We have a Shepard/lab/chow. He's great with her. It's about 12 years old and we rescued him 9 years ago. When I was a nanny I took him to work every day with the 5 year old in my care. He was great with him. We also have an Aussie that was not a rescue.

@ShootingStar: @Torchwood: so sweet! Love it

Thanks everyone, luckily the organization we'd probably go through fosters dogs with families and they have thorough run through on the dogs before they adopt them out

Our dogs aren't rescues (which I feel guilty about), but they LOVE LO. She loves them too. I'm excited to see them play as she gets older.

We have a rescue Boston Terrier and she is a pain in the butt. But....we knew that going in. :) We actually have had two BT's. Our next dog will be a rescue but probably won't happen until after Thumper passes. I love dogs and kids together. :)

We have a rescue dog, but we got her from a shelter a few years before LO came home. Our pup is pretty obsessed with LO, but I do think it helps that we knew her quirks before we brought home a baby. I agree with above posters that a dog from a rescue group would be a good way to go!

We have 2 rescue dogs (and 2 rescue cats). They are pretty good with LO, though one still is a little nervous around her and the other is a little too exuberant with his kisses for LO's taste. Ironically one of the cats is her BFF and they cuddle all the time. We've done a lot of training/teaching about respecting each other's spaces and we never leave them alone together for safety reasons. I agree with looking for a rescue group that uses foster homes, if you can find one that already has kids that would be so helpful!

ETA cute pic of LO helping one of the pups guard :)

We have two shelter dogs but we had them years before we had kids. At our shelter, they state if the dogs are good around kids or other pets.

Both our dogs are good around the twins. The only thing is the cocker spaniel likes to steal pacifiers if we leave them out. We just had to be more careful not to leave them out for him to get to.

I'd recommend going through a foster group vs a shelter (or maybe a shelter that has foster homes). When they're at a foster home they know what the dogs are like and usually know if they're kid friendly. Also you'll want to look for an larger dog breed as they usually do better with kids. Petfinder and Petango are great websites that you can type in your zipcode and find local rescues and dogs.

Just talk to the people in the organization and respect them when they say you can't adopt a certain dog. They want to make sure it's a good fit for you and the pup .

We have a rescue lab mix and she is so sweet with DD! She loves to give her kisses and tries to get her to play (DD is only 5.5 months so she can't really do much yet). Sometimes the dog will roll over and lay with her head in DD's lap and it is so adorable! She has knocked DD over a few times on accident but that doesn't really concern me. It just helps teach DD to be tough.

We had our dog for ~5 years before baby (dog was about 6.5 years old when DD was born).

Our two rescue dogs are wonderful with LO. Just be very very picky and be sure to get the most easygoing laid back dog you can find, and stay away from nervous reactive dogs. Teach LO gentle touch and to respect the dog's space, and train the dog to respect LO's place in the pack.

Our own LO isn't here yet, but our rescue dog LOVES kids and is generally super friendly and non-dominant/aggressive. Obviously that isn't always a given, but I'm sure a shelter/group could help you find a family-friend rescue dog.

We have 3 rescues! The only one I was nervous about before LO arrived has done amazing with him so far. They don't play together and I don't think that will happen until further along, but they coexist very well.

We have had our rescue dog for 3 years. He is a pitbull/pointer mix. He is amazing with our 14 month old daughter. So so patient. She actually takes his toys from him and he just lets her. The biggest issue we have had is that he is a 65 lb high energy dog and has knocked her over a couple of times now that she is walking. But since she is so used to him it doesn't really phase her.

I will say that we never leave them alone unsupervised for the safety of both of them.

The city pound here is amazing and actually tests dogs w kids and other dogs and gives recommendations on what type of home would best suit the dog. Maybe ypu can find a rescue or shelter that would do similar testing near you so you have a better idea on the temperament of the dog you are going to adopt.

Good luck! It's nice to see you want to rescue

I think they just need to be fully vetted by a reputable shelter with experienced staff that the rescued dog is good with kids under all circumstances!

Most rescues will do screenings and only place dogs that are a fit for your family. So since you have young children they will take that into account.

We don't have rescue dogs, but we just got our 2 dogs from my husband's uncle for free. They are lab/shepard mixes, and they are both AMAZING with our 5 month old!! They love her to pieces.

Also to add, before we got both of our dogs they were just farm dogs/puppies. No social interaction at all, and now they are 2 and 3 and love people!

Our Saint Bernard passed away a few months before LO2 was born and we are actively missing a family pet.

We have a great situation for a dog so I'm not concerned we could take care of it etc. We prefer to rescue a dog and adopt it rather than purchase an animal so we have some concerns.

Do you have a rescue dog? How do they do with your little kids?
