@sarah.clarisse: It is overwhelming! That's why I'm starting to figure things out now, even if we don't move for 2 years! I want to know what I'm getting into.

@sslm: @looch: I'm encouraged that y'all didn't have a huge wait for daycare. Sounds like I'll have to take advantage of my school's huge alumni network for some word of mouth help!

@lawbee11: Yes!! Where do y'all live, anyways? (Gold wall post me)

We did this. We moved for my job. I knew 6 months in advance that I had the job and we'd be moving. DH started applying immediately but didn't find something until almost a year later :(. We had our name on several daycare waiting lists and he stayed home with LO until he found a job.

No advice for you... Because I'm going through the same thing right now. We want to relocate to another state but would both need new jobs, daycare, and a place to rent. It make me so overwhelmed that I want to give up on our dream before even trying
Hoping others have more tips!

We didn't end up moving, but we thought hard about it. The way we were going to do it was have my husband find a job first (he makes more than I do), then either have me try to transfer within my company or look for a new job in our new city.

We have friends who recently moved across the country. The husband found the job first and commuted between the 2 coasts for a few months and the wife & kids followed after they decided for sure to move. They looked for a rental home at first and I think they were going to try to buy something after 6 months or so. The wife just transferred within the same company to a similar position located in their new city.

We just did this! M was 11.5 months.

I wanted to move back to my hometown (about 1500km away!). I found a job first, I'm an engineer, DH is an accountant. He didn't start looking until I had a job. My job paid some relocation which is nice.

Daycare: I just bugged the crap out of the ones I wanted to get her into until a spot opened up. Luckily my mom offered to watch Madeline until a spot came up bc my husband ended up getting a job pretty much right away!

If he couldn't find a job my husband would've stayed home with Madeline until he did. Luckily we could afford to live with just me working...

Feel free to ask me questions! We ended up with a lot just sort of falling into our lap so I don't know if I'll be much help...

So, in our last move, my husband was the one that had the job first. I had no intention of working, but I had a great offer that I couldn't refuse, that actually came about because someone heard through the grapevine that my husband was returning to the US, so I went back to work about 2 months after our international move. His job did not pay for relocation, but they did pay for our flights, which cost an arm and a leg because we needed 3 business class international flights.

We stayed with my parents and we house hunted on the weekends. I found a spot for my son in a day care by word of mouth, my mom spread the word and we were able to jump the waiting list because of our situation. We basically lived with the contents of 3 suitcases until we bought our house. We put all our things in storage.

@kjpugs: Thank you! We do have family in our current city, so that might be an option for DH to stay with them for a bit. Good idea!

We moved from FL to IN for DH's job. We were prepared for me to stay there while I job searched, but I actually found a transfer within my company that was even more awesome than my existing job. If it was a 1.5 hour commute I would maybe work out a long day, 4 day a week schedule and stay in that city and go back to new city on weekends. I would stay with friends/family when going back if possible.

Mostly I've learned from this, don't stress about it until you have a job offer in new city for one of you! Then you can see where you're at and see what works best for you and your family at that time. Good luck!

DH and I will be moving to a city in the same state in anywhere from 1-4 years. A lot of it is based on what happens with his job in the next year, hence the long range.

DH and I both work full time, and have a 1 year old who will need daycare. We will want to buy a house in our new city, not rent (renting is $$$$).

Ok, so logistically, has anyone done this? Did *both* of you have jobs before you moved? Did one career take back burner? How the heck did you get into a daycare? Can you buy a house in the middle of changing jobs?

I could conceivably be a WOHM for a year if we couldn't get into daycare/I couldn't find a job, but I'm really much more likely to find a job than DH is. Along the same vein, DH could conceivably make the 1.5 hour commute every day if necessary until he found employment.

I have LOTS of questions about how the heck to relocate a dual-career family. Any tips or 'what worked for you' stories for me?
