I live in Columbus Ohio. Like any city, there are better and worse parts. And like most cities I'm aware of, the good and bad parts are pretty interspersed and sometimes close together. In my actual neighborhood I feel pretty safe. We walk to and from friends' houses a few blocks away with no worry. There isn't going to be a drive by or random violence in our neighborhood. My general area says 305, it's still a big area and includes some of the largest housing projects in the city. I feel really safe. There are always other people around, the deli on the corner and lots of doorman buildings. Property crime is way, way higher, 28% per 1,000.</p> <p>I echo what @Sapphiresun: mentioned in her post: most violent crime is not stranger related. I work for a prosecutor's office and I can think of less than 10 random violent crimes in the past 9 years I've worked there (and to clarify, we live in an outlying suburb of Atlanta, not the city). If I stay within a several block range I feel safe doing things like walking the dog alone after dark. We park on the street and have never had anyone attempt to break into our cars. I can find total events and divide by the rough population though, and it lands us around 1469/100,000, in a major urban city.</p> <p>However, I'm not sure that stats like that tell the full story. I would say I still feel safe in my city. A lot of the violent crime isn't stranger based. I live in an urban area. I do feel safe where we live, but because it's a city, I am always cautious. We technically live in a major city metro, so the stats are for the city as a whole, but we live in the suburban-like area of the city which is as far out from downtown as you can be and still be part of the major city. Our particular area feels very safe for me.
