@meadow: yes, until about 7 months LO was very sensitive. He can now tolerate if I eat a tiny amount (something cooked with pam). Giving up gum was so hard!

I just finished 3 weeks of GF and DF. For me it was a lot of pre-planning and checking labels. I was surprised by how much I had overlooked at the stores before that was dairy free. I cut out coffee and when I reintroduced it, I did so with soy. My breakfasts were a GF bagel and dairy-free Daiya brand cream cheese. Lunches were leftover dinners and dinners consisted of a lot of roasted veggies and meats for the time being.

My baby could tolerate the soy lecithin, and so my go to snack was kind bars in dark chocolate chunk.

Otherwise all meals were from scratch! I substituted unsweetened almond milk for dairy in recipes, the red label earth balance for butter, and just learned to live cheese free! I also made all our bread at home. The only thing I couldn't find a good substitute for was soy sauce! Some of the vegan cheese products were tolerable in small quantities. Good luck!

@Pollywog: The ped. asked me to eliminate soy too. Bummer - most of the dairy free items I bought last week also have soy (including my fake oreos :( ) Whomp Whomp. Do you eliminate soy letchin - I've read some people can still tolerate that.

I've been dairy free for 6 months (we also have allergies to soy (very common). Gluten, eggs, and peanuts). He's pretty sensitive, but I can do natural flavors.

We eat a lot of avocados, grilled meat, rice, and veggies.

Also, Starbucks and Dunkin now have almond milk! Almond lattes are yummy

OU-D food (kosher dairy) is going to be extremely strict. Sometimes, food that isn't dairy but is made in a factory with dairy will have it because of the possibility for cross-contamination.

It all depends on how bad you think the reaction is and how strict you want to be. I was super strict at the beginning, but then let up a little over time and realized it wasn't impacting DS. (We would still have issues if I ate cheese or something obvious, but casein, flavorings, etc...weren't enough to cause issues). The kellymom cheat sheet @kiddosc linked to was super helpful at the start.

I re-made a lot of my freezer meals dairy-free, so I don't have a ton of ideas for you, sorry. I also ate a lot of chili, and tacos during that time... But as a bonus: Girl Scout thin mints and oreos are dairy free!

Oh and food labeling has gotten a lot better. I don't have to scan labels like I used to. I wouldn't worry about "natural flavoring", it shouldn't be enough to be a problem. (Others may know more about that). Things to avoid are milk, milk-fat, casein, and whey. A lot of baked goods have milk in them, but bagel usually don't have milk in them.

I have been cooking dairy free for a few years now. Most thing are pretty easy to just leave out the dairy. I can give you our menu for this week. Roasted chicken, rice, salad. Quiche (made with water instead of milk), quinoa, salad. Chicken soup. Lentils and rice. Pasta with tomato sauce., green beans. Pumpkin soup ( made with coconut milk instead of cream). My other go-to is anything Mexican because it's easy to leave out the cheese.

I'm allergic to milk (and it's been really bad after this last pregnancy, I can't cheat anymore)! You can make almost anything dairy-free, the only hard things are dishes that rely on the cheese (mac'n'cheese) etc.
A lot of Tex-Mex dishes are good without cheese (taco salad, burritos)
Soups (I'm making this chili this week: https://thefigtreeblog.com/2012/11/slow-cooker-butternut-squash-coconut-chili.html)
Here's another easy one: http://whoneedsacape.com/2013/09/slow-cooker-fiesta-chicken-soup/
A lot of Asian dishes don't have dairy
Salads are easy to do without dairy (I made something like this for lunches this week: http://inpursuitofmore.com/2016/02/29/winter-veggie-slaw-with-citrus-tahini-dressing/

Let me know if you want more ideas. I've been dairy free since I was 10!

I've decided to go dairy free for a couple weeks to see if it has an impact on my DS (I EBF) who has had a variety of symptoms that maybe suggest food allergy.

I figure there are others on the board who have done the same......anyone have yummy but easy/quick recipe ideas? (Almost everything left in my freezer stash has cheese  )

Also I've seen the circled U label with a D next to it on food that I can't find dairy in the ingredients? After go ogling I think "natural flavors" might be the culprit.....do I avoid that stuff too?

Thanks

We're vegan, and I can always find non-dairy (vegan) cake mixes at the store. I think there are some mainstream ones ... Simply use non-dairy milk, and a flax egg (if there's an egg allergy too).

The policy at my LO's school is to only provide store bought treats where the ingredients can be checked. As a mom of a child who has food allergies (dairy, egg, and peanuts), I honestly don't trust another parent baking a treat. There are issues with contamination, and there are a lot of ingredients out there that people don't think to check (ex. chocolate chips).

The teacher will tell me in advance when there is a birthday celebration, and I bring in a cupcake for LO so that he doesn't feel left out.

Here are a few options if you want to bring a store bought treat: small cups of sorbet/water ice, enjoy life cookies (free of top 8 food allergies), Annie's bunny cookies, oreos (double check ingredients b/c it often changes), barnum's animal crackers, vienna finger cookies, gummy snacks, and jello.

I also don't like the idea of a second treat of fruit. Fruit isn't quite the same as a cupcake, and I learned my lesson when I brought in fruit for a holiday party. My LO skipped the fruit and only wanted special treats, most of which he couldn't eat. :bummed:

Keep in mind that it is difficult for children with food allergies. They often feel left out of birthday/holiday celebrations.

At that age, I would just find a different treat. We did the Yogurt squeeze tubes frozen. Which I realize doesn't help with your dairy issue.

Our daycare doesn't allow homemade goods either. I'd probably go down the path of fruit.

@charlotte: I'm not sure which classmate has the allergy and if its the one I'm thinking of she's new to her class. All the teacher mentioned was sending in the cake mix box so they can check it.

My son has allergies including wheat and the policy at his school is for me to bring him a special treat that I am comfortable with on the day that the birthday boy or girl brings their special snack for everyone else. The teacher told me this when we discussed allergies at the beginning of the year and I think it's great. I like to be in control of his food right now anyway (he's 2) and wouldn't expect a non allergy parent to bend over backwards changing everything. Will the school let you do something like that or at least have the teacher ask thge parent if they'd rather bring their own that they made? I could see people taking it the wrong way like "you should include everyone!" But like I said, I like it this way!
