But you can open the bottom portion of the window, no? It looks that way from your photo, we've had those kinds of windows too, but we had those crazy metal shades mounted on the outside of the building.

I'd give up that functionality to have the roller shades inside mounted.

I think the cellular shades that you can raise and lower from the bottom are your best bet then. My MIL has the exact same windows in her apartment and she has those mounted in the bathroom. The windows function as normal.

@lamariniere: oh that stinks! I saw that lever but assumed it opened out!

I would do short - end at the window sill above the radiator

@lamariniere: gotcha. I'd probably just go short. At least it's less enticing for kiddos to pull on!

Plus, I feel like kid rooms are one of the few acceptable places to have short curtains.

@hotchildinthecity: @looch: @Mamaof2: @Anagram: problem is that that top pane is a functioning window that swings open. We wouldn't be able to open it if something was mounted. Otherwise I would just do roller shades.

You can do a roller shade with an inside mount - that's what I would do and then add a valance for some color - I wouldn't want to block the radiator!

I prefer the look of long curtains, but I think with a radiator it can be possibly dangerous for the curtain to be covering it (accidentally). So I think you have to go short. Otherwise, when you close the curtain at night to block the light, it will cover the radiator, right?

I've also seen some hotel rooms with double drapes. One shorter blackout curtain that you can close to block out light and still heat the room, with longer curtains that you never close on the outside. This picture is pretty hideous decor, but you get the idea of the curtains.

Knowing what is available to you, I'd do a cellular shade that raises from either the top or bottom.

I don't see why a roller shade isn't an option, unless you don't want to have to patch the wall?

We just moved to a new apartment and need to get curtains for the children's rooms. I hate curtains, but the sun is currently up before 5:00 am and setting very late so we need to block the light. Roller shades aren't possible in these windows. So my question, what length of curtains would you put in, knowing that each window has a radiator under it. Short? Long to the floor? A better idea? This is a rental so we don't want to go wild and crazy.

Yep, the IKEA Kvartal panels are perfect for this. If you visit ikeafans.com, there are lots of posts from people who have made their own panels, tips and tricks for using the system etc.

@blackbird - It's actually bigger than the other bedroom, I think (that's a listing photo). The windows make it tough though since there really isn't a good wall to put a bed. Plus next to the radiator on the right is one of the room's closets. With the cover in place, you can't open the bedroom closet the whole way. So it'd be perfect for offseason items but not really daily use. At least, not with the radiator cover there. So we figured we'd make this room a guest/office until we get pregnant and then adjust it for a nursery space.

@mrsjazz - Ooh, the panels would be perfect! I think I found my solution. MIL is an awesome quilter, sewer, etc. so I think I'll have her sew some panels and a curtain so it all matches. I attached a picture of the room - I think putting a track to the right of the window (where the crib is now), going to the left of the other wise (by radiator cover) might work. Would have to make sure the ceiling fan doesn't get in the way. I'm thinking two panels and then a third curtain on the left of the window by the crib. So when the panels are pulled back, they just look like curtains. Great idea!!

You can bolt the tracks into the floor and ceiling. Just like closets! I have sliding door closets, so I don't see any reason why you couldn't do that in the middle of the room!

@blackbird: @LindsayInNYC: We were looking into this when were thinking of moving to a one-bedroom with LO, there's this company (in NYC) that does sliding door installation: http://www.slidingdoorco.com/

Also, Apartment Therapy has a lot of room dividing entries. A lot of people use the Ikea Expedit bookshelves for room division. Though I'm not sure how you would secure them to the wall vertically (we have the Expedit anchored to our wall, but it's flush against the wall).

Some that I bookmarked that might give you some ideas:

We are going to have a second bedroom that we'd like to use as a guest room/office and eventual nursery. I think the guest room/office part would really just have a futon and a desk. Maybe a small bookcase, at most. I thought about using one of those Ikea cube things (the 5 x 5 style) to divide the room but we'd have to secure it somehow (I think?) once a LO is mobile.

Any other suggestions on ways to divide the space? I'd like to be able to work and be sectioned off from a crib so LO can't see me.
