@mrs. wagon: That's what I figured about the doula... Since we don't want family in there, I'd need another support system if DH can't make it through.

@artbee: He's going to stay away from the hoo-ha area anyway... He said that what bothered him during the video was the separation of the muscles during a c-section. But in general, he's terrible with blood - even his own. No baby catching for DH! lol he even has to lay down if he thinks about what blood pressure actually is! And he married a nurse! haha

@jennylynn: I'm glad to hear that DH was able to stay in the room with you. Was he able to offer support or was he unable to do that?

@Zuzu2and11: That is awesome to hear! I hope I can have a positive experience like your friend!

@mrbee: I'm glad you made it through ok. DH gets a picture/idea in his head and his mind just harps on it! Now that the scene from the c-section animation is stuck in his mind, if anyone even mentions one, that's where his mind will go!

I was hoping to have a mirror at delivery because I really do think it's awesome to see... we will definitely have to angle it away from DH if I can have one! I'm really hoping DH will surprise me and make it through without a hitch, but I need a plan B!

My friend's husband is VERY squeamish...so much so that he fainted during an early ultrasound and during an anatomy class. They were worried about labor so they hired a doula. Great decision for them! She had the unmedicated birth that she wanted, and she attributes it largely to her doula. Her husband was able to be supportive the whole labor though! He played an active and loving role rather than hiding on a corner

My husband is EXTREMEMLY squeamish. Like if I even said the word placenta he's get nauseous. But he made it through the delivery. I made him promise that he'd stay in the room no matter what before I even went into labor because I knew he'd be questioning it when it came time, and I knew he'd regret it if he didn't. I wound up having my mom stay in the room to help coach me because he was an absolute nervous wreck, and unfortunately his mom in the room because he needed some comfort as well. He wasn't able to watch and we actually had to put his chair beside me facing the head of the bed but he stayed in the room, and thats all I wanted.

Wagon Sr. is definitely science-minded (he was pre-med in college but didn't end up pursuing medicine) but he has a history of passing out when he sees his loved ones' blood. Lol. Luckily he did fine and was even able to give me a play-by-play. I think when the moment hits and adrenaline is rushing, it's a whole different story. I'd say hire a doula and see how he does!! If he passes out, you'll have the doula there :)

Mr. S is very squeamish. The baby is just up from his nap right now so I only have a second to write. But hands-down a doula was the absolute best money I have spent in my entire life. I would trade my wedding rings for her, that's how much a difference she made for both of us. Best. Decision. Ever.

I'm hoping our classes will help him out, and I plan on having my mom on standby if need be! I will want someone with me in the delivery room in case he doesnt' think he can do it! I told him he can just hangout up by my head and keep me calm, hopefully that will be okay with him! I really want him there.

@purrpletulips: Yeah, he would be blocked by the drapes and whatnot... but there are smells in the operating room that even I had a hard time with (between the fluids, the cautery, etc). And now that he "knows" what happens, if he thinks about it at all, he needs to lay down! Oye!

@sorrycharlie: I told DH I'll have to desensitize him to the situation, but he's worried about that too! He now sees why I've been concerned about his being in the OR/delivery room. It doesn't help that my hospital requires twin moms to deliver in the OR whether it's a vaginal delivery or c-section just in case. I hope he doesn't have flashbacks to the c-section video if I'm able to have a vaginal delivery!!

oh boy. we watched 'business of being born' and DH said it was like a car wreck. then he realized it was Ricki Lake and FREAKED.

I'd suggest what I'm making my DH do - watch some youtube videos. I'm not sure how they'll do in the situation, though - sometimes they do great (their own wife, child) and sometimes it's worse than they thought BECAUSE it's their own wife, child.

sorry that's not much help..lol

My DH isn't too squeamish but has a needle phobia (of sorts). He did beautifully. We let our L&D nurse know ahead of time and she was fabulous about keeping him out of view of anything and giving him fair warning when needles were going to be involved so he could either look away or step outside the room. He opted not to cut the cord (which was fine by me). I think in a c-section they can pretty much block your view with sterile drapes if you want (no experience though).

DH and I completed our multiples childbirth class yesterday. They reviewed what to expect with each type of birth, and during a video of an ANIMATION of a c-section, DH had to put his head between his knees. The vaginal delivery video wasn't graphic at all - you could barely see anything. I told DH it isn't really like that (two pushes and the baby's out, barely any fluids or anything visible) and he said he'd be fine.

I'm not so sure.

I've witnessed both c-sections and vaginal deliveries during my rotation in L&D in nursing school. I'm not thrilled about the idea of a c-section just based on the idea that it's major surgery and I'm a baby when it comes to stuff like that (lol). I know, though, that I'd make it through just fine with the right amount of support.... but DH won't be able to support me if he's passed out on the floor.

I have looked into a doula, and I'm meeting her this weekend. I don't want family in the delivery room with us. But I want DH to be able to be there for me.

Any success stories with squeamish DHs? Did he pull through just fine or was he breathing into a paper bag during delivery?

Fainted during/after my miscarriage. Haven't fainted once while pregnant and I'm 23 weeks and have had over 20 tubes of blood taken, and two IVs at the ER this past week. Baby's making me tougher?

I'm a fainter. I faint from pain. I remember the first time it happened. I was 12 and fell down the stairs. Since then it has happened maybe 20 other times. One time in high school I was in a school bus and somehow jammed my finghe I fainted and fell into the lap if the guy sitting next to me. Imagine how I felt trying to explain why my face was suddenly in his lap.

I'm terrified to go through labor because of the fainting (and the pain). My husband is advocating a natural birth but I just don't see that happening. Luckily I get the final vote.

I've fainted when having blood drawn, and about 12 other times from my hypoglycemia. Often after international travel, when I'm worn out and starving. Makes me feel like such a wimp though, I've got to get more on top of my blood sugar so I don't have to go through that again - so embarrassing!

Anyone have a history of fainting? I faint (or nearly faint) every time I get blood drawn. In fact, I once fell right off the doctor's table after getting a flu shot and hit my head on the floor. It was mortifying!

It's called Vasovagal Syncope, and lately I've been thinking about how it's going to mess with me once I'm pregnant. Blood draws! Epidural! Pushing! Ugh. Has anyone with a history of fainting been through pregnancy/childbirth? Tell me I'll survive :)
