I had an episiotomy took pain meds for 3 weeks+, but I drove and walked around at 1.5/2 weeks pp no problem. I also had a gland swelling that caused me to see the ob at 3 weeks and he said aside from that gland, I was healing really well.

I do remember having trouble walking up and down a lot longer than my friend who only had a small tear, but overall I was really grateful for the recovery. TAKE A BATH EVERY NIGHT, I did it nightly and i SWEAR it's what helped me. I know some docs say no full baths, but I LOVED IT. and it worked for me.

we DTD at 6 weeks, had to stop because it hurt, but then a few days later it was fine :) and now it's mostly back to normal (aside from being tired to do it! LOL)... i get numbness and sometimes a random pang of pain on the scar sometimes, but overall -- i've had a great recovery!

@lavender: that's how I feel most of the time. If I make any sudden movements I'm in tears! My doc gave me T3's out of the hospital, but they were gone the first week so I haven't had anything stronger than Advil. :(

@Mrsjets: ugh! I'm sorry you went through that, your recovery time sounds totally depressing!

@rachiecakes: this is how I'm feeling. People keep telling me I look great and I kind of just want to yell at them to take a look at my vag! I want to feel good and be able to do normal things again. Like sit in a car.

@FutureMrsMcK: I've totally started having Epsom salt baths every day last week. They are amazing! It's definitely temporary relief but ill take any relief I can get at this point.

@mrsmenow: I'm not even being super active. I've gone, with DH, to the store a couple times, but mostly I just lay about on the couch! I feel totally useless!

Thanks so much for your replies. The recovery time is completely depressing and I totally bawled my eyes out yesterday after reading some of your recovery times. Especially about DTD. I had so many issues with sex per pregnancy, and I had finally got it all sorted just before I got pregnant and now I feel liked have to go through all that again but just different. :(

@matador84: I was the same with my first-episiotomy and huge tear.

The things that helped the most: sitz baths, witch hazel padcicles, dermaplast, and using the spray bottle every single time I went to the bath room so you only pat dry. My recovery didn't take that long though.

I would try to see if not being so active would help with your pain, and if not give your doctors office a call and see what they think. I hope you are feeling better quickly!

I had an episiotomy and third tear--about 30 stitches. I took at least 3 baths a day. Pads with tucks, hydrocortisone and dermaplast really helped me heal also. i only wiped with pampers wipes and that helped as well.

@.twist.: I'm sorry sweets. I remember being in near-tear pain for a few week (I had an episiotomy and a second-degree tear on top of it.) and uncomfortable for maybe 6 weeks? Mine didn't heal for closer to 8 weeks. At around 3 wks pp my midwife okayed me to take warm bath every night. She told me to sit on a folded up towel/hand towel in the warmest water I could for 15-20 minutes at a time (no longer than half an hour--in a clean bathtub, since infection could be a concern. I made DH clean it.) I hated the sitz bath but sitting in a regular bath felt awesome.

I'd say if you're still in a lot of whole lot of pain you should call your provider, though.

@.twist.: :( I was so depressed over the pain, too - I felt like everyone I'd ever known to have given birth was up and working out and it took me months before I wasn't in pain. TBH, it still has weird/numb sensation at the scar sometimes - 19 months postpartum.

I didn't have an episiotomy but I had a 3rd degree tear and it hurt to even move an inch for almost 4 weeks. The first 2 weeks I needed help getting up and going to the bathroom. I'm not really sure what's normal and what's not but that was my experience.

I had a 3rd degree lateral episiotomy that took forever to heal. My body rejected the gazillion stitches which didn't help. It took at least 6 weeks for the swelling/constant pain to slow and then another few months before it felt ok to attempt to DTD. Even then it wasn't fun. At about 9 months PP I felt like it was almost back to normal and now at 14 months it's 99%. I hope you heal much faster!

I was in pain for a good 4 weeks after mine. I was taking RX strength Motrin and took it every 4 (or was it 6 hrs?- whatever the bottle told me to do) religiously. To be honest it totally sucked and if I moved really fast or jolted up, I would be in tears from the pain.

Ouch! Poor thing! I had an episiotomy, but I don't remember the pain lasting that long. It was uncomfortable for about a month I would say, but not bring me to tears pain. Have you tried "padsicles?" I found them on Pinterest and made like 20 before I gave birth. You take a pad, add aloe, witch hazel, and a little lavender, wrap them in aluminum foil and freeze them. They helped so much when I was uncomfortable. Hope you get to feeling better!

I had an episiotomy delivering my son about 2 weeks ago. I'm still in a lot of pain.

For those of you who had an episiotomy, how long before the pain was gone? At 3 weeks did the pain still bring you to tears?

I am on a 4 hour rotation of Advil and then Tylenol, and I don't feel a hell of a lot better with either and I'm starting to worry about the effects on my body from taking these so long.

The pain is putting me in a depression and I'm finding it hard to want to do anything. Even finding the energy to move on the couch for a feeding is a painful tedious task.

Is this normal? Do I need stronger pain killers? Am I right near the point of feeling better?
