@ohapostrophe: Good point, he won't get used to the solids for a while so we can hold off. I won't worry about daycare until we're up to 2/3 meals a day and even then, might just send spoon fed types. My daycare tends to be pretty flexible so I hope they're okay with doing baby led amounts!

@MamaCate: My MIL tried to get me to give him cereal at 3 months!! I don't see why/what the benefit is? I see it more of a filler than anything. Why not start with fruits/veggies?! Which is what I plan to do. :)

@Mrs. Superhero: I'm hoping Noah (my LO) catches on quickly and we can show those nay-sayers! Hahaha ;)

I'm a big not fan of rice cereal, I can't see how it benefits a baby to give them something that fills them up but has almost no nutritional value!

Everyone thought we were insane when we tried to explain BLW, and then they were in awe when they watched her eat :P

I didn't do daycare, but I understand how hard it is to go against what everyone assumes is the only way to do things.

@obxwife: happy to help! again, everyone's experiences are different, but i was in no rush to introduce solids because I agree that there is no data showing the link to improved sleep, and because i wanted LO to get all the benefits of being EBF through the first six months (as recommended by the WHO). Even after she turned 6 mos, we did one meal of solids a day at dinner, and then gradually added a second, so I don't think we started sending food to daycare until she was almost 7 mos.

@obxwife: If I don't want to get into it I just sort of say, "oh, we just kind of skipped purees" or you can blame it on your baby saying he didn't want them ;)
As far as daycare goes, remember that at first you will probably only be giving one solid "meal" a day, then slowly building up to 2, then 3, so you could avoid all solids at daycare for quite awhile if you wanted to. By the time you wanted to send finger foods to daycare he might be 8-9 months, and so they will probably be much more comfortable with feeding him finger foods by then. In the meantime if you do want to do solids at daycare, you could stick with foods that are normally fed from a spoon- oatmeal, yogurt, soups- and emphasize that you want your son to really lead the way on how much he eats. Usually the biggest issue with others feeding our son was that they wanted him to eat a certain amount and would try to coerce/trick him into doing so, and we'd have to really emphasize that we didn't mind if he only had one bite or none... baby led!

@ohapostrophe: It's nice to hear from you guys who have been there! It's tough to explain BLW to someone but in reality, it's not that difficult to grasp.

@brownie: Great! We'll go with the flow and send foods when we're comfortable. :)
@ohapostrophe: Thanks, it's hard because I see other moms doing things differently and it's so easy to question what I decide to do!!

Although people suggest it ALL the time, there have been lots of studies done that show that starting solids (cereal OR BLW) doesn't change a baby's sleeping through the night status. Most babies do start sleeping a bit better around 5-6 months, which is also when most babies start eating solids, but research has shown it's not a causal relationship. We love BLW, but whatever you decide, don't feel pressured by others to do something different than what YOU want to do!

@obxwife: yes, when we knew he was eating it and not choking/gagging we would send it. We provide all his food because of allergies. But you could wait till he's older to do solids at daycare too.

@MamaCate: @brownie: Excellent! Thank you. I think I might start putting him in his high chair during dinner times to include him and introduce a few things to him slowly. He has a weight check next week so if he's not gaining, we'll think about purees. Otherwise - we'll just wait to send solids to school once he's found a few he likes :)

@brownie -- When you mean when he was proficient at a food, and you provided it to the daycare - do you mean BLW foods? I wonder how my daycare will react if I send sticks of green pepper or broccoli for my 5/6 month old!? Haha!

We just did blw at home and he got bottles at daycare. Then when he was proficient at a food we provided that. We ended up supplementing with purees to gain weight.

Our daycare likes to have us introduce all the foods at home first, then send things we already know that LO likes/tolerates. At 5 months, we did lots of finger foods during dinner--broccoli, sticks of bell pepper, cucumber, pieces of banana, etc. LO did a lot of exploring and occasionally swallowed some things so you could try that. She is 7.5 months now and we mostly do purees and she still likes them, even though we continue to do the finger foods sometimes....

@Mrs. Bee: When he's in my lap during dinner, he'll smack at my plate and fuss, I'm curious how he'll do! Trial and error I suppose? ;)

we gave olive some purees in the beginning because her hand control was so poor she couldn't feed herself. but once she had a taste of solids she could chew, she flat out rejected purees. she hates them now!

just something that might happen if your lo loves chewing real food as much as olive. :)

My LO will be 5 months old next week and has slept through the night pretty much since birth. Well, the last 2 or 3 nights he has been getting up every 3 hours and won't go back to sleep unless he nurses. He's NEVER done this! I chock it up to a growth spurt... perhaps?

Well, long story short, I addressed this to his day care and 2 separate teachers suggested giving him rice cereal. I was hoping to avoid all purees and cereals and do baby led weaning instead.

Have any other daycare moms done BLW? I'm curious how/when to start and what to tell his daycare. How involved should they be?

Any BLW advice would be great!! Thanks! :D
