L has tons of ear wax that can sometimes look weird like this when a bunch works its way out of his ear at once. I had his pedi check it out because he was grabbing his ears a lot too, but she said they looked great! If he's not in pain I wouldn't worry about it.

@Tanjowen: OMG! I started a thread about the same thing this afternoon. R's right ear has brown/yellow discharge but she doesn't seemed botherd by it, except when I used the qtip to clean it. It is a lot better but I am going to call the pedi tomorrow.

Thanks everyone. He woke up okay this morning and I'm keeping an eye on him - no more ear discharge and he's acting normal, but going to call the pediatrician in the morning just to be extra safe :)

@MamaMoose: I somehow thought that babies would act in a lot of pain if they had an ear infection...did something tip you off your LO had one, or did you go in to see the pedi and he caught it?

DD woke up with brownish/reddish crusty ear wax one morning that looked like dried blood. Our ped said it was ok, ear wax can be many colors. We took her in the next day for a checkup just in case and everything was fine. So I'd say unless he's acting sick or has a fever, it's probably ok.

My LO produces a lot of wax and her ears often get like this. It could just be that your LO is waxy like mine!

My daughter does also get frequent ear infections and is finally getting tubes on Friday. However, this shouldn't be related to her waxiness though.

My LO got an ear infection EVERY time she cut a tooth until we got tubes. If it continues or he acts off at all, if probably get him checked out. When we brought M in for the first ear infection her pedi was shocked at how bad the ear infection was because she really wasn't fussing and wasn't running a fever.

D gets ear wax drainage when he's congested or teething. He's getting his 6 year molars in and it's been rough.

My LO has tubes and just had this, I think it's from an infection in my lo's case. He hasn't acted bothered (though it's kind of hard to say for sure since I noticed it shortly after we returned from a long trip, during which he was kind of crabby!)

I'd call the pedi just in case!

My LO woke up this morning with an earful of a dried brown substance in his right ear. It wiped out easily, did not smell, and I assume it was ear wax...but I am concerned it's a sign of an ear problem or possibly a start to an ear infection? He is teething, but he hasn't run a fever and is sleeping okay.

Anyone have this before? Is it normal for ear wax to just ooze out during the night?
