I didn't notice huge skin changes, but I had the same experience with my hair! I had THE. BEST. HAIR. when I was pregnant! And now it's thinner and stringier. Super lame.

@sarac: I finally got in for a haircut last week. Chopped it. It had been since last April, so I was quickly approaching the year mark and these post-partum months have really done a number on it. Thanks for commiserating in the skin blahs. It does help to know that maybe this is tied to breastfeeding/hormones and maybe things will change.

@alphagam84: Thank you for sharing your experience. Yes to the cystic acne along the jawline. It can be SO painful! And it's the worst spot with all of the baby snuggling I do these days. Sounds like you're attacking it all from the inside and outside. What a pain though, right?

@CakeLady: I've been through two rounds of accutane in my lifetime. Is the medicine that you're on similar to that? I'm not looking to get pregnant again, but I still think I'm another month or two from being done with breastfeeding. I hope the meds do the trick for you again.

@Littlebit7: I just don't know if I want to hop back on the pill. I feel like it was never the main reason for my clear skin and I don't miss taking it. I agree with you on the clarisonic and dullness. I've never tried Retin-A...maybe I'll keep that in my memory bank for when I do get in to a dermatologist. I long for something to take care of these pesky breakouts.

@Boogs: I also have some spots that have appeared from my pregnancies...but sometimes I think they are also tied to my age :(

@Pumpkin Pie: Thanks for sharing that you also had some skin problems when you weaned. I'm sorry you dealt with it too. When I had this problem after my first pregnancy I hopped on proactiv for a while and it worked. But then when I got pregnant, I stopped. I think I might consider that as a first step before I go back to the dermatologist.

My skin started breaking out in my 3rd trimester and after DD was born it got even worse. I had terrible cystic acne all along my jaw line. It was so painful I went to the dermatologist and they did cortisone shots in the really bad pimples. They also put me on antibiotics, a benzoyl peroxide cream, and a retin A micro cream. It's finally starting to work. I'm not breastfeeding and am also on BC.

Breastfeeding is just hell on my hair and skin. Dry, itchy, red, blah skin. Pimples. Just, yuck. My hair gets both greasy and kind of dull, and breaks terribly. I'm fighting the urge to just cut it all off again like I did the first time, but I know it will eventually pass, so I'm trying not to.

I had not-great skin during pregnancy, esp the last half. It cleared initially after giving birth, then it was HORRIBLE for 3-4 months post partum. It only normalized once I started taking birth control again.
I also purchased a clairsonic when sephora had a sale. That has actually helped with the dullness.
I also started to use a retin A micro cream every other day. I had gotten an Rx before getting pregnant from my derm but had to hold off until I stopped breastfeeding. The initial effects were dry and itchy/red skin, but i dropped the frequency of use. It makes my skin appear smoother and no pesky breakouts.

I loved pregnancy skin too. I had terrible skin before pregnancy - cystic acne caused by hormones - and it came back when my son was about 18 months old. I just saw the dermatologist last week and I'm back on spironolactone (an oral medication), which is the only thing that has ever really made a difference. It's not safe for pregnancy or nursing though.

I had great skin during pregnancy, then maybe around when I weaned, my skin started getting horrible. I had breakouts, discoloration, black/white heads, dryness. I haven't done anything and just put up with it because we're TTC, so figure I'll handles it after all that is over.

I've spent a good portion of the last three years being pregnant two separate times. And my favorite part about pregnancy? My complexion. It's actually one of the first symptoms that I noticed and was so thankful for. The majority of my life I have dealt with a terrible complexion. I wish I could bottle up whatever "hormonal balance" is in play in my body during pregnancy and slather it all over my face for the rest of my life.

I'm in the process of weaning off breastfeeding. I anticipate going for another month. But I'm wondering, is that what's making my skin a wreck? The hormones from all of that? Is it just everything that's been dormant in my body for three years coming to the surface?

I know I probably need to consider getting into a dermatologist. But it feels pointless when I'm still breastfeeding.

Anyone else have terrible skin (primarily on your face) after pregnancy? What did you do to clear up your skin?

At the derm today I got the all clear to start! she'll be calling me later this week when she has my lab work in hand but i get labs every three months and i've never had anything but good results. My mom came with me to the appt since she works in the city and while she didnt come into the office with me she asked about the appointment and my meds and i told her our plans! Doc thinks its also a good idea to take a month off the pill while still using back up. looks like i'll be POAS in Oct!

@Ali: Thanks so much! I certainly understand what your husband is going through. It took almost 2 years and trying different cocktails of meds to find a combo that worked for me and see results. It helped to have a really great doctor and nursing staff and insurance that covered a variety of treatments. I had really good luck with Humira and Methotrexate. Since i've been off the MXT for the last 4 months i've found that i have some patches but theyre mostly contained and not nearly as bad as before i went on it.

We'll only be TTC until at the latest Feb at that point if my skin is a mess again we may have to take a break go back on meds and wait for warmer weather when my skins is happier.

Hmm, I'm on my first month off BCP and we're going for it straight away - but I do wish I'd come off BCP sooner.... it's so frustrating not knowing what's going on with my cycle!! If I were you, I'd come off the BCP now and use another method of contraception for the last month - while you're still taking your humira - then, after the wedding, go for it!! :-)

I totally feel you on the medication front because my husband has psoriasis (barely controlled by topical medication)mand has recently been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. He desperately needs some serious medication - a cocktail of a similar drug to humira and an immuno-suppressant, both of which can cause birth defects. We've decided to conceive before he starts the meds so we don't have to worry about "coming off it" for a few years - and it's agonising watching him suffer, knowing he could opt for the medication at any time and get his life back......

Anyway, just to say, huge congratulations on the beginning of your TTC journey. Lots and lots of baby dust to you!

I've heard a lot of stories of people who go off the pill and then IMMEDIATELY get pregnant (a couple of my friends got this lucky), and even my doctor said I should go off the pill and then try immediately with that first cycle. So I'd suggest starting a new pack for September and then going cold turkey and getting busy!

I would recommend finishing on Friday and giving yourself a month, while using another (reliable) method. The only reason I say this is my first couple of months off BC my body was nuts and I couldn't really rely on temping or checking cervical fluid as a marker for when I was ovulating. But if you're OK with maybe not getting pregnant right away in October, then you should be fine waiting until 9/27. Just keep in mind that your body's signals may be a little out of whack after going off the pill.

Anyway, congratulations!

So all the ducks are in a row... I came off my meds in April. Three months later i've been to the dentist and I've scheduled a crown after having a temporary in place for (i'm a little ashamed) the last 10 years. I did the preconception appt and i'm going tomorrow to get final clearance from my Dermatologist. Hubs and i turned 28 in August and our 2nd anniversary is tomorrow! Our puppy finally matured into a dog and construction on our addition is almost done. I even had a confidential conversation with our HR manager about how our med plan and short term disability works.

I'm so excited, nervous, scared, yet i feel oddly prepared to make this step forward.

Here's where I'm unsure.... i've been on the pill since i was 17 - never taking a break. I have no way of predicting what my body will do when i stop taking it. Our "plan" is to officially start TTC in Oct after my BF's wedding. however, my derm wants me to stop taking humira when i relieve the goalie. Once i stop taking the humira my skin can become very irritated.

I'm done with my current pack on Friday. Do i start one more pack starting on 9/6 and finish on the 27th and no looking back TTC? or do i finish off friday and use different "barriers" and let myself have a month to get back on track and still stay on the humira? I realize this probably also a question for my Dermatologist but i'd also like some anecdotal opinions.

Does anyone on the boards have any experience with Psoriasis and/or Immune suppressants that would mind sharing how TTC and pregnancy went?

I had severe psoriasis on my scalp, hands, and back about 4 1/2 years ago and my derm and I have been able to keep my skin almost 95% clear for about the last 3 years. In order to do this i take a humira shot every two weeks and 5mg of methotrexate weekly. Yesterday i had one of my quarterly appointments and I am green lighted to stop taking the methotrexate. I need to be off that for 3+ months before we TTC, so the plan is to stop BC and the Humira at the end of August. My next appointment is right around then.

I'm nervous, excited and anxious. I fear having a major flare up while off my meds and once (xfingerscrossedx) i do get pregnant the topical meds i relied on for flares i wont be able to use. There are equal parts chance that i will improve, worsen or stay the same with a pregnancy, so its kind of a crap shoot as this affects each person differently. I just hope whatever is in store for me is controllable.

Any other flakers like me out there?
