LO has eczema and in the winter it gets REALLY bad so we put about 10 drops of baby oil in her bath water (as per doctor's recommendation). When she comes out of the bath, her skin has oil on it and we rub it in before putting her pjs on. No stains as far as I could tell. We also use the baby powder every now and then.

The nurses at the hospital told us not to use powder because it is not good if the baby inhales it. But I used baby oil on my LO's scalp every day for over a year since it used to be very dry. I never seemed to stain anything.

We haven't used the powder, but we use baby oil on her skin b/c it's pretty dry. Mostly I just use the oil on her feet and hands, but sometimes on her body too. I haven't noticed any staining. I think we let it soak in pretty well before we re-dress her.

Mine didn't have cradle cap, but did have extremely dry and bumpy skin from time to time. We resorted to hydrocortisone a couple of times I think, but in between used Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Cream (oatmeal), and it smoothed out the less severe rough patches like a charm -- usually overnight. Hope your little one's skin clears up soon! :(

One thing I read which was true for my son, is that those are often related to a dairy allergy. He had horrible craddle cap. We did try the olive oil on the craddle cap. We put the olive oil on and let it sit and then we washed it with baby shampoo. Then we used the brush and comb and roughly washed it off. He had some flakey skin like that between his eyes above his nose as well. We put baby oil on it and just used a washcloth to get it off.

I highly recommend going off of dairy for 2 weeks and see if there is an improvement. We ultimately went off dairy and soy and he has a bowel movement every day instead of once every 2 weeks.

I can't speak to cradle cap and baby acne (sorry, sounds so sad!) I read somewhere that olive oil helped someone's cradle cap.

RJ has the opposite issue from constipation but he did have a few times when he didn't poop for days, which was really concerning since he regularly pooped between EVERY feeding. We'd take his temp rectally (or just stick the thermometer in there! with vaseline of course) and sometimes that did the trick of loosening things up! But he was the same-- he'd pass gas all the time but no poop. It happens a lot, even with babies as regular as RJ, so don't worry unless the pedi tells you to!

@clementine: Oh so sorry! I just saw that you replied to my post. I started using the hydrocortisone at around that age, 1 month. And the pediatrician said it was totally fine. Just be sure to not apply it more than 3 times a day/3 days in a row. Actually we just applied some last night on my LO (2 years old now) because he was eczema and had some rashes on the back of his knees. This morning, looked like it almost cleared up! That stuff works really well for us.

Have you decided to try it out yet? How's his acne and cradle cap doing?

@clementine: Totally sounds like my LO when he was the same age. My heart broke for him because he looked soooo uncomfortable.

For cradle cap, we used medela cradle cap shampoo and it helped a lot but didn't get rid of it completely. It eventually just resolved on its own.

The baby acne was really tough because he was so itchy. I just lubed it ALL the time. And when it was bad, I used 1% hydrocortisone cream for 3 days in a row. I think you can only use it for 3 days in a row and then stop for a week (might want to double check with the ped). But the hydrocortisne helped SO much (definitely made the biggest impact for us). I think we went 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off and in between, we just lubed him up with aquaphor. The baby acne took a while to go away for us. The cradle resolved much quicker than the acne.

Ugh. I hate when babies get constipation. I think LO went 7 days once without one poop. And when he finally did, it came out black because the ped said it was just really old. :( We did the pinky in the hole thing and that worked really well. :)

I still use their cradle cap shampoo from time to time when I notice it coming back and he's turning 2 in 2 weeks.

Thanks, Rubies. He's breastfed but we also supplement at least 2 feedings with formula. It must be the formula. I also think the constipation or gas may be from what I'm eating since I've been feeling gassy. I'm trying to eliminate things from my diet to try to figure it out.

Is baby breastfed? I heard that if a baby is exclusively breastfed (even bottle fed?), it's impossible to be constipated (not that I wouldn't believe you...)...Poor little guy! In terms of lubrication, I used the ones you already mentioned... :( For a month-old baby, not going poop for 4 days sounds stressful! I hope he give you a giant blow-out soon!

My poor LO (1 month) has a horrible case of baby acne plus cradle crap all over his face, scalp, neck, etc. He's red, scaly, and dry all over. I called my Ped and he said it's prob a combination of all those dermatitis combined into one. He said not to be too alarmed but to keep him well lubricated. We've tried the following products: Cetaphil moisturizer, Kiehl's baby, Vaseline, baby oil.

He looks so uncomfortable and so pitful. There's not a spot on his face that isn't red, bumpy, and raw looking.

Any product recommendations that you swear by and how long did your LO have this?

Also he hasn't had a bowel movement for 4 days, my Ped said if he doesn't have one by tomorrow to give him a call. He's been passing gas like crazy, but no poop. Any advice for constipation?

Sigh :(

I used Aquaphor for my son's cradle cap, but I recommend trying other remedies first. I didn't like the greasy feeling/look of it, and I felt like it took a long time for it to go away. Of course I also put Aquaphor on his face and body too. He was a very shiny looking baby. :)
