I wouldn't give up on it just yet, unless you have to drop the hospital providers in order to see the EI providers. There's so much paperwork involved with EI and so many different steps that sometimes it takes a while to get the ball rolling.

I wouldn't give up the hospital therapy for EI but if EI would be in addition to what you're already doing I think it's worth some headaches to get your boys as much help/support as is available to them.

We have been having less then optimal communication with EI since we moved. I am considering dropping EI all together.

Here are the facts:
-My boys can/do receive services (for no charge) at either the children's hospital or off site therapy location.
- The boys LOVE the hospital providers
- We haven't met with any providers from EI
- EI keeps reminding me that N will age out in the fall
- when I met with our service coordinator she didn't have therapist assigned
- Now there are therapist assigned but we haven't heard a peep from them

Should I give them time? Should I just drop it and stay with the hospital/ off site therapy folks?

@YouGotMe: @Mrs. Champagne: Thanks for your input, I think I would be able to do 600 before applying again.

@Rubies: My board does do top-ups, but as I'm an OT I won't be eligible for the top ups. Thanks for the info about the meetings, I haven't heard of those!

My main concern is if I can't find a job this summer I'll be applying for EI, but I don't want to screw myself over for mat leave if I end up needing it early next year. But, if there's no limit to timing (having an open ei claim and mat leave claim within a short amount of time) as long as the 600 hours is met I might be OK.

I know I can call, but getting through on the phone is a nightmare, so I figured I would ask here in case any one has just went through it and can offer some insight. Thanks for your help ladies. :)

Hi!

Not a teacher but also in ontario. When I applied for my maternity leave/EI I was told the amount of weeks they look at varies on the area you live in.

And I think as long as you work 600 hours after EI this summer you can qualify again!

@WinterBee: Hi - you won't find helpful information about mat leave on your Board's website. What you should do is contact your OSSTF branch office and they will provide you with all the mat leave info you will need. Your OSSTF branch office should offer 1-2 mat leave workshops to walk you through it all (my branch has one in November and again in April...something like that). As for top-up, I think it varies from board to board. Do you mind my asking which board you work for? My board tops-up for the first 8 weeks and then it's just EI for the rest of the mat leave.

If you receive EI this summer, I am assuming that you can still apply for mat leave from your board if you are working for them for the x-number of hours.

Please let me know if I can help you more...I'm not sure I've answered all your questions!

I'm not a teacher but I am on Mat. Leave in Ontario. I'm pretty sure it's calculated just like regular EI, based on your top 14 weeks.

As for being on EI this summer and then collecting mat leave after that, I'm not sure. But if I was pregnant again right after my mat leave end I would only have to return to my job for 600 hours. It's about 4 months of full time work.

You can always call Service Ontario and ask them :)

Hello Bees, I'm not sure where to put this post, hope it's ok.

Hoping to find a fellow teacher on these boards, specifically for Ontario, Canada.
I have been looking up mat leave on line and it's confusing. Hoping to find someone who's gone through it.

I know about the 600 hours, but I'm not sure how the payment is calculated from those hours, top 5 weeks? 10 weeks? (I'm on the OT list) I've heard different things. Also, if I were to collect EI this summer would I be able to apply for mat leave before next summer? (assuming we get PG within the next couple months :))

Thanks for your help!

***Update***
We just concluded our eval with EI. Both of my boys qualify for speech/feeding/communication services. We will start off next week. It went well I was stressed out but the ladies were so nice!!! Dh and I need to discuss if we want in home services or if we want to do OT therapy at either hospital. I did like the therapist that came today, she is available thru EI or the hospital therapy. Overall I am feeling good. Thank you for all the support.

@MrsRcCar: we are going thru a similar thing with A. At our last follow-up with the NICU they suggested getting A evaluated - not so much because she's showing delays, but they don't want her to get behind, and also because of her feeding issues. Dh thinks that it means there is something "wrong" with her if we do it, but I'd honestly welcome some PT for her and it would give me a better sense of where she is developmentally. We are getting our evaluation next week. Have you set anything up yet?

@MrsRcCar: I think for a lot of people, the acceptance of services is the admission that something is less than perfect. It's like your perfect child/grandchild isn't so perfect anymore, and it can be a tough thing to accept.

@looch: I am sure that FIL will be more then supportive. Even if he thinks our parenting is a little weird or not his style he supports us unconditional. I think my folks are similar to your MIL, but I am not sure why because we discussed at length our plan to home school. (Which is something they think is wonderful) I hear a lot how I am overreacting to things with the boys for example: both boys are RF in the car, replaced car seats after our accident, still ebf E at 9 months, etc.

@MrsRcCar: I meant to reply to you last night, I can totally understand family being hesitant to explore services. My MIL was like that when I had my son evaluated at the age of 18 months. I asked her why she was so hesitant about it and she basically said that the reason was because the diagnosis "follows" the child through school and she was worried that he would be treated differently. But in our case, it did not matter because our son wasn't going to be in that particular school system (we moved).

Now, my SILs kids could absolutely use services, but they don't get them because of this reason. It's unfortunate.

@Sweet T: My family tends to be pretty laid back in terms of kids will do it when they are ready. Mind you my brother didn't talk until he was 4 (!!) . I love being around my family but sometimes they make me crazy.
@MrsMccarthy: I am hoping after the evaluation I will have a better handle on things for him. Dh and I agree getting help early will be key and we don't want to wait much longer. When E was in the NICU they told us that he would likely need EI services and it isn't uncommon in preemies. My parents are just a whole different generation in terms of parenting. I am pretty laid back most of the time (or at least I like to think I am) but something's are just too important to let slip by.

My only regret is not getting my son services sooner. The strides he has made are incredible and EI would never hurt a child but can make all the difference especially at the ages when brain development is so rapid. I say go for it and let your family flip out if they must. Explain to them that this is just a precautionary thing and not a diagnosis of anything. Just helping him catch up at a crucial time.

We had our first meeting for EI yesterday. DS2 is 14 months old, ~12 months adjusted. His development is similar to that of a 6 month old.

We don't live near family, so they don't really get to have any input, but when I told my parents, both said "well, he's a preemie." I don't know why other generations seem to have a negative view of EI, but we didn't even question it. Do what's best for your family! I'm sorry you're getting grief from others! :(
