update for any poor unfortunate people looking for loud dryer help in the future !

we had the vent cleaned and it is still loud. had the repairman back and the motor is dying. we're probably going to just get a new dryer now. this one was probably 8-10 years old.

@Andrea: oh, my dryer takes forever to do a load. I usually have to run it twice. Our laundry room is in the middle of the house so I have no idea where the vent goes. I know where it ends up. Maybe I'll get the DH to convince our landlord to pay for half of the fee.

Yes, try and clean the vent. Our dryer was taking forever to dry a load of clothes, like 4 hours, and DH cleaned the vent. Problem solved!

This just happened to us. while I was out shopping for a new dryer my DH cleaned out our vent and lo and behold our dryer is perfect again. Took him about an hour and he came down with a bucket full of lint, bird nest and unfortunately a bird. Our dryer is good as new now!

@BeachMama: I am so impressed! I wish we were that handy. We don't have an attic and I don't really trust DH on an outdoor ladder, ha, so we have to wait for the people to come clean it. I definitely want that done as the first step either way because it hasn't been done in 2 years, possibly as long as 8 years and the fire risk scares me.

Im still not convinced it will fix the noise though, ugh. I've actually laid a ton of clothes out to dry flat or hanging lately to avoid hearing it and I feel like a colonial woman.

I don't know how handy you or DH is, but my DH just cleaned our vent which goes thru the attic to the roof himself with a tool he bought at Home Depot. Our dryer wasn't noisy before that but now works SO much better. It's also a huge fire hazard to have the vent clogged up.

Last week, out of nowhere, our dryer started vibrating VERY loudly. Called the repairman and he told me there's nothing wrong with the dryer and that the air vent on top of the house (most people have it on the side of theirs) probably needs to be cleaned out. The people who do that haven't called me back yet...

Does anyone have experience with this? It doesn't seem right to me but I'm obviously no expert. Im so annoyed drying anything because it's on our bedroom level and way too loud whether we are awake or asleep. Andddd at 36 weeks pregnant I would really like to be washing and drying baby stuff.

I try to line dry in the summer but our set up is annoying so it's a lot of work to do it. Year round I dry towels, jeans, sweaters, diapers, etc on a drying rack inside. So I still run the dryer a lot but I can often combine two loads into one.

I don't know about allergies but I never dried baby clothes on the line because I was nervous about things irritating the skin.

I mostly just dry sheets and towels in the dryer. I can't hang up the sheets easily, or else I'd line dry them, too. I don't even use a clothesline. I mostly put the clothes right on the hangers and hang them up on the shower curtain rod. A few go on a drying rack. They are dry by the end of the day (at the latest, usually by lunch) and then I put them straight into the closet. I'd like to be able to take them outside, but our weather can be tricky.

@lamariniere: @looch: You're right, the hills hoist does work very well for drying the clothes, and takes up significantly less room than a line would, I just find it a pain to put up and down...and the spiderwebs that seem to show up on them overnight also creep me out... Other than that though, I have to admit they work well! Our clothes were dry yesterday in an hour, despite the overcast skies!

In regards to some other responses, I'm curious about those who cited allergies as a reason not to line dry. I have terrible seasonal allergies, but despite our line being under our massive oak tree, and out amongst the rest of the plants and flowers we have in our garden, I've never had a problem with the clothes exacerbating my allergies. Is drying something that is recommended to minimise the allergens exposure?

I dry a few delicate or pill-prone items along with things I'm concerned will shrink indoors. But definitely all sheets, towels, underthings except bras, etc. get dried in the dryer. MIL rarely uses her dryer so I've had to convince DH that nice dryers used properly donT ruin clothes! :)

Eta: I HATE crunchy clothes, which is what I feel line drying often does.

@Ree723: you're definitely right in that Australians have a thing about line drying their clothes :D I have a retractable 9m x 6 lines under my deck and I dry things out there every wash. If its snappy cold outside I put them on a clothes horse and sit them on top of the ducted heating vent. I will always 100% never fail to stick my towels in the dryer - I HATE scratchy towels!!

I voted never because we don't have one. We do have a hills hoist like you mentioned! However, I'm considering getting a dryer before baby arrives just to make the constant washing a little easier. It rains all winter in south australia so it can get annoying trying to dry things inside.

But we didn't have one growing up b/c my mom doesn't like dryers! I've tried to convince many times how great they are. She hangs everything in the basement and outside when it's nice out. I feel towels and things get really stiff that way, but the fresh air is nice.

I usually take out the "big" stuff to line-dry, like pants, sweaters, sweatshirts, dresses, (also bras) but I don't like the feel of a socks or underwear that I have been line dried so those go in the dryer, every time. But I really only do it on sunny days. I live on the coast in California and it's not always sunny or warm, so I don't want to have my clothes outside for days on end.

Growing up we used a clothes line to dry our clothes during nice weather (anytime it wasn't raining). I enjoyed helping my mom hang things up. Now we have two posts in our back yard but the clothesline is broken and they are underneath a nectarine tree which is a mess in the summer. I don't know if it would work to use it. Maybe I'll have to try it out this summer...

We have a lot of clothes that have to be line dried, so we always have a small rack set up in our bedroom, but we definitely put everything else in the dryer.

It's usually raining around here, so even if we didn't live in an apartment line drying outside would be impractical.
