I agree. Our cl and fb groups are the same way. I'd rather spend a lil but more on new than buying obvi used stuff that is overpriced

Hmm yeah I find that it depends on your area. When I lived in a big college town, Craigslist was a goldmine for cheap things that students/grad students wanted to get rid of because they were moving - lots of them bought brand new furniture and only used it for a few months to a year before selling! But where I live now, I find that the consignment/resale groups on facebook are much better than CL.

I don't think that pricing is unreasonable for expensive things though. Reminds me of the Tula B/S/T groups on facebook where the carriers sell for maybe $5-$10 off retail, if that. I gladly bought a new one, assuming that I will be able to sell it when I am done for close to retail. You could buy one of the $350 strollers and then resell it for $300 or so when you are finished and it would probably still be a fine price for it and that means you would only have paid $50. Not obnoxious, I think that is a great way to go about buying and selling baby things since they are only used for a short time.

Personally, I will only buy the low-priced things resale, but usually that is how the pricing works for the "luxury" items.

I don't find it obnoxious or greedy. You don't have to buy it or you can try and negotiate. People always price high because they know people will negotiate a lower price.

Ditto to the people that price for negotiating.

DH and I wanted to sell an old couch. We paid 400 for it and kind of wanted 100 for it because it was about 8 years old by then (still in really really good shape but we have no more room for it). So we listed it for 200 and we were talked down to 120 I believe.

People always try to talk you down on CL so might as well listed for more and see where you get talked down to.

@PurplePumps: Yep, this is how I do it. In my head I have a lowest price I'm willing to accept, but will list it for 5-10% more than that expecting people will negotiate down. What has been most surprising to me is that people don't even bother negotiating! I'm not trying to be greedy, but there are certain things that I'm also not willing to give away for bargain-bin prices, especially if it is still in excellent condition.

ETA: That being said, I'm also not listing a thing I paid $300 for at $275 or anything--I do always try to make sure it is a significant discount from the price if you were buying brand-new.

I think people price things expecting a lower offer. It's just a mental game imo. If it was $300 new, and you *want* $150, but you list it for 150, guaranteed people will come by and offer 125. But if you list for 200, someone would likely offer 150. I definitely do that when making offers on used items.. always put the limit and offering a bit less.

I hate when people try to sell their used shit for almost new prices. Sorry. I'd rather pay slightly more and buy new.

I think things are worth what people will pay for them. If you can find a used item for 50% of the new price, that's great. But if the going rate is 20% off retail then why should they price lower? If you want the pay less, why not buy the item new, keep it in good condition, and then sell it for 20% off when you're done with it?

What cracks me up though is when people post their Ethan Allen furniture from 1985 - 'I paid $8,500 for this brand new! Selling for only $4,000!'. Uuummm... it's almost 40 years old, and definitely not in style - good luck with that!

Yeah, it really depends on supply and demand. When I bought our used play kitchen set there it was $35 (originally $175) b/c there were SO many on there. I ended up negotiating it for $30 and she took off another $5 b/c the faucet was loose. With some disassembling, putting some gorilla glue and screwing it back on (it actually wasn't broken), and reassembling it was good as new! When we were selling the cook top stove that came with our house there wasn't much on there and I just randomly priced it at $550 (originally probably close to $1k?) and some guy came and said, "okay, I'll take it." He handed me the cash and left. He said he just needed a stove that looked like it was in great condition to replace his old one to sell his house. I priced it for negotiation and he didn't even bother. Lucked out, really.

@SerenaSF: I see this a lot on Craigslist and on B/S/T groups on FB as well. I've seen people post clothes on FB that are *more* expensive than the same item new, because now the item is on sale.

And they'll be like, 'Only worn for pictures", as if somehow that makes me want it more than the new one I can buy directly from the store?

I mean...I obviously just don't respond, but I do wonder if they realize that the reason they aren't getting any bites is because it's overpriced. When something is priced well, people will buy it. And when it's overpriced, the owners will just keep "bumping" the listing over and over. Like, hello...if people aren't clamoring to get something, it's over priced.

I'm usually willing to pay half price, if the item is in good condition, so if I really want something, I'll email the price I'm willing to pay. Sometimes they say no, they are waiting for a higher price. *shrug*

I've been checking Craigslist sporadically for the past few weeks looking to see if there were any good deals for some of the strollers I've been looking at, and I think the way most people price their items completely ridiculous!

I find that most people price their used strollers at about 30% off (or less) what they paid new. For example, a used two year old Bumbleride Indie is listed at $350 right now. A brand new Bumbleride Indie can be purchased for $500. There's a used City Mini GT listed for $300. This sells NEW for $350, so that's not even 15% off. There's a 2 year old BABYBJORN Travel Crib listed for $200, which can be purchased new on amazon for $250.

I understand that people want to recoup their money when selling an expensive item, but this is my gripe with it:

They expect me to pay MORE for something used than they paid to have it brand new.

If I were to purchase that used bumbleride for $350, the owner would have then got back more than half of the cost, and the cost for that person to have a brand new, in perfect condition stroller would have been $150.

I completely understand higher pricing for items that are in almost new condition and have hardly been used, but that's not the case with most of the listings I see. These are worn-in used items, that have the wear and tear that comes with using an item for a couple years - scratches, scuffs, stains, etc. I've sold a lot of stuff on craigslist, and I always price it at least 50% of what I paid for it new. I find it rude that someone expects me to pay more for a used item than they paid for it new!

Anyone else find this obnoxious and greedy?

I used to a lot (mostly stuff I made myself). I'll go through phases of eBaying, but last time I sold a lot of stuff for cheap thinking there were no listing fees. A few weeks later I was hit with such a big total quarter invoice for all the "other" fees. Ah! I ended up LOSING money on some stuff. So now I will be more selective and careful about my pricing and whether it's worth selling.

I do. I used to sell a lot more, and do pretty well at it (for "hobby" money, not "real" money, if you know what I mean) - I need to get back to it!

ebay can be really hit or miss; stuff I thought for sure would be hot go for meh prices and then random things people are all over. All it takes it one or two who really want the same thing, I guess! :)

I used to rarely sell on ebay because it was easier to post things on Craigslist and not worry about shipping. And the last time I posted on Ebay there were all these little fees (yeaaaars ago) they charged every time you listed.

I recently wanted to sell a BM dress that was in excellent condition, and with clothes I thought Ebay would definitely be better than Craigslist (I usually just donate clothes to Goodwill) so I went with it. It sold so fast! I was really happy for getting a 70% return on my dress. I would've been happy with 50%!

So that one experience gave me the desire to try to sell more.. First up were Noelle's Halloween costumes from the last two years. One is a common Carter's costume that I bought for $9.99 at Costco, and it was bid up to DOUBLE it's price. $20!

I'm so surprised. I can't wait to dig up more things around the house to sell that's just been sitting and collecting dust. I asked my friend who loves buying and selling on Ebay for tips and she told me she's even sold her used cheap blouses, dresses, and blazers from Forever21 and H&M for a decent return.
