My son has zero experience with coding apps of any kind and it frustrates him.

I was just given one for my first grade classroom to help my English language learners. I have the tangram, words and numbers kit which retails for $100 I think. You can also get the Newton (manipulating a ball through courses using everyday objects) and Masterpiece (take a picture of what you want and you can draw on paper while watching yourself draw on the screen) apps for free without extra equipment. I haven't used the coding one yet since our district didn't purchase that. My students are obsessed with the Osmo and it's so easy to learn how to use. My students are 6 and 7.

Any recommendations? What ages and what games? I've seen it at trade shows and it looks pretty cool. My daughters school is using it for early coding (a separate game). The big thing I don't like is you have to remove the iPad case to get the camera to fit.

Fake it til' you make it.

Meaning, there is no first choice or second choice preschool anymore. This just IS the school your kid is going to go to, so you're going to tell your child and yourself that this is about to be an AWESOME new experience that's going to be SO fun and there is going to be SO much new learning and you're just going to say that over and over every day, even if you don't feel like it at first, and over time you are just going to settle into YOUR preschool. Force yourself to find something to like about the school every day and just do it. Chin up, mama.

@looch: I hope this is true! Actually just putting a list of good things about #2 down in writing is helping me focus on the positive.

@mediagirl: Yes! And I keep forgetting that LO's friend will be there. My kid and change do not mix. So I'm hoping it helps.

@mauxie: Thanks so much for your input. I'm beginning to realize how great it will be to have a familiar face there. I've just been so stuck on "Boo, we just can't get into our first choice" mode. But really, the 2nd choice is good. Maybe even great. Thinking about staying on the waitlist for #1, but I think there would also be pros and cons for moving LO again before moving for kindergarten. You know?

I think the daycare friend going to #2 is a huge plus! Not just for your son, but for you as a parent to at least know another parent to help navigate the new school/culture.

Is it possible at all for you to stay on the waitlist for #1 and possibly move if there's an opening (assuming the price difference and location are a big factor)?

I think something you can hold onto is that he has a friend there. That is SUCH a big thing when transitioning, knowing someone in the class. It's so hard to deal with change but it will be a little easier for him with someone he knows there. To love it - get to know the teachers, their philosophy. Spend some time there. Watch him interact with others there. It will take a while to get used to it and to become comfortable there but I think once he starts and he starts making friends there, you'll make peace with it.

We really want to go to 1st choice preschool and have been trying since January. It has a great ratio, excellent teachers and programs, a good mix of teaching philosophies, good location. They have no openings. I have tried everything.

My newly turned 3 yo has outgrown his current in-home daycare/preschool. We have to go to our 2nd choice. The 2nd choice is bigger, has a comparable teaching philosophy, further away, and a friend that used to go to the same daycare.

How do I change my feelings so that my 2nd choice feels like my 1st choice?

ETA: 2nd choice is also more expensive.

We frequent the San Diego zoo and its sister park, the safari park. I absolutely love them. They are very into conservation and rehabilitation... And the exhibits are very animal friendly as opposed to cages and crates. I think it's a great educational experience for kids, too. If I lived in a different climate or if the zoo were clearly made for entertainment purposes, I would probably feel differently.

@youboots: I'm surprised to hear anyone describe the Portland zoo as nice, I find it utterly depressing. They're doing a ton of work to it, and I think that in 5 years it'll be a pretty nice space. But ugh, did you see the elephant enclosure before they started expanding it this year? Just, depressing. And the polar bears?

I think that zoos do a lot of great conservation work, which is great, but I do find them to be quite depressing overall. I really disagree with the notion that we all have the right to see these animals up close that are so far out of their natural habitats. I would generally support a movement to limit zoos to only animals that are native to the area.

My daughter loves ours, so we go, but I do feel quite conflicted about it. Obviously not enough to not go, though.

We don't really have any zoos here, but I can't wait to take LOs to the San Diego Zoo one day!

There is a wildlife rehabilitation center at one of the state parks nearby that we hang out at a lot. It's definitely not a zoo - you can only see the animals if they happen to be out in the yard. Or they will walk the owls through in the mornings sometimes. It's only native species too, so bears, Eagles, owls, etc.

And lots of fish!

@honeybear: Agreed entirely.

I think some zoos can be done well and probably nice places, but I'd much rather my kiddo see animals in their natural habitats (even if that only includes the deer and squirrels that frequent our backyard). I didn't visit many zoos growing up but I'm a HUGE proponent for animal conservation and have my MS in Environmental Conservation, so I definitely think it's something that can be instilled in children without having to take them to a place that might not be as well run as it should be.
