@smith: I went through this exact situation. I was zero dilated at 40 weeks so scheduled my induction at 41 weeks. I never went into labor and was still zero dilated when the induction began.
At my 7 am induction, I recieved a folley ballon and pitocin. Both did their job very well and I labored (in tub and with exercise ball) until about 3pm. At this point I was completely dilated but the ballon got stuck behind the babies head, it didn't fall out like it was suppose to. They turned the pitocin off at this point because my body had taken over (yay!) but I was in the worst pain I've ever experienced ( back labor!) and was begging for a epidural at this point, begging.
Got the epidural, started pushing around 6 pm but what happened after this was my experience and doesn't mean what happened to me will happen to you. Couldn't push the baby out, apparently too small of pelvis.... Good to know;) and ended in C section ( best words I've ever heard at that point) well they took my epidural away after not being able to feel myself pushing :(.... I don't hope that on my worst enemy!!
I will never go through that again, Hell No! IM happily scheduling my c section with my 2nd very soon :)!!! If I could have predicted what was going to happen, not being dilated and baby getting being stuck, I'd schedule a C section so I didnt have to experience that.
Hope this doesn't freak you out. I remember being pissed at a nurse who told me it will be the worst pain you'll ever feel. Its the truth. I wish you the best and a super speedy induction. it can happen!!!!!
Good luck sweetie

I was at 0 at 40 weeks. Scheduled induction for 40+6. Failed. Ended up with C-section because there was no progression and her heart rate was not reacting well. I'll have a repeat C-section before I'll be induced again. My body just wasn't having it.

@smith: I was not dilated at 40 weeks. The standard here is they'll let you go to 42 weeks before inducing, but will schedule it at 10 days over if you want. I opted to wait... I still wasn't really dilated at 41+4, but I went into labour that evening. So I really don't think it means anything :)

@smith: I was not dilated at 40 weeks or 41 weeks, so I was induced using the cervical ripening balloon. Because I was not dilated and my cervix was very high, it was very hard to get in but they succeeded. it didn't really work very well but when they pulled it out and broke my water I did go into labour and a successful vaginal birth. It was an extremel long process though - it took 3 days.

That was me. I was 40 weeks+ and 0% everything. You name it, I was zero. I went til 41 and did an induction. He was going to let me go till 42 but the lack of progress (or anything really) concerned him. He thinks she could have stayed in there happily even longer. I wasn't huge, and wasn't terribly uncomfortable.
I had the induction started with cervadil on a thursday night and had the baby 24 hours later after an easy and uncomplicated epidural birth. They did have to break my water and use pit.

My OB doesn't see the point of checking dilation and effacement until you are actually in labour, since it varies so much between women. But when I went to the hospital at 40+4, after my water breaking and 2.5 hours of labour with contractions 2 mins apart, I was 0.5 cm dilated and 100% effaced. An hour later I was 2.5 cm, and was admitted. My baby was born just under 12 hours from the first contraction. My water had broken somewhere during that first half hour after the first contraction. My OB would only have induced me at 41+3, and I knew right to the day I ovulated.

@smith: Yes. This was me. 40 + 0 and not dilated even half a cm. Don't worry! We scheduled an induction (which I would have been fine with) but DS came on his own at 40 + 4. It all started on its own, just a little late, and I dilated fine the rest of the way!

It happened to my friend but she went into labor naturally after her due date. I was never checked (my midwife doesn't perform them until 41 weeks), but I planned to wait as long as possible before inducing. I went into labor naturally at 40+2.

I was 0cm dilated at my 40 week appointment (I think I was 39+6). I went into labor at 40+4 on my own and had a 13 hour labor total. With my second, I was 2cm at 40 weeks and put off an induction as long as possible but had to be induced at 41+3. So you never know!

Good luck though! I know (twice now) how hard it is to go past your due date!

Just had our 40-week appointment (we're 40+2) and I'm still not dilated AT ALL. Doctor tried to manually dilate me with no luck, so we had to have the induction chat. Apparently it's uncommon for women to be past their due date and not dilated (I'm 40% effaced, but such has been the story for about two weeks now), so it seems that induction with the cervical ripening balloon is quite possible.

My question for you, dear Hellobee readers, is has zero dilation (or something similar) at your due date happened to you or someone you know? And if so, did you put off the induction and go into labor naturally, or did you schedule an induction just to get it over with?

Thanks in advance

I was taught and told how to check myself for my second pregnancy since I had a lot of preterm labor with my first. It was pretty interesting going into the Drs office and telling him I was at a 2. Then the look on his face when he checked and I was correct: priceless!!! It was a good way to keep track of things. Hard contractions with no change after two hours is prolly dehydration for me.

Yep because I dilate fast once labour is active. I'm scared of not making it to the hospital on time! The best way to do it is with clean hands or a latex glove and sit on the toilet with one foot propped up. Reach to the back where your spine is and feel for puckered lips. That's your cervix mouth. In the middle is where you will insert two fingers. If you can stick a fingertip in its 1 cm, a full finger loosely is 2 cm, 2 fingers tight is 3 cm and 2 fingers loose is 4 cm. If you are having contractions and bloody show and you are 4 cm then it's time to get to the hospital!

any experience out there with a second babe laying low since early on (see: tons of pelvic pressure!) but the cervix remaining posterior and barely dilated? "half a centimeter" is what i was just told. as much as i want DS to come when he's good and ready, this was a little frustrating. by 39wks i would think the head being engaged since 34 weeks would make for some solid progress in these final weeks. she really had to dig back to reach my cervix and i'm wondering also if the head being in front of the cervix could be why with so much pressure and pain there has been so little dilating?

any information or experience or advice would be appreciated! thanks for letting me get that off my chest. :bummed:

It really has no bearing unfortunately. I was only 1/2 cm dilated when I was induced at 40w5d. My active labor was only 6 hours and I went from a 4 to a 10 in about 3. It really varies woman to woman and pregnancy to pregnancy.

Yeah, sorry, probably not much of an indication. Even IN labor, dilation is not a real great indicator of how long labor will take. But I've known of women who walk around eventually dilated to 8 (so not exaggerating) and go to 41 weeks before labor ever happens.

I firmly believe dilation does NOT have any indication on when you will go into labor.....though I really wish it did!

I was 3.5 centimeters dilated at 38 weeks and 5 centimeters dilated at 39 weeks. It is ABSOLUTE MADNESS that I was just walking around halfway dilated, but I still never went into labor on my own. I was induced at 40 weeks due to high BP.

I'm a FTM, so please bear with me if this is a silly question. For those of you who have given birth, I was wondering if there was a correlation between being dilated early and giving birth earlier.

I had a fluid scare earlier this week and it turns out that at 33 1/2 weeks, I am already 2 cm dilated. When I had an ultrasound yesterday they told me that baby boy's head is firmly in my pelvis and he's in a ready position. I'm 34 weeks as of today, so I still have a few weeks, but now I can't help but wonder if I will go soon after 37 weeks with these signs or if this is just how it's going to be until my due date.

Did any of you have similar stories and when did you give birth?
