@FaithFertility: It actually went well! We crushed up the pill and put it in a small cup of Hershey's chocolate milkshake, which he couldn't resist. And the medicine worked, thank goodness! He slept 12 hours without any coughing! He's still stick today but I think the worst is over. How is your LO feeling?

@QueensBee: DD is getting over croup from last week, it seemed to be out of no where, she was acting irritable then bam the seal cough! She was given meds but the last few days the cough seems to be back :(
Last night she woke with 101 fever and was miserable!
She also has a bad diaper rash from meds!
My heart break for her, I just want her healthy again!
Pedi gave us a prescription Friday of amoxicillin if we thought the cough and her sinuses were getting worse.
He said croup sounds gone her lounges sound clear just the lingering cough and cold!
I really don't want to give her it, but now I am thinking other wise!

Sounds like classic croup. My LO has had it both ways - the random 11 pm wake up and totally fine the next day, and the nasty stick around/turns into a big snotty cold situation. I would just monitor it!

@Maysprout: @Chillybear: Thank you for sharing your experiences. I decided to send him to school for a few hours. It seems like he'd be coughing more and feeling way worse if he really had it.

We just went through croup a few weeks ago... Sunday fine all day put her to bed she woke up around 1:30AM with the barking cough and the strider (the weezing when they intake air) we ended up at the ER from about 2am-4:30am they gave her an oral steroid and breathing treatment. and we followed up the next day with our ped. Both the ER ped and our ped said she had a pretty text book case. its often times gets worse before it gets better but the steroid would help get over that hump. she wasnt contagious and that was our only incident.

I had my first experience this fall, terrible. It didn't last long but it was scary to hear, sitting her up helped and then taking her outside made it go away. It was a cool but not cold night so I took her outside and had her sleep laying up
on my chest for an hour. The cold air helps. Then I had her sleep propped up. She acted pretty normal the next day but the next night she started coughing again but thankfully it wasn't the barking deal cough but I did prop her up for a few nights.

@Anagram: Thanks for describing your experience. It sounds scary and miserable! I'm so sorry your LO had such a terrible week, but happy she seems to have turned a corner. I always assumed croup would be more like what you described i.e. starts with cold-like symptoms that escalate. I'm really hoping DH was wrong about LO's weird sounding cough and that he just has a regular/mild cough...

We are just coming out of an awful week of croup for our older daughter (2.5). Her croup seemed like sort of a cold at first, then quickly turned into a really bad cough, which morphed into croup within about 12-24 hours. It was scary, and the sickest she has ever been (and she's been sick a lot). More than the sound of the cough was the frequency for us--we were doing everything: steam showers, humidifier, warm water with lemon, and nothing was helping at all. Her couch was constant and incessant--literally constant. Not even a 1 minute break between coughing fits. We went to the doctor the first time and they thought it was just bronchitis and they gave us saline breathing treatments and Bromfed dm. That did nothing. 48 scary hours of misery and constant coughing later, we went back and finally they diagnosed croup and got her on an oral steroid. About 12 hours after the first dose of that, she finally turned a corner and now 3 days later she has a regular, very wet and gross sounding cough but it isn't constant.

We had a weird thing happen last night. LO (almost 3yo) had a great day yesterday- he was happy and energetic and running around and showed no signs of illness. He went to bed at 8pm easily. Around 11pm, he woke up crying. DH went to tend to him and put him back to sleep. He woke up again at midnight and DH did the same. DH came to me and said, "He has a cough that's waking him up. It sounds really weird.." I asked, "Does it sound like a seal barking?" and he said, "Yeah kind of like that!" So I immediately thought... croup. :bummed:

DH slept with him all night and LO slept soundly for the rest of the night. No more coughing or wake ups. LO woke up at 7am today in a great mood, very energetic. I asked him if he was sick and he declared, "No, I'm not sick!" I did hear a teeny tiny bit of a wheeze when he inhaled a few times but he didn't cough once from 7am-9am. He definitely doesn't have a fever or runny nose or anything.

I'm trying to decide whether or not I should send him to school. If DH didn't mention the weird cough last night, I wouldn't even think the kid is sick at all. I hate to have him miss his Valentine's Day party and handing out the cards he made, but I also don't want to get everyone sick.

I guess i'm looking to hear other people's experiences with croup. Would I definitely know if he has it? Or can it be extremely mild, like 2 coughs and then nothing for 12 hours?
