We usually choose to walk to pick up takeout (sushi, Mexican, burgers, Chinese) but for places that are a bit farther we do order delivery without hesitation (Indian, Thai). We are pretty reckless with money, unfortunately. So maybe don't follow our guide... They often will add a little more to each menu price item and then they will tack on a delivery fee. Not sure if yours does the same or if the ones I used just took advantage of college students, but I couldn't believe the difference once I actually started paying attention! Plus, you're right, the wait times are RIDICULOUS and they are often right on. They say 90 minutes? See you at the end of this movie. I would rather just phone in the order and have DH or myself go pick it up. We don't get ANY delivery, not even pizza. That being said, a short drive (4-6mins) out, and all of a sudden we've got a zillion places to choose from (take out/ pick up). So, DH usually picks stuff up on the way home (but I cook maybe 5 days a week). It was a sad, sad, SAD 12 weeks after LO was born. The weather was insanely dangerous and snowy so I couldn't leave with a newborn, and DH didn't get out of work til 6-7pm. I starved my way back to my PP weight and lost my supply while I was at it. Literally, NO delivery. Before we moved here, there was a great independent delivery service similar to the one you described. It was like $3 for the delivery fee and they also suggested that you tip the driver like normal – I usually tipped him a couple bucks extra. They would get you food from all sorts of really good places: good pizza (not crap chains), Chinese, sushi, Thai, Vietnamese, BBQ/soul food, Italian, noodle house, soup house, etc. They picked up from more than 30 restaurants; and then of course there were additional restaurants that offered their own in-house delivery service. I don’t mind paying for delivery; the convenience just wins sometimes. When we get delivery, it's pizza or Chinese. But we have a ton of take out places within a couple blocks, so usually DH goes out to pick it up. We are planning to move to the 'burbs soon and DH keeps joking that I need to up my ethnic foods cooking game because we won't have so many take out options once we move. Very sad. We very rarely pay for delivery because not a lot of great options! Most delivery places are (crap) Chinese and pizza/sub places or larger restaurants that do pizza/subs/italian, etc. Usually DH goes to grab takeout.
