Well this is terrifying. DS is a little younger at 3 next week but his teacher made it clear he’s not ready for undies at school yet. Like others, he’s simply not interested. But he starts a new school in August where 100% potty (and poop!) training is required. Cue cold sweat. It’s certiably not the case that all kids are reliably pee and poop trained by 3.75 😳😭

@Calibee: Sorry you are dealing with it too! DD was the same about holding it for days when we first tried to deny diapers. Unfortunately she has dealt with chronic constipation her whole life which complicates how we want to deal with it. At her 3 year check up the doctor said to just give her the diaper and she would eventually come around, but I never thought we would still be dealing with it almost a year later.

@catgirl: My daughter is 3.5. Totally pee trained—in fact, she has never had a single accident. But will only poop in a diaper. If we don’t give her one, she will hold it for days. So...commiseration! It’s driving me nuts!

Not quite the same but my DD will be 4 next month and will only poop in a diaper. She has been pee trained for over a year and has never had an accident. She has always asked for a diaper to poop, which we rolled with for a long time. The only rule was she had to go in the bathroom while pooping.

We have been trying to not give her a diaper for poop but she still wears a pull up at nap and bedtime, so she just goes poop at the end of her nap every day. Bribing hasn't worked, the threat of losing privileges hasn't worked, basically she doesn't care. I was hoping starting pre school this year would help, but she has an extremely predictable poop schedule and never has to go there.

All that to say, good luck! I'm not sure what our next step is but you are not alone in these issues.

I bribed my 3yo with m&ms. If that hadnt worked then it was going to be prescheduled potty trips until he decided that just doing it himself would be faster.

If I were you I just would hide the diapers and/or buy like girly patterned ones and say the other ones were all gone.

Commando helped too during the transition.

Oh and also we bought underwear slightly too big because it was much easier to get on and off, and he only wears "soft" pants most days for the same reason. Basically we did/do anything that makes potty the easier option.

I have no advice as I am in the same boat with my 3.75 y/o DS. (* We are on our 5th round of potty-training in 1-1/2 years ... He gets to 90/95% trained then regresses. Most frustrating is that he LOVES his diapers. Ugh.)
So, I can only offer a bit of commiseration and tell you things will get easier once your DS decides to jump on the potty-training wagon. Many *hugs* your way as I know how frustrating this process is.

I would have trained DS earlier, but we had a baby and major life changes and it didn't work out. So we waited.

1 month ago we started potty training. He can now go pee and poop in the potty on demand. He does best when he's naked. We have to remind him if he's wearing anything. He won't do it on his own.

This morning he woke up dry and peed without complaint. Then when I tried to put his pull up on, he absolutely refused. Cried, wailed, gnashing of teeth and all that jazz. He wanted a diaper. Even went and got one for me from his sister's room (unfortunately they wear the same size).

We try every weekend to make progress with potty training, but he refuses to use the potty at daycare and hates pull ups, which daycare requires if he still has accidents.

Bribing works selectively, he isn't jealous of his sister wearing his underwear or pull ups, doesn't care about being a 'big boy' or 'like dad' and the ultimate toy bribe for when he is potty trained doesn't seem to be working.

What the french toast am I supposed to do now?

ETA: he's a month away from 4.

For me, I wasn't too bothered if they simply chose not to use cloth, even though I know the process is essentially unchanged for them; I'd clean the diapers, not them.

What bothered me was that it felt like it undermined my faith in the staff. My daughter's wellbeing is in their hands 4 days a week; I need to know that I can fully trust them to tell me the truth. For them to lie, just to avoid a conversation... it didn't sit right with me.

Luckily, the director came out to speak with me at drop off today. She had thought about what I said and contacted some people to discuss it. She said she actually likes cloth diapers and would like to allow them but thinks she was told the wrong thing by a licensing person at some point. So now she is researching the issue and trying to make sure she can appease whatever grumpy licensing inspector was responsible for this. So I feel a lot better.

@Iced Tea: I think how hard yo upush on this depends on your budget. We cloth diaper because adding diapers to our weekly budget make a big impact. I found that most people and daycare centers think that cloth diapers are a ton of work and are unsanitary. We use white Charlie Banana brand diapers (pockets, without rise snaps) so that they look and are put on very similarly to disposables. Each daycare we've been had the rule that the dirty diapers had to be taken home each day - not a problem at all. After demonstrating the diapers, there is no difference between the handling of the cloth and of the disposable, except our cloth gets put into a wet bag, and disposables go into the diaper pail.

Personally, this is a hill I would severly fight on because there are no regulations prohibiting you and it specifies in their handbook about using AIOs. Perhaps start with her classroom teacher - demonstrate how they work and if she is willing to use them, then tell the director.

NO PINS, NO RUBBER PANTS, NO SMELLY DIAPERS
just cute prints on big bums

It would not bother me if they just had a “no cloth diapers” rule—I can completely understand why a daycare would not want to deal with that. It would bother me that they’re trying to blame someone else rather than just saying, “this is our rule.” Because that’s fine, they can have any rules they want, I’d just like honesty about it. That said, if I was happy with the daycare otherwise, I prob wouldn’t push it.

Guess I’m in the minority here with @ElbieKay: but this is not something I’d make a fuss over. These people are caring for and nurturing your kid and however incremental the inconvenience is to them to use your preferred diapering/feeding method, they feel that it’s an annoyance that gets in the way of their work—if you’re just being a stickler about how they address it and you’d comply if they had Official Rules about it, then it’s one of yhose “do you want to be happy or do you want to be right” situations. I’d save my complaints for issues regarding actual care of the baby, like if they were propping up a bottle instead of holding her for feeds, or not changing diapers frequently enough.

It's annoying for sure that they can't crop to their own rule but I agree with @elbiekay. It is not something I would press further. At the end of the day, this daycare facility and providers are not comfortable with cloth diapers. If they are not comfortable with it, then they probably might not put it on correctly, or change it correctly, or clean it away correctly, or whatever it might be. And I would rather them put on the diapers the right way.

I had kind of a similar problem when I started my oldest - the daycare told me that they couldn’t do cloth diapers for health reasons, as per their centre’s guidelines, but I had previously toured another centre in the same chain who told me they could as long as I provided them a bin and a wet bag. I was annoyed but I really liked everything else about the centre so I let it go. I was using a diaper service, though, so it wasn’t like I’d made the investment in cloth diapers.

@Iced Tea: I find it strange that they didn't make their diapering rules clear before you started. None of the daycares my LOs have been in accept cloth diapers so when we used cloth diapers we still had disposables for daycare. I think this daycare just doesnt have the set up to cloth diaper and is giving you wrong information about it.

@Grace: She back tracked and said that she was worried about the bottles breaking if they were to fall. She didnt think it was safe. (Still not admitting it was "her" rule)

So - I brought one in and offered for her to throw it on the floor, knock it off something, whatever. She said "dont be ridiculous"...I was like "well, you have a valid concern, if you see that they will not break maybe youll be ok with it"...she said I was being ridiculous and that plastic bottles were just fine. Then she reminded me my first daughter used plastic bottles. (Not relevant)

She said their rule would be no glass bottles going forward, but still does not have it in the family handbook - which I snarkily remind her every time they send it out.

If this is something you're willing to be "that parent" about then show them what you're reading, but otherwise I'd just bite the bullet and do the disposable diapers for daycare.

I went through something similar with DD2 and glass bottles at Daycare. I read all the rules of the center - no mention of restrictions on bottle types. So I invest a ton of money in glass bottles. Day one I show up (thankfully it was only a 3 hour stay for DD) and they say they cant use those bottles - that is was a licensing issue.

So I reviewed the licensing. Nope. I talked to the director...she insisted it was a licensing issue...but kept coming back to "what if one breaks". I finally said "look, its your center - you make the rules...but we've been here for 2.5 years and I have read every version of the rules. If you dont want people using glass bottles you need to stipulate it"....she pointed again to the licensing at which point I told her to print me the applicable licensing guidelines that prohibits it - otherwise I'd be bringing glass bottles....unless she wants to tell me its her rule she is afraid to fess up to.

I dont know why they do this...just own it - its ok to make your own rules but dont hide behind licensing.

As others have said ... I made a fuss to prove a point because I was annoyed but ultimately was not prepared to yank my daughter over it.

I sent my one year old LO to her new daycare with cloth diapers. The handbook says only all-in-one cloth diapers are allowed. They sent them back home saying, "Sorry, cloth diapers are against DHS regulations". I knew this wasn't right since we used them at all the other facilities, however I wanted to make sure since there were some recent regulation revisions. I called Daycare Licensing at DHS and they assured me that cloth diapers are neither forbidden nor required; each facility can decide whether they want to do them or not.

So I talked to the director today, and she insists DHS told me wrong. She says she has no idea how all those other places "get away with it", and shows no interest in exploring the issue. Just keeps saying, "Sorry, it isn't up to me."

I decided to read the regulations myself, and they are banned for sick care facilities only. If she doesn't want to do cloth diapers, that's fine, but it bothers me that she is making this erroneous claim. We like the daycare otherwise since they are more in tune with the research on healthy childhood development.

So, how much would this issue bother you?

@Mrs. Pajamas: Ooh I looove the wetness indicator! I didn't know it had that -- good to know!

@Jennibenni: Yay for no leaks! Awesome, I'm really excited to try these!

I decided to go ahead and order the Mama Bear diapers. It'll be so nice to have a nice, cheap, easy-to-access (yay Prime!) back-up when we can't get to Costco to stock up immediately. Thank you all!

@Mrs. Pajamas: Oh, I cannot STAND the smell of Pampers!

I really like the Mama Bear diapers! They’re soft, bleach free, and we’ve had no leaks with them.

@ineebee: we switched to amazon mama bears a few months ago after exclusively using earths best for both of our kids. All of a sudden I found it impossible to get my babys size in earths best anywhere online so we switched. I like them a lot. They are cheaper but still have the no bleach advantages of earths best. They also have the wetness indicator that huggies and Pampers have. But not that awful scent like Pampers. I would totally recommend them.

@DesertDreams88: This is what I was speaking of as well ... In between my Honest.com orders, I place diaper and training pant "club box" orders on Amazon from the warehouse. (When we travel, I also send small orders to wherever we are staying.) Easy-peasy and the prices are spectacular! Thank you for articulating (and affixing a link) when I failed. 🙂

@ineebee: https://www.amazon.com/Disposable-Diapers-Amazon-Warehouse-Deals-Diapering/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=n%3A166772011%2Cp_6%3AA2L77EE7U53NWQ

The boxes are always sealed and so are the diaper packages inside. This explains the warehouse https://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000656811
