he tolerates. He also eats yogurt which I've heard is a good substitute if your LO doesn't like liquids.

We started by putting cow's milk mixed with formula (we'd run out of our breastmilk stash and I hadn't been able to keep up my supply) and slowly increased the cow's milk to formula ratio over a few weeks. We mainly did it for the morning bottle when we knew our son would be frantic (that was his most insistent time) so he'd pay less attention to the taste change. Once we got it to all cow's milk we slowly stopped heating it up and eventually went to straight out of the fridge temperatures. During the day we let daycare just give him cow's milk and he drank it or didn't but they also offered him water so he could have his pick. If trying something like doesn't work, maybe try soy or rice milk (maybe almond milk with your pedi's okay since it is a nut). They tend to be sweeter than cow's milk and sometimes with breastfed babies they refuse non-sweet milk since breastmilk is naturally sweet.

Subscribing! We will be starting next week! I heard someone say you shouldn't replace breastmilk or formula ounce for ounce and make the transition gradual...not sure if that is a good plan?

I would love to hear more from experienced moms!

J is a big boy! :-)

DS was on breastmilk with one formula bottle until almost 11 months, by then my stash was depleted and we were doing mostly formula. He hasn't really had an interest at all in bottles since he started eating solids. The kid loves to eat.
Our pediatrician said we could start him on cow's milk. He just turned one on Monday.
We tried last night and he wasn't really into it. Didn't surprise me because he doesn't love to drink liquids but I don't want him going without for too long.

How did you transition from breastmilk and/or formula??
