@Kemma: My plan is to stick to "healthier" eating as this was scary for me, but it is nice to know I can indulge without a huge fear. Honestly, my diet immediately before the one hour was terrible (I took the test xmas eve and had a wedding, a Christmas party, and a birthday party all the weekend before and work parties all week. Woof.)

@reverie: good stuff! But just as a cautionary tale, please don't be afraid to retest later in the game if you feel you need to, my midwife retests anybody with a borderline 28 week result as GD can often crop up later.

All the best for the rest of your pregnancy!

and to update my own post in case someone googles their way here... I PASSED. I'm in shock. My MD never calls with normal results so when the number popped up I thought it was over with. Anyway, I was on a work call, so I don't know my numbers, but she said I failed one of the 4 drawings but it was very close to cut off anyway and you have to fail two to fail. So yay. Happy New Year to me! Remind me how happy I am now when I'm 10 days post due again with an 8lb+ kiddo!

@Cherrybee: @ladybee: @Kemma: So interesting all the different approaches.

I had the test this morning and assume the results will be online Saturday / follow up with MD Monday if I didn't pass.

I almost felt *too* good. After the second hour I could have gone to the gym or something! I assume that means I probably failed based on nothing but my own negative outlook ;)

@tinyperson: That's amazing care! I got a half hour appointment with a nurse who showed me how to check my blood sugar and gave me a booklet produced by a drug company, telling me to switch to wholemeal bread and watch my sugar intake. I was then offered an optional half hour appointment with a dietician. She didnt give me any targets re carb levels, just told me to try and see how much i could cope with. Appointments are then every 4 weeks (I'm not sure if they would be more frequent if my numbers were bad).

@ladybee: @Kemma: That is loads of carbs! My numbers would be so high if i ate that! Even a tomato based sauce (curry, chilli etc) sends me spiralling.

@Kemma: Agreed. Like @tinyperson: I see an endocrinologist monthly along with a dietician. In the beginning, I saw them both every other week. I'm to turn in food logs and blood sugar logs but in a nut shell I'm supposed to eat 30g at breakfast, 30g for a mid morning snack, 45g for lunch, 30g for an afternoon snack, 45g for dinner and 30g for a bedtime snack. I test my sugar 4x a day (fasting, 2hr after breakfast, lunch, and dinner).

Not eating for me (due to lack of appetite or avoiding carbs) sent my numbers through the roof. So far my numbers have diet controlled following the plan given to me. I eat a lot of nuts, cheese, and drink v8 juice for my snacks.

@tinyperson: i think the issues crop up when women cut out all carbs in order to drop their numbers when it doesn't actually "fix" the problem of the pancreas not doing their job. As far as I understand it's healthier for a pregnant woman to be having the recommended carbs and taking insulin rather than eliminating carbs all together.

@Kemma: those are the recommendations I was given in terms of carbs but as numbers came up, the nutritionist told me to adjust as necessary...

@Cherrybee: I had to attend a GD seminar and learn all about what to eat and what not and then attend clinic once a week to meet with a nutritionist to go over every single number and food choice. Then, during that same visit I had to meet with an endocrinologist to discuss the next weeks plan. Finally I saw a high risk Doctor to go over my weekly ultrasound. Eventually all those visits were every two weeks. So I can say that in my case, I was very well managed and given good info - it is indeed those pesky hormones in my case! Good on you for controlling with diet (I also came to enjoy the leeway my insulin gave me!)

@Cherrybee: interesting! I couldn't find a lot of NZ-based info when I had my GD so I did a tonne of reading online. Most of the info I've read seems to agree that carb intake should be around 175g per day for optimal feotal development and growth. I think it equates to roughly 15g of carb for each snack and 30-45g per meal? I lost about 3kg once on the GD diet but still managed to grow an almost 10lb baby so obviously the sugar was still getting through...

@tinyperson: Pesky hormones! Yes, sometimes medication is the only way, I'm sure. Sometimes its the right choice, too - I've gone on metformin by choice this time to give me a little more leeway. But I still stand by my assertion that the low carb diet is very effective for most people, yet not explained fully by all doctors. My mum mismanaged her type 2 diabetes for almost 20 years and was on insulin three times a day before she was advised to try a low carb diet and now she's off insulin and is 6st lighter.

@Kemma: I have about 30-50g carbs per day, all from vegetables, a little fruit (8 raspberries a day!), some nuts and dairy. You'd need half that to get into ketosis. I sometimes have a little potato but I need metformin to allow me that luxury. I eat a lot of protein and a ton of veg, there's nothing unhealthy about that diet. Boring, yes! Unhealthy, no.

Diet controlled for both and both was under 6 lbs

@reverie: I failed both tests by a mile but I was able to control my GD with diet and exercise. Fortunately I'm in NZ and my OB was comfortable with me going to 41 weeks before inducing and she was also willing to let me go beyond that providing everything was looking good. I would absolutely push back against early induction unless there was a very good medical reason to be induced.

@Cherrybee: so do you eat any carbs while on your GD diet? I was under the impression that no carbs wasn't good because it could put the body into ketosis? Fortunately I could still eat small amount of whole grain bread, fruit and potatoes so I wasn't too restricted!

Yes, @MamaG: is completely right. I had GD and managed it like a boss. Baby was measuring right on track and they were pleased with us. However, at 37 weeks, baby's growth had slowed right down and they induced me at 38 weeks. It transpired my placenta had given up the ghost. E was 5lb 15oz at 39 weeks (induction took a week).

@reverie: If you do have GD and want to try diet control, message me and I will help you. My experience is the medical types give you really half-arsed advice because they think of it like a disease that can be cured with medication; they tell you that you can eat wholegrain bread and rice (umm, no!) then you're left wondering why your numbers are haywire. If you treat it like an intolerance and strictly eliminate sugars and most carbs from your diet, you wont need medication. Its hard to be so strict (I live off meat, veg and cheese - very limited fruit, no bread, no pasta, no rice, no potato) but it works. :goodluck:

@reverie: I was monitored by sonogram throughout. My girls never measured large. They were both born just under 8 lbs.

I think the risk isn't wholly in the size of the baby, but also in the health of the placenta. GD can cause the placenta to age prematurely, which can then impact the health of the baby.

I had GD (my # the 1st time was so bad that they never mae me re-test, but in hindsight I should have insisted, at least I had one more chance). Anyway, I was induced at 39 weeks. But the Dr that delivered me (not by OB) said he wouldn't have induced me at that time since the baby wasn't even big or anything. So next time I'm going to talk this over for sure (I didn't even know I had a choice).

@MamaG: were they measuring the baby via sonogram the whole time? was he measuring ahead? I'm sure it doesn't help my case that my son was large (8lbs 13 ounces) buuuut he was 10 days late.
