@ustechie: When you go into labor, your body sends a bunch of sugar to the baby to prepare for delivery. It was that surge of sugar that was sent to the baby in preparation for delivery that overdosed and killed it.

@Navy_Mommy: I'm at the end of my 20th week and I havent heard anything about it yet from my OB. From my research though some midwives dont do the glucose check unless your blood or urine shows up with abnormal levels of sugar

@Rosie Girl: That's terrible! I'm no expert, but I would imagine there were some other underlying factors as well. I guess I just don't understand what you mean by "sugar surge".

@Navy_Mommy: I was told it should be done between 26-30 wks.

@Rosie Girl: Cool, thanks! I'll be almost 26 weeks next time I go in, so I was just amazed she hadn't brought it up yet (and I forgot to bring it up last time I was there).

Random question - when do you get this? I'm 22 weeks and my midwife hasn't even brought it up (and I don't go in for another appointment until the end of December).

If you get a positive on the 1 hour test, and then negative on the 3 hour test, it doesn't indicate that the 1 hour test was a false positive, it just indicated that you are metabolizing sugar more slowly, as opposed to ineffectively.
Even if you get a positive on the 1 hour and negative on the 3 hour, you should still be cautious about glucose intake!
I have seen babies with hypoglycemia at birth from Moms who had a positive 1 hour and negative 3 hour test, because they are used to the Mom taking longer to metabolize sugar and therefore need more sugar (breast milk or formula) in the first days to maintain good blood sugars.

@MrsBrewer I think the OP is referring the blood sugar tests done for gestational diabetes.. and I'm also nervous about this too!

I didn't know you could get a false positive from sugar intake?

I didnt get a false positive the first time, but I am scared of getting a positive this time! I do the test on Tuesday and am freaking out! I think I am actually more scared of getting a false negative.

We had a friend who got a false negative on her test. She went in to have her C-Section and the dr sent her home to wait another day. Well, she went into labor that night and the sugar surge to the baby overdosed it and killed it. That terrifies me. I would rather get a false positive, then a false negative!

So, I picked up my oh-so-yummy-looking glucose drink this morning. I'm nervous about getting a false-positive because I'm afraid my body won't be able to tolerate that much sugar at once. I don't eat very many sweets at all, and I gave up drinking any form of pop over 8 yrs ago...all I drink is water. Did anyone, especially those who eat really healthy, get a false-positive? Or am I way over-thinking??
