@PinkElephant: The alarm is still on its way..... I am really into the book I picked up from my friend though, it is really great so far! There are 2 sections, part 1 for the parents and part 2 for the child. I am almost finishing the parent's part, and will read the child's part together with DS together (we already read a little bit). In a way I am hoping we get to magically gain some ground with just the book and hopefully we don't have to resort to the alarm. So far from the book and the link @kiddosc: posted, the experts didn't oppose to the use of an alarm. So we shall see.

Both the book and the link suggested to stop wearing any pull ups but instead, enhance the protection on the bed. That part I am still a little reluctant to try... Especially in the winter I will go mental to wash the big blankets every day (or spend a fortune to buy all these fancy things to wrap around everything)! Yikes....

@Becky: @Purpledaisy: @looch: Thank you so much! Sorry I have been overwhelmed over the weekend to write a response -- I am doing the "book" approach first. I picked up this book from a friend over the weekend and it's been really helpful to get affirmation on the directions a parent should take when it comes to supporting your child to end night time wetting. Then the picture book section for the child we are both learning new things about our body. We haven't finished it yet, but I will give the book a few weeks first before breaking into the alarm. Wish me luck!

@irene: Thanks for sharing all this. Agreed, please keep this post updated - I'm curious to see how the alarm goes for a very deep sleeper like your son (and my LO). I'm currently not super interested in trying an alarm (besides everything everyone has said on this post, it seems like a lot of work, haha), but might get motivated if I see it working in a productive way for another kiddo. :)

The only thing I would do is to decide when I would back off. If you see no improvement after some time period, that kind of thing.

I also understand completely, it is hard to sit back and continue to wait it out.

@irene: I can totally see how my post would come off as judgy and I am very sorry. Based on your posts after mine I really don't see an issue with trying out the alarm. I think that since your son is asking to be woken up and that he has no shame associated with bed wetting that it might help him. It is definitely worth a try. I just would re-evaluate as I went and make sure that I thought that it was actually helping and that he wasn't forming shame or embarrassment around the issue, which it sounds like you have that covered

@irene: I checked this out after first reading the post and was really surprised to see that there were a lot of positive reviews. Maybefor someone like your son who might just be sleeping super heavily it wouldn’t be so associated with being embarrassed. I think at least for me there were other things tied to it like nightmares, stressors (my dad was very strict), and also I have super high fluid needs and it was just this stressful cycle. I should have looked into it before asking. I hope you guys find a solution soon!

@lauras369: Thank you -- I am not "set" on the alarm, it is just the pediatrician gave me the name, I already ordered it and hey, let's give it a try, that's all :-) You are right , it may not work, but then we will never know if we don't try. You brought up a very good point and I truly thank you for it, that's why I will make sure I ask DS how he feels after we start trying (the thing will ship to us in 2-8 days). Right now he's asking me to randomly wake him up to go to pee, which I won't because that's pointless and it was not effective (sometimes I went into his room and accidentally wake him, and I'd ask if he wants to go to the bathroom which he always say no and go right back to sleep). While you are right that the waking needs to go before the "act" not after, but unfortunately that's the best we can do without surgically implant a chip in his brain LOL (I am kidding). So we shall see and hopefully DS is not too sensitive. I asked him how he feels when he has a wet pull up, he was like what do you mean? so I am guessing he is not ashamed yet.... but I will make sure I follow up closely with him.

ETA: Let's hope the $156 price tag has a not so alarming way of waking the child......

@irene it seems like you are pretty set on the alarm, but I thought I would just bring up one last point, which I believe to be a flaw in the logic of these alarms and why I believe they didn’t work for me as a kid. You said, “theoretically, it supposed to teach them to associate the feeling of needing to pee and the action of waking up and going to the bathroom”

Rather, I think it teaches kids to associate the act of already wetting with a loud/scary/etc alarm. The root problem is sleeping so deeply that one does not wake up to pee. If the alarm could sound *right before* the wetting, that night help to associate the need to pee with waking, but it doesn’t go off until you are already peeing. So, the kid ends up peeing while simultaneously feeling scared/ashamed.

@kiddosc: Thank you for the link - I will take a look.

@Becky: From the brief things I've read, there is a flat sensor that will go under the sheet or clip on your pull up / underwear. It will detect any wetness and when it is wet, the alarm will go off with vibration. The child is encouraged to get up and go to the bathroom even if they are already peeing in the bed. Theoretically, it supposed to teach them to associate the feeling of needing to pee and the action of waking up and going to the bathroom. The expensive one I got claims that the training will be successful in around 3 weeks.

@Purpledaisy: Yes, he was going to bed in underwear just last summer. He was having consecutive dry nights and we were quite excited. He went to underwear and I thought that was it! But then it just reverted back to wetness every to every other night. I thought it has to go through a few of these ups and downs before we are truly done, but then it hasn't come back to the consecutive dryness since.

To all, please refrain your judgement, please understand that I have been adopting the "wait for the magical enzyme" approach for the past 6+ years. I have read and agreed to the same studies you read, and I was in your camp of "wait for the enzyme". Please allow me to try something different and see how that goes. Again I will try my best to make sure he doesn't feel terrible or shameful, but you gotta let me give it a try. It hurts my feelings too with your judgement lol  . I am so sorry that this possibly offended some of you. I hope you can send us well wishes and thank you so much for your understanding...

Have you tried letting him sleep with regular underwear and seeing what happens? My DD was still waking up with a wet pull up pretty much everyday and she wanted to wear underwear to bed around 4ish. She had maybe 3 accidents over the next couple of weeks while she was getting used to having to get up and go to the bathroom during the night.

I wouldn't do an alarm. Like PP have said, I feel that it will create shame around it. I've heard that especially boys can have a hard time with bed wetting well into elementary school, I'd just relax and give him more time.

I was a late bed wetter. I remember the last time I wet the bed, which was when I was 8. I didn’t do it every night and didn’t have to wear pull ups, but my husband and his siblings were all in pull ups until at least 5-6 I think.

Can I ask what the logic behind the alarm is? I was so ashamed to wet the bed and would try to hide the sheets so no one would know (even though my parents didn’t make a big deal), and going back into my head at that time an alarm would have just been heartbreaking ☹️

@irene: If he is still producing enough urine overnight to soak through a pull-up and drench his sheets, then he isn't producing enough ADH to reduce the amount of urine his body produces at night. I think you'll find that you're going to have trouble training him when his body is requiring him to empty his bladder multiple times a night.

I was just doing some research on this for another mom on a facebook group I'm a part of and found this link to have some good information. http://www.bladderbowel.gov.au/assets/doc/drynight.html

Thank you so much for chiming in! I appreciate it.

@oskarsmommy: @lauras369: Thank you for sharing your experience -- because obviously no reviews ask the users / children how they felt about it. Hmm. Good point to note.. I will be sensitive and gentle and make sure I ask if he feels OK with it when we are using it.

@KT326: My pediatrician was like yours last x years. Every year I brought up the bedwetting issue, and he said as long as he is under 7-8 years old we are fine. This time we are 6+ and I mentioned it again at the well check up, and he gave me the name of the brand. So I just want to give it a go.

@PinkElephant: DS is also an insanely deep sleeper. He wore a pull up and he managed to still pee his sheets and his blankets AND he slept through it, without even knowing his bed was wet in the morning! He said he got up last night for 2 times to pee, but he still wet his pull up this morning.

ETA: I should also add that DS was more into going to sleep with an underwear when he was younger, maybe 3. We did give it a try and there was several times he has several nights of dryness. But then it went downhill and we went back to pull up. It was up and down for the past 3 years. Now I think even he forgot that it was something we supposed to strive for. He knows he should be dry and he is proud of himself if he were dry one morning, I am not sure how intensely he care about it.

I just paid $156 for that most expensive one, so we'll see. I am also picking up a book from a friend this weekend on night training, she said there is a portion for the parent to read, and then a portion for the kid . She said it helped them. She was the one who recommended me the baby whisperer book which saved my life when DS was a newborn, so I am going to give that a try too and see how it goes.... wish me luck.... And no, no offense taken. I've been doing the wait it out "strategy" for years wondering if I should step up, and I really want to give it a try before throwing in the towel to wait again....

I posted about nighttime bedwetting with my 6 yr old a month or two ago as well. We haven’t pulled the trigger on an alarm yet because she’s starting to have dry nights, with maybe one wet night once every two weeks or so. I had done some research on the alarms though, and my sense was that one big difference between the cheaper and more expensive brands was how easy they are to clean/set up again in the middle of the night if it goes off. Another difference might be he modes it has (vibration in addition to sound, etc.), and whether there are cords/wires all over. Sensitivity is probably another difference - how wet it has to be before it sounds.
It seemed like there was a significant difference in features and reviews between the more expensive and cheaper brands, but I haven’t tried any of them yet, so can’t speak from personal experience.

@irene: Following b/c I have a child who will be six this summer and still wears a pull-up/wakes up wet every morning. I was curious to see what people who had alarm experience would say, because I have also been wondering whether I need to be considering helping my daughter "try harder" at being dry overnight. She is an insanely deep sleeper, which I've always been thankful for - I'd never wish that away for the sake of ditching pull-ups.

So my question to you would probably be this: Does your son WANT to be dry overnight? Does it bother him that he wears a pull-up? If so, an alarm might be helpful. If not, I'd imagine it'd be frustrating or shaming, the way others have said they felt, or, that he might just learn to ignore it. My child is not particularly interested in ditching her pull-up; she has a good friend who wears one too, and they seem to have found solidarity in it. She's resistant to me telling her she can't drink water before bed, and to the idea of me helping her wake up at night to train her body to wake to go pee. She just isn't motivated yet. I'm pretty sure if I used an alarm with her, she'd ignore it, or learn how to turn it off before rolling over and going back to sleep (without really ever waking up).

ETA: I'm not trying to imply that using an alarm would be mean, so please don't be offended...I'm just wondering aloud how effective it will be if your child isn't interested.

Like the first poster, my parents got me one of these alarms when I was around 8/9. I still have very clear memories of how embarrassed and ashamed it made me feel. It didn’t help either - the alarm would go off scaring me and awaking the whole house. I felt embarrassed that my parents and siblings would know when I wet. My personal belief having been an extended bedwetter is that some kids just sleep more deeply and take time to grow out of it. I’m 36 Now and haven’t wet the bed since I was about 10-12. I’d rather my parents had just gotten me some kind of pull up rather than try to shame me or train me like
Some kind of animal. My 2 cents 😊

My son is going to be 6 next month and we were just at the pediatrician for something else. I asked about night time training because his pull up is still wet when he wakes up. She said some kids just take longer and she isn’t worried about it. So we will keep him in pull ups for now. She also told us they have to secrete an enzyme that makes them create less urine overnight and also they need to be able to wake up on their own to go.

I should also note that DH had bedwetting issues too until 8-9 so another reason I’m not stressing about it.

ETA: I know my response doesn’t help for the alarms, but I just wanted to let you know we are in the same boat with bedwetting.

I can't comment on the brand, but I had an alarm growing up (I bedwet for a long time - until maybe 9?) and I hated it. I clearly remember the dreadful feeling when the alarm would wake me (and my brother) up in the middle of the night. Like alarm, then instant feeling of shame and failure.. Maybe that was because it was a bit more taboo (I'm 40 - this was a long time ago) but I eventually outgrew it, and I think I'd have rather discreetly worn pull ups until it stopped..

I know nothing about bedwetting other then my experience, so I apologize if these alarms are what is recommended - just wanted to share my experience..

Anyone have any experience with Night Time Bedwetting Enyresis Alarm? Any recommended brands and stories to share?

DS just turned 6 and we were at the well check out at the pediatrician's. I told him that he is still consistently wetting his pull up every or every other night. He recommended us to purchase an Enyresis Alarm, and recommended the NightHawk brand.

I googled -- while there are several different bedwetting alarms on amazon that is around 25-50 USD, the NightHawk bedwetting alarm is $156 ?! So I am curious to know if anyone has experience with it, and if there are different technology to justify that big $ difference. Or if the cheap one work just fine. And any other suggestions on night time "training"?
