As far as I know there has never been an incident of a child breaking their leg while in a rear facing convertible carseat. However there have been incidents of forward facing children breaking their legs when their feet fly forward/upward and hit the seat in front of them. I know someone who rear faced her children until they were over 3 years, and they figured out where to put their feet and never complained about being uncomfortable even when asked.

DS is 20 months old and is in the 97% for height and weight. He already weighs 36 pounds. Our difficulty is being careful not to bump his head when we get him in and out of our sedans, but he still seems content. He either bends props his legs on the seat back, or puts them in a semi-indian style position.

I almost flipped his seat around about a month ago when he was fighting me to get in and hit his head on the door frame. We were both tired and frustrated and it seemed like the easy answer. But he is SO MUCH SAFER rear facing, that I talked myself out of it. We are going to wait until he hits 40 pounds before we switch him.

It's not until a child is between 3 and 5 years old that the bones in their spinal column start to fuse, so keeping toddlers rear facing as long as possible is really the safest.

There are some things I am willing to sacrifice, like watching TV. AAP recommends no TV until the age of 2.

But staying Rear Facing is FIVE TIMES safer for them. That is a huge decrease in risk for injury.

We're going to aim for 2. He's tall and at 17 months his legs are already scrunched. DH is starting to bug me about it, but I keep saying that he seems comfy enough and it's safer.

Our convertible goes RF until 40 lbs. I am hoping to make it until at least two RFing if not longer.

She has gotten a bit lonely back there but snacks help.

We turned Lo forward facing after she turned 1. She's almost 21 months now.
The recommendation is until 2 years though!

LO is 90th percentile in height and weight. She's 17 months and still rear facing. She doesn't complain yet so we don't want to turn her. If she does start complaining before she turns two, we're going to call her doctor and ask their opinion. Since she's such a big girl I do wonder if it would be ok to turn her before age 2..... but I'd still rather keep her rear as long as possible.

I was told it's better they break their legs than other injuries that can occur if they are forward facing too soon. We plan on keeping her rear facing as long as possible. I hear the new recommendation is 2 years. We probably won't make it that long though.

We will rearface until our LO outgrows her seat rearfacing by weight or height. If they have to bend their legs it is not a big deal, they are still so much safer rearfacing as long as possible.

How long will you keep your convertible seat rear facing? I planned to keep it that way for as long as possible but my 8 month old already had her legs sticking out.
@Weagle: @Thehistoryofus: mentioned in the other thread that its normal for legs to stick out, but then I guess in no time she will run out of space?
