@SweetiePie: Thanks for sharing! I'm going to consider this more seriously now bc I know lack of sleep makes my anxiety skyrocket. Dude, everything is so much more $$ in NYC.

@JessyMess: Oh and she was $50/hr. Which is insane BUT 1) I'm in NYC and 2) she was from an agency. So both of those factors make it more expensive.
An actual night nurse was cheaper. She would do overnight for like $200 or $250 for a full 24 hours. We eventually got one because my PPD was really impacted by sleep (or lack thereof). So she came 3-4 nights a week so I could get good rest every other night or so. For me it was crucial. I felt silly getting it but looking back I should have done it sooner.

@Cole: Yessss! I've never heard a story where the MIL was more helpful than annoying. Not to hate on MILs, I have a really cool one that I love. I just know a paid impartial employee that pampers new moms for a living is going to be much more helpful than a family member who "back in my day... blah blah" relives the experience of having their own babies through you.

@SweetiePie: OH good! I was worried about asking her to come a couple hours a few times a week. I'd rather that schedule than full time, so she lasts longer. Nice to know it worked for someone else. I agree, I want the care for myself so that I can care for the baby.

I had one and it was great. She was pricey but she wasn't meant to be with me all day every day. She came a few hours a few days a week. She was an excellent confidant/sounding board, she taught me a lot in terms of newborn care, she was also an LC, she did things like dishes while the baby slept or rubbed my feet while I fed the baby. She made me make a list of chores or baby things I needed help with since I'm not good at outwardly asking for help. That way she came in and could easily see what I needed help with and dove right in. What I liked is that she cared for me as much as or maybe even more than she cared for the baby. I really needed that.
I think we bought a 40 hour block of her time and every couple of days we'd discuss our schedules and plan the next couple of days and we just deducted the time from the block.
It's been 2.5 years and I still keep in touch. Would definitely use her again for another if it happens.

@JessyMess: I need to start dropping hints to my husband now! He's convinced his mom is going to be a godsend and I'm convinced she's going to drive me cuckoo! I need someone to come for a few hours, get stuff done and to leave and not judge me for eating carbs for the fifth time today.

@LulaBee: This is exactly what I want. Someone to take care of stuff while I can sleep worry-free.
@Cole: The doula I am hiring actually says in her profile that she will dote on you like a wife

The doula I hired is $30/hr during the day and $40/hr overnight. She said she can take the baby, prep meals, and do housework while I get uninterrupted alone time to shower and sleep. I'm looking forward to it! She will also provide belly binding services to help support the internal organs shifting back into place and back support during nursing. She makes herbal sitz baths too. I think the biggest difference I see between hiring someone and having my family help is my family will help how they want and when they want, whereas I can leave the doula a to do list and she will multi task and work like an actual housewife/Momboss to get it all done.

I could've used someone with my first child to show me baby care like swaddling and babywearing, but I'm confident in those skills now.

@Cole: ah interesting. Thanks. Baby nurses are really popular where I live (metro NYC) but I've only heard of post partum doulas in passing. This would be more of my jam should I have another kid.

@Littlebit7: I think in many ways they are pretty similar although but my understand is a baby nurse usually doesn't do housework related stuff and wants a longer commitment, I think most pp doulas are open to very short term (like a few hours) positions. I think the price point is similar. It seems to me that most pp doulas have training whereas anyone can call themselves a baby nurse.

is it a matter of semantics or are they different things?

I never have used one but my best friend recently had #2 and has used one twice for overnights. She brings the baby to my friend for feedings and takes care of everything else. She also made them dinner in the crock pot. My friend thinks the uninterrupted sleep helped her not have PPD this time around.

I'm a birth doula but know lots of postpartum doulas and they'll pretty much do anything you need/ask! Housework, childcare for the newborn or siblings, overnight shifts so you can sleep, errands, etc.

I looked into it but did not really need it with my first- I'd do it with subsequent children I think. My babysitter is really great though too- she will stuff diapers and pick up the house- which I have never asked her to do it she just does. She's 15 so I suspect it's what she does at home

I had one after I had my second. We live in Utah with no family around, so I just basically wanted an extra pair of hands to help out. They were great and literally did anything I asked. They would entertain my toddler while I took care of the baby, light housework, meal prep, run errands, etc...

I loved it! They would also help with the baby like @Cole: said, but like her, I didn't really need/want that. It was seriously a lifesaver in those early weeks!

I'm curious too! I follow a local one on Facebook and I feel like a lot of what she posts about is helping parents figure out what to do with a newborn basically and I don't really need help with that element (I'm sure there are things to be learned still but this wouldn't be my priority.) I'd love someone to come take both kids or at least my toddler and do a load of laundry and catch up on dishes while I nap... I basically want a wife.

I think they run about $25 an hour here so maybe I'd be better off with a house keeper and a few hours of a sitter? I need daily basics help more than mopped floors though but I feel like housekeepers don't do dishes and pick up kids toys.

I'm curious if anyone here has used a doula for postpartum care.
What did the doula do specifically?
What did you ask her to do?
How much, ballpark, did you end up spending?

I'm looking to get one for my 2nd baby due in May. I plan on delivering at a birth center unmedicated and going home the same day as delivery. I remember it was an exhausting time with my first, and my Mom wasn't as much help as I needed, so I thought a postpartum doula would help.
