We have a stainless steel trashcan with a step to open latch and a Kissa's Pail Liner ( http://www.amazon.com/Kissaluvs-wpail-Kissas-Liner-White/dp/B0037NXP18 and ) and it works great.

We use a planet wise wet bag for daycare and if the diapers are too wet or sit in it more than a day it gets kind of damp and gross so I much prefer the trashcan and pail liner for at home.

@PawPrints: i dont find it annoying and there is a little hook on the inside of the lid so you can hang it on the edge of the can.... now that Fi is eating solids i do have a 2nd trashcan in her room for diaper liners and poop diaper contents (which we bag up in the little doggie waste bags from the $1 store)

@Chillybear: That Ikea can is kind of cute, I like the blue color. And the price is fantastic. But is it annoying having to use your hand to pick up the lid? I figured we would want a pail you can open with your foot.

We have two and here's why.

We have an Ubbi diaper pail and it worked GREAT for newborn diapers. But now that we are in full size BG diapers, you have to really shove them in there to get them in. it is NOT easy. I do *not* recommended this pail. It pisses me off. So what we do, since we use disposable wet wipes, is use the ubbi for the wipes and then have a metal step trash can with the Ubbi bag inside and that is where we put the diapers. It is sooooo sooo soo much easier. The diapers are just so big compared to the Ubbi's hole and the poor design pisses me off! Plus *if* there's poop on the diaper, you end up smearing poop all over the entrance hole! And then having to shove the diaper down into the hole to make room. GAH.

I thought about a hanging bag but didn't want to deal with a zipper with my hands full of diaper and stuff. The trash can with a step is nice.

@Torchwood: I think that's the one we have and we love it! We use it with a Fuzzibunz zip bottom wet bag and there is zero smell, and it's a nice size. For us it holds about two days of diapers. I try to do laundry about that often, anyway, just because I do a better job if it's a regular habit. Does it have a little bear-shaped filter on the lid? Also, we haven't changed the filter yet, and it's been almost 3 years (still no smell). Maybe we should...

I bought the Ubbi, which has a lock on it and would keep the dog out. I plan on using the Ubbi cloth pail liners with it once we switch to cloth (whenever he fits into them). Until then, I'll just use regular kitchen bags for the newborn disposables.

I didn't vote, since I haven't actually used it yet, but I based my purchase off recommendations that it contained the smell well, and locked securely. A couple of reviews stated that cloth diapers were hard to for through the hole, but I tried it with a number of AIOs and pocket diapers and didn't have a problem.

We did the regular trash can and there was one more added issue; when my son was in undies and we used the can for trash he threw his undies in there.

I'm eyeing the grovia hanging pail/ wet bag for the next one. It may be a compromise between both. Also the dogs have gotten to the wet bags and diapers but never ruined anything amazingly enough.

I'm loving all the cloth diaper posts today, so I'm adding another one. What's your favorite pail for cloth diapers? We were going to stick with a simple wet bag but I'm now considering a pail and liner, particularly since we have dogs that could tear into a wet bag. (I plan to train them off of messing with the baby's stuff but I know dirty diapers are going to be supremely tempting to doggie noses when we aren't looking. And those suckers are way too expensive to get shredded as dog treats.)

Unless he gets a rash, just a wipe. Sometimes no wipe b/c he's eager to get going already, especially when we do it standing up. If you're worried about rashes you can always put some Aquaphor before his night diaper, but I can't see that you'll need to do this until he's a bit older and sleeping through the night. Newborns get their diapers changed a lot the first couple of months. Also, there's some controversy with baby powder, I think? I bought it and never needed to use it. I might have used it to fix a creak on our hardwood floors a few times. ;)
