@Mrs.Macaroon: Congrats! I actually heard on a podcast once that the number may not double but around a 66% increase is normal. That's about what your first one was.

I just wanted to come back with an update this morning. My HcG was up to 175 on Saturday. So it more than doubled! After talking with the nurse on Friday, I sent an email to the nurse that has been following since the beginning and she didn't seem as concerned. I'm waiting to hear the next steps, but so relieved that my draw on Saturday did double.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences, it made the weekend a bit more bearable, and kept me from losing it.

@snarkybiochemist: just realize we had almost the exact same experience (down to my "bad" draw also being on a Friday!).

@Mrs.Macaroon: also wanted to add, I've actually been pregnant 4 times (2 children) and my HCG has always been low and never doubled regularly. I think some people also just process HCG differently.

I want to echo what @DesertDreams88: said about it being so early I think it's less reliable.

With my first son (Ivf) my first beta was only 84 at 4w exactly. It did double the first time but then it only had a 70% rise. I prepared for the worst and he is now an active 4 year old.

Fingers crossed you have similar luck.

@Mrs.Macaroon: one of my girlfriends just went through a series of chemical pregnancies where her second blood draw was always lower than her first one. Recently she got pregnant again and for the first time her second blood draw was higher than the first, but pretty far off from doubling. The nurse prepared her for another miscarriage. Well, she's now 12 weeks with a healthy baby! So as the others said, there can be a wide range of normal when you're very early so I wouldn't lose hope.

I went in for my first beta at 3+6 it was 57 two days later it had almost doubled and my 3rd draw at 4+3 only showed a 66% increase, that draw was a Friday so I spent all weekend crossing my fingers and trying not to panic, my 4th draw was 560 and nicely within doubling times. My doctor tested me until my HCG was 1000+ and then scheduled my first ultrasound. I am now 29.5 wks.

There's really a huge range of what normal can be, but two hopeful things:
1) This early on, there's a BIG range for numbers AND growth rate. Things don't get more predictable until later around week 5. Sometimes it takes a bit of time for baby to get nestled in and growing.

2) Technically, anything over a 66% growth is a good sign. "Doubling" is just an easier, safer calculation so that's the one most talked about. Both of my OBs (sep. practices) actually do betas 3 days apart, and check for doubling at 3 days.

Have you checked out this website? http://www.betabase.info/

I finally get to post here and its not how i imagined it would be. After 1.5 years of infertility, DH and I found out that i was finally pregnant, and we did it all on our own. (we were told we had a 3% chance of conceving naturally. I went for my first HCG at 3w6d and it was a 55, then my second at 4w1day was only 84 and my progesterone at 21. So a nurse called me this morning and said i needed to go for a 3rd HSG to see what the pattern is. She asked if i was spotting at all which set off alarms in my head that something is not right. Of course i was sitting at work with a coworker sitting across from me. On lunch I called back and talked with the same nurse. I let her know that based on our early conversation, i was not feeling great about the results and needed more clarification. I know that they are supposed to double, but couldn't believe that she didn't just flat out say that was their concern. Now of course its Friday, i have to go tomorrow for bloodwork and won't have any info until Monday. I spent the rest of my lunch googling "successful pregnancy with low HCG levels".

Is it possible that this may still be a healthy pregnancy, and we will finally have a baby, or do i need to start preparing my heart for an unavoidable miscarriage?

Any ladies have similar stories that had a happy ending?

There are no absolutes in pregnancy. Some women spot, some bleed, some don't. It can be a sign of impending miscarriage, or it may not be. Either way, it isn't anything you can control.

@Curious_Katty: I spotted for about 8 weeks, mostly brown. I was on progesterone suppositories so I thought that might have been the cause but I am 5w3d now and on progesterone with no spotting! Baby#1 was perfectly healthy and my pregnancy and labor were wonderful.

It is completely redundant to my previous post and I'm still trying to conceive. I've heard spotting can be a sign of either ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage. Just wanted to know - is it possible to keep spotting infrequently during early gestation?

Update... so the ultrasound showed the pregnancy measures at 5.5 weeks even though I was at 6W2D from my LMP. So I guess that means I ovulated a bit later than average? I'm still fuzzy on how the whole "weeks" thing works. Anyway, they told me that that's early to see anything so for now everything is good and going as expected. Will have to wait 2 weeks to do a follow-up ultrasound. The wait will be torture but I feel better knowing that at that point I should be able to get some more clarity.
