@dc yoga bee: I tried to get DH on board with BumGenius and Swaddlebees Simplex AIOs with disposable liners. We had a full stash and I used them, but I was never able to sway him like I thought I would. My only advice would be to make SURE you can get your husband fully on board. I ended up selling all our diapers a few weeks ago because towards the end, I wasn't using them much at all (since DH wouldn't touch them and daycare didn't allow them). Good luck!

Not many blowouts after the first few weeks, just be warned that when they do happen, they happen at the most inopportune time! We live in an apt too so didn't flush. You can only compost the pee diapers and we don't have a composter any way so just threw them away. The nice part is not putting any plastic in the garbage so they break down much faster and more completely.

@looch: We live in an apartment, so I don't plan to flush them. I read something about a compostable bag we could use for the liners. I'm interested in that. If not, we will throw liners out.

@shortcake: good to know! Did you have a lot of blowouts with these?

We did not use the extra liners. I found them unnecessary and a little scratchy. Never had a problem with the disposable liners absorbing enough. With big poops, sometimes the plastic liner gets dirty but then just throw it in the wash. Very occasionally even the cloth pants get dirty and just throw those in the wash too.

We also used Gdiapers, I love the system. We used the cloth inserts though, as we lived abroad and didn't really have access to the disposable liners.

The only thing that belongs in the toilet is poop and pee and toilet paper...don't flush any kinds of liners or inserts. The plumbing systems aren't equipped to handle it. Also, flush the poop from the liner, don't just put it into the trash.

@dc yoga bee: Are you planning on BF'ing? My LO is 4.5 months and his poo is still so liquidy I doubt a liner would catch all that much.. maybe I'm wrong?
We use pockets and a lot of the 'liquid' is still absorbed through the pocket and into the insert. That being said, you don't have to rinse EBF poopy so it's not an issue. The liners might be more effective when your LO is having more solid poops. Maybe other users can chime in on the effectiveness of disposable liners for EBF babies?

We used gdiapers and used the disposable inserts exclusively and are now using them again with our next kid. I absolutely love them. It might be a tiny drop more labor intensive, but honestly, they just become part of the routine like everything else baby related. They are awesome. Cute, easy to use, work great and environmentally so much better. Let me know if you have any questions about them.

@maddyz: The flushable liners are biodegradable. I'm not too familiar with them yet, but i thought they were safe?

ETA: Just found this on their website. I definitely don't want to defeat the purpose of Eco-friendly!:

Our disposable inserts are the only diaper to be certified Cradle to Cradle(cm) Silver, which means that everything that goes into them will go back to the earth in a neutral or positive way. They are made of cellulose rayon, fluffed wood pulp, and super absorber. That's it. They're elemental chlorine free, latex free, perfume free and dye free. The cellulose rayon and fluffed wood pulp comes from sustainably grown and harvested softwood. Super absorber is sodium polyacrylate (SAP) and is a non-toxic water absorbing polymer. Our disposable inserts are made in the USA.

gPants are 92% cotton and 8% spandex. The snap-in pouch is a breathable nylon.

gDiapers Cloth inserts are made of 2 layers of polyester microfleece and 2 layers of hemp/cotton.

I don't know about diaper liners, but I do know that flushable wipes are a really big problem for sewer systems and the environment. My guess is that diaper liners are the same kind of material.

Just something to think about...

@dc yoga bee: yeah these don't do that. Although if you aren't going to have cloth against the babys private parts, I'm not sure the benefits are there so much....we get more rashes in disposables around the crotch versus the cheeks.

Thanks for the options!!! We live in an apartment, so I'm not sold on whether our plumbing could hold flushing the inserts daily. I'm going to look into these other brands too! I showed some gdiaper videos to DH, and he acted like he wasn't paying a whole lot of attention. Then, when my mom came and I showed her what the gdiapers look like, he was telling her all about them in intimate detail. It was so funny!

Another option is flip and grovia which are both AIO systens. We've used flip covers and disposable inserts for travel it works pretty well, I prefer my regular cloth diapers because I'm cheap and I can get regular disposables on sale for cheaper ($0.16/diaper) than flip inserts ($0.39/each) when needed but I don't have any other systems & I bought this one off craigslist for cheap and I've never tried to buy another. No matter what system you go with you'll still be washing cover which will get pee/poop on them maybe not everytime but throughout the day. And no inserts should ever be flushed even if they claim they can be, wastewater pumps are designed to take care of 3" spheres at the pump station but your plumbing probably isn't.

Another gDiapers fan! We've used only the disposable inserts and I have loved them, we are using them now on our 2nd LO. They are extremely absorbent and the only time they leak is if you put them on wrong. We had maybe 2 blowouts the entire time with my son and have never had any with my daughter.

When my son was just over a year we had to switch to disposables at night since he was soaking through the gdiaper insert, but they were fine during the day. When he was a bit older and not drinking so much right before bed, we went back to the g inserts. My DD at 11 months has never woken up wet yet.

The major selling point for me is that the inserts are 100% biodegradable. When we lived in the US, we would just flush the inserts. They can't be flushed in Europe though, but I do feel better about putting them in the trash. Also, we have very rarely had to deal with diaper rash using gdiapers, which I've heard is another benefit. And finally, the company is AWESOME. I follow then on fb and they genuinely care about their employees, babies and their mission.

@dc yoga bee: I did gdiapers. I used cloth and disposable inserts (flushable) at first. She was a heavy wetter and the flushables just worked so much better than the cloth so eventually I was doing all flushables with the cloth covers.

I freaking loved gdiapers. I think I had maybe 2-3 blow-outs the entire time she was diapers. She was in size small for a few months and quickly moved into size medium and stayed in them until she potty trained at 24 months. All my friends who did disposables had multiple blowouts and leaks and outfit changes. I never has those issues. I got my flushables using coupn codes from diapers.com and then Amazon subscribe and save

I would really like to cloth diaper. DH wasn't too enthused with the idea of dumping, rinsing, and then tossing a cloth insert into the pail for washing. Then I discovered gdiapers with the flushable/disposable insert. I also found that Charlie Banana has disposable insert ( I think we could get these in all in one size). DH said he could get on bored with tossing the liner. Does anyone use cloth diapers with disposable inserts exclusively? Do they absorb well, and hold up to leaks? Do you have any experience with these brands? I did some quick math, and we were either looking at cloth with disposable inserts or something like Honest diapers, and we'd still save $500-$600 going the cloth with disposable insert route, so I'm not as concerned that the disposable insert is more costly than the cloth liner. I'm trying to get DH on board!
