1. What state or region do you live in?
Portland, OR

2. Will you/do you see an OBGYN for your pregnancy, a Family Practice Provider who also does obstetrics, or a midwife? Why did you choose that type of provider?
I saw an OBGYN, mainly because I was worried about complications due to my age and a previous (very early) loss.

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider?
He sees a pediatrician because I heard such great things about my provider's pediatricians from other moms I know. I never considered anything else!

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor?
Not usually, especially for routine stuff.

4. I think it depends on what I'm seeing him/her for. If its general care, then I think a nurse practitioner is fine. Anything more complicated (or a specialty), I'd prefer a doctor.

2. Will you/do you see an OBGYN for your pregnancy, a Family Practice Provider who also does obstetrics, or a midwife? Why did you choose that type of provider? OB- I was high risk and wanted optimal interventions and someone who knows ACOG off the top of their head.

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider? Pediatrician- I need a doc that knows at least as much as I do and who can talk a worried pediatrician off the ledge, y' know?

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor? I saw an NP occasionally during PG, but the bulk of my care was OB.

1. NB, Canada
2. OBGYN in a clinic. It's our only option in this small rural town!
3. Baby will see the OBGYN in the clinic for the first few months and then transfer to our family doctor. If there are complications then we get referred to a Pediatrician. Its not so much I chose the option, so much as that's the way things are done here.
4. No, I trust a nurse practitioner as much as our family doctor. Ours is retiring within the next 5 years and I'm considering switching to a nurse practitioner!

1. What state or region do you live in?
DS was born in Georgia. We moved back to Kansas when he was about 4 months old and now we live in Hawaii.

2. Will you/do you see an OBGYN for your pregnancy, a Family Practice Provider who also does obstetrics, or a midwife? Why did you choose that type of provider?

I saw a midwife throughout my pregnancy because I wanted a natural birth and wanted to see some one who would support that decision.

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider?

DS has always seen a pediatrician.

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor?

I prefer to see a doctor. We usually see a nurse for vitals and a doctor for the actual appointment. We've had one appt where we only saw a NP and I didn't like it. She gave old school advice and I didn't really trust her opinions.

OB, I would have stuck with my GP who can also do ob, but I had previously been referred to the OBGYN for an abnormal pap, so at that point it just seemed simpler to stick with him.

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider?

Undecided, we are open to either option, we will go with someone we think is a fit for our family.

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor?

1. New York

2. OBGYN - I started seeing her on the recommendation of a coworker when I moved to this area and kept on going when I got pregnant. Not a whole lot of research or thought went into it to be honest!

3. Pediatrician. She came highly recommended to us, has seen a zillion babies in her time and we had a good gut feel when we went to a prenatal information session. Plus it doesn't hurt that she's about a 40-second walk from our apartment.

4. No, I'd be happy to see a nurse practitioner over a doctor for most things, though I rarely get the chance.

2. I see an OB/GYN, because I had been seeing one for years about my female issues; it made sense to continue with her

3. Family Practice Provider; he was recommended by my boss who takes his whole family there, and I have been going to him. I like the 'one-stop-shop' aspect of it,

4. Not for routine illnesses, cuts, bumps, etc. Both have the skills and knowledge I need for things like that

1
California
2
Obgyn- because my HMO covered it. Also bc I like to see the most specialized dr for what I need. If I had a fam dr I already had a longstanding relationship with and trusted then maybe I'd consider it though.
3
Pedi- because again, they specialize an devote their time to children (which is a big range too but not as big as family practice.)
4
I'd prefer a dr but would have been ok w it for routine stuff. I just never had to think about it an saw a dr every time.

1. Northern New England

2. OBGYN – I’ve seen her for years and trust her and her team. I only was interested in seeing an OB for pregnancy/delivery and the practice I go to is very woman-centered and very open to any type of labor/birth you want (except water birth as it isn’t allowed at the hospital they pair with).

3. Pediatrician – we chose the practice on recommendation of my OB (her kids go there) and a couple friends whose kids also go there. We were randomly matched with our ped and we love him.

4. For routine stuff, no it doesn’t matter to me. For “bigger issues” I want to see my doctor.

1. What state or region do you live in?

Pennsylvania

2. Will you/do you see an OBGYN for your pregnancy, a Family Practice Provider who also does obstetrics, or a midwife? Why did you choose that type of provider?

We alternated between a midwife and a CNP for prenatal care. Our clinic was a satelite clinic for a large, regional hospital. There were two OBs who practiced there but generally only oversaw higher-risk pregnancies. Unfortunately midwives do not have delivery privileges at our hospital of choice, so I was seen/delivered by the OBs on call (both of whom I loved). Had I needed to be induced or have a scheduled c-section I would have seen an OB at our practice and they would have scheduled for a day they'd be on call.

We were ultimately happy with the outcome and very much liked the OBs we saw during L&D but I would have preferred that our midwife deliver (but she couldn't). We went ahead with this route knowing in advance she couldn't because we loved her, got 9 months of prenatal care from her, the clinic was 5 minutes from our house and we wanted to deliver at this particular hospital.

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider?

DS sees a Pediatrician because she came highly recommended and we adore her.

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor?

For everyday things not at all. I've often seen an NP for everyday problems and find them to be just as competent as a doctor. For more serious conditions I feel more comfortable with a doctor (some specialties, or something that might ultimately lead to a surgery, for example). Specifically regarding prenatal care I was 100% satisfied with the care I received from the midwife and CNP.

2. Will you/do you see an OBGYN for your pregnancy, a Family Practice Provider who also does obstetrics, or a midwife? Why did you choose that type of provider?
OBGYN. He has rights at the hospital with the NICU.

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider? Family Practice because we were already set up there and we didn't have any major issues that required special pediatric assistance. Plus our family practice is a husband/wife combo who has 7 kids, so I like to think they know a thing or two about real life pediatrics.

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor? I prefer to see a doctor but wouldn't mind seeing a NP if I got in sooner and was my choice because it was something minor (aka, just shots, needed to call in a med, etc)

1. What state or region do you live in?

Portland, Oregon. And I suspect that you and I graduated from the same college, based on your profile image.

2. Will you/do you see an OBGYN for your pregnancy, a Family Practice Provider who also does obstetrics, or a midwife? Why did you choose that type of provider?

I saw a hospital affiliated midwife for my care, because I favored their model of care. I also appreciated the fact that being affiliated with a hospital meant a seamless integration of more medical care should I need it, and I did. My birth required an induction and eventually an OB consult when things went south. I was very happy with all of my providers and how well and respectfully they worked together.

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider?

We see a family practice doctor, which is great, because I can go see him or anyone in the practice too. For sick visits we just get whoever is free, and then I know if I like them. It's fantastic. My midwife heard that I hadn't picked a ped yet when I was laboring, and she sent around the family practice residents on call to chat me up later. I liked them, so we stuck with them.

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor?

I would be happy to see an NP some of the time, certainly.

1. What state or region do you live in?
NJ

2. Will you/do you see an OBGYN for your pregnancy, a Family Practice Provider who also does obstetrics, or a midwife? Why did you choose that type of provider?

I will see an OB because my medical history is complicated and I want my doctor to be able to integrate every detail with the most up to date medical research. If I want holistic support at my birth, I will have a doula present.

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider?
I'd definitely prefer that my child see a pediatrician, so that he/she can receive the most developmentally appropriate care.

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor? If I had a cold it wouldn't matter, but for most of the things I actually go to a doctor for it matters to me.

1. What state or region do you live in? Vermont

2. Will you/do you see an OBGYN for your pregnancy, a Family Practice Provider who also does obstetrics, or a midwife? Why did you choose that type of provider?

I see a practice the includes OB/GYN MDs and midwives. I chose the practice because of their women-focused treatment and holistic perspectives that support medication-free childbirth. I will continue to see a midwife there for my regular Gyn. care because I like her, and its nice to have that continuity. If things go well with our first childbirth experience, I anticipate planning home births for any subsequent children, and so I would see a midwife (probably my best friend!)

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider?
Baby will see a pediatrician. My husband is beginning his residency for pediatrics, so we have an obvious bias- but I'd rather my child see someone who specializes in children.

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor? For quick, simple visits I wouldn't mind seeing a NP. When I go for annual check-ups, however, I expect to see the doctor for at least part of my visit and that is important to me.

2. Family Practice (I will explain in 3)

. Family Practice- My whole family has seen the same provider for several years. He knows all of us really well. He knows my personality and when I call with something he understands where I am coming from. I think he is a really great provider and trust that if he didn't feel comfortable managing something he would refer us to a specialist. Trust and communication are really important and it is really hard to find. I also really liked their delivery policy- unless they are out of town they deliver their own babies-no on call docs.

4. No

I saw an OBGYN for my first child. That practice is one of the best in the area. I will see a midwife for my next. I'm switching to a midwife just because the office/hospital is closer and they are highly recommended.

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider?

My baby sees a pediatrician. She was our best option. Had we found a better family practice doctor, we would have chosen that route.

Live in FL

Saw OB/GYN. While I wanted a natural birth, I have some medical issues that made my pregnancy high risk, and I wanted the best educated doctor possible.

Baby is seeing a pediatrician. It is important to me that his doctor be more familiar with modern childhood issues.

I am comfortable with a nurse practitioner for routine visits / well visits / basic colds. For diagnostics, I would want me/the baby t see the doctor.

1. What state or region do you live in? South Carolina

2. Will you/do you see an OBGYN for your pregnancy, a Family Practice Provider who also does obstetrics, or a midwife? Why did you choose that type of provider? I go to a midwife at a free standing birth center, outside of a hospital. Looking back on my pregnancy with ds, i felt that i lost a lot of control over it. I wasn't educated about any of it and I kinda blindly followed my OB. When they dropped the ball about my GD, I ended up in labor at 32 weeks. I didn't know how much nutrition could affect my membranes and a lot of other things about pregnancy, that could have been so valuable. Even after I delivered, my drs didn't seem all that concerned that I had delivered so early. So, this time I went with a midwife, at a birth center, cause my #1 goal for a provider was to keep control over everything myself. She gave me lots of valuable information and nutritional education. Since, I'm ending this pregnancy at full term and withOUT gestational diabetes, I feel like it was definitely the right way to go. Plus, my first labor was all natural, so I have no issues with doing that again. OB's are surgeons, and I believe that they should only be handling the higher risk labors.

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider? We go to a pediatrician with ds. I wouldn't mind a family practice, but when ds and I moved back to the area, I just got him into the place that my brother was going to. I don't have the same issues about it as I do with an OB.

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor? Not really.

1. What state or region do you live in?
I live in Kentucky.

2. Will you/do you see an OBGYN for your pregnancy, a Family Practice Provider who also does obstetrics, or a midwife? Why did you choose that type of provider?
I will be seeing a CNM for my pregnancy. I chose this option
because I want a natural birth and to labor at a hospital with
a natural friendly atmosphere. I am crossing state lines to do
this, as the closer hospitals have a higher rate of c-section
and induction.

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider?
I am not sure yet.

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor?
No.

1. texas

2. obgyn, I just thought that was what you did when I was searching for a gyn after college....after many years of seeing her and being comfortable with her, i decided to stick with her for the pregnancy! also, I am not well-researched on other types of care.

3.pediatrician...somewhat like the answer above, I don't know enough about family practice care or how to find / evaluate one in my area. I live in a big city with a strong medical center and you hear much more about ob / pediatrician groups with big hospital affiliations vs. family providers and midwives.

4. sometimes I see a nurse practitioner at my OB's office [my choice if I don't want to wait for my dr. to get back from a delivery, etc.]. I like her and am totally fine with it for "normal" visits. If I was having a major complication I would probably want a doctor...but it might just depend on the NP and situation.

hope that helps !

1. What state or region do you live in?
MA

2. Will you/do you see an OBGYN for your pregnancy, a Family Practice Provider who also does obstetrics, or a midwife? Why did you choose that type of provider?
Midwife practice (in a hospital setting). I chose it because i prefer a more natural unmedicated approach to pregnancy and delivery, with all the benefits of a full hospital at my fingertips (during delivery, but also for things like the ultrasound lab being across the hall from the midwife center).

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider?
Probably a pediatrician, but haven't looked into it much yet.

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor?
No, I am equally as comfortable seeing either.

I work in healthcare and these are some current questions we're grappling with for one of our clinics that I could really use your input on. If you could please answer the following questions I'd really appreciate it:

1. What state or region do you live in?

2. Will you/do you see an OBGYN for your pregnancy, a Family Practice Provider who also does obstetrics, or a midwife? Why did you choose that type of provider?

3. Will your baby see a Pediatrician or a Family Practice Provider when it's born? Why did you choose that type of provider?

4. Does it matter to you if you see a Nurse Practitioner over a Doctor?

Then feel free to comment on anything related if you'd like. Thank you so much!
