@irene: you're not alone! My son didn't walk til 16 months but he was happy to crawl, then walk, until he hit 20 months. Then it had to be me, and only me, who carried him. It lasted a few weeks at its peak then eased off. The only constant with babies is change!!

Eta: and he was 40 inches tall and 36 pounds at that stage!! Lordy, I grew some muscles.

My LO just turned 20 months and we're going through the same thing over here. She's constantly asking me to pick her up when we're at home, but will want to get down when we're out in public because she wants to run around.

We're still in the food throwing and random screaming at the dinner table phase too :P

@Irene: I agree. My DH had to be home with the kids yesterday because our babysitter needed the afternoon off for medical appointments and I had meetings I couldn't miss. It was during nap time and he can work from home but you would have thought I asked him to make some hug sacrifice. It was the first time he was home with the kids since we had DD 3 1/2 years ago. I'm always the one to stay home with them when needed.

@irene: I think him wanting to push the stroller is worse than carrying him! He HAS to be the only one to control it. If I even put my finger on it, he gets into his "I do it! I do it! Don't touch it!" mode. But then he's too small to see where he's going so he's ramming into walls and shelves and sometimes people! We would ditch the stroller except that we have to push my DD in it. We bought a wheeled board for it, hoping he'd like to stand on it while we pushed the stroller. He'll stand on it sometimes but he'd still rather push it. OH! We brought his pull-along wagon (small plastic one) once to the mall (hoping that it'll entice him to walk) and it totally worked! He wanted to pull that thing everywhere. Maybe try that once? But you have to be at a place where you can run back to your car in case he refuses to pull it and you end up stuck carrying him AND a wagon.

@banana: See, pushing the stroller is another thing! Say if we don't bring it, he wants to be carried around. If we brings it (cuz we don't want to carry him), he wants to push it. Either way potentially ends up to somewhat of a meltdown. Ah the mind of a toddler!!!! :)

DD went through this around 18m as well. My understanding is that it is just a phase and they will grow out of it. I'm sorry that your DH has grown cooler towards your LO, my DH got offended when DD would favor me but she swung back to wanting both of us around 2 years old and now I think favors him.

@irene: My son is 3 and STILL wants to be carried! I think he's just lazy though. haha But we can at least bribe him to walk ("If you walk, we'll let you push the stroller!" "If you walk. we'll let you eat your gummy bears!").

@irene: I think we just need to enjoy it while we can - they won't be our "babies" for long, right? (even though it is really annoying sometimes... Here, let me pick you up while I have 5,000 other things in my hands) haha

@Freckles: @BabyBoecksMom: So it's just us 3, and no one else has the same problem lol.

Sometimes I worry if he was sick and if he had a fever that I didn't know about, but just doesn't seem to be it!

Same thing going on over here. The problem for me is that I'm pregnant so I need her to get used to me not being able to carry her. Most of the time, I'll talk to her and explain that mommy can't pick her up. She may cry about it, but after a few minutes, DH will come by and pick her up and she's happy to be held by him. I think, as with everything, it's a phase.

Oh man, i can sympathize. DD is almost 17 months and won't walk down the stairs anymore. I walk down a few steps to the landing and she's still at the top with her arms outstretched. WTH?? She also won't walk to the car or anywhere else when we're outside! She used to love walking/running and now she just wants me to carry her around.

We seem to be at another hurdle at 18-19 months! (I shouldn't complain too much because this is a mild one compared to the sleep problems, throwing food problems...etc. we had!)

LO used to love to walk everywhere and won't even let us hold him. That had been the case since he was able to walk at 11.5 months. We used to be pretty proud that he is such an independent little boy. However recently, I am not sure what happened, he just wants to be held / carried around. When we were outside, he'd reach his arms up and wants me to carry him (which I don't really want to because I am tired, and he's not that light anymore!). If you don't carry him and try to walk quickly holding his hands, he'd try to run in front of you, block you, and continue to hold up his hands wanting to be held (while crying and may get to screaming). There are times I'd give him to DH (as you would give a "heavy bag" to the guy to carry, right?), but LO would struggle and wants to be carried by me. Me only. What????? Why?!!!

While it is very sweet (that he prefers mommy) it is also pretty annoying. Ahh! I also don't like this new behavior because since LO had grown out of the baby stage and is a lot more fun to be around with, DH's attitude changed and he plays a lot more with LO. Now that he prefers mommy more, DH got a bit cooler toward LO again.... argh!!
