night 2 took almost an hour to get her asleep, but i didn't have to do a single check all night! she woke up around 1:30am and cried for about 30 seconds then fell asleep again, then woke again around 3am and did the same thing. She ended up sleeping until 7am this morning!

Last night was night 1 of sleep training and it took half an hour to get her to sleep in her crib. She then slept until 12:30am and I did timed checks. Four 5 minute checks, three 7 minute checks and one 10 minute check before she finally fell asleep at 2:15am. She then slept until 7:30am. Hopefully tonight is a lot better because she full on screamed covered in snot for the whole hour and 45 mins. I'll report back with how night 2 goes tonight.

I would say consistency is key. We co-slept & nursed to sleep up until LO was 15 months old. At that time, we started putting her to sleep in her room but would keep our regular routine of bedtime stories. Some nights were so bad that I crawled into her crib with her to get her to sleep in her room. We decided that DH would put her to sleep so she wouldn't cry to nurse & it actually helped significantly. LO is 17 months old now and no longer screams when I leave the room after bedtime stories. She will give me a hug & a kiss, tell me "night night" & go to her spot in bed & DH will stay with her until she falls asleep which is generally in about 10 minutes. It was very difficult in the beginning but since we were like clockwork when it came to our new bedtime routine, LO now knows and anticipates what our routine is for nighttime. Good luck! :goodluck:

When did you last try it? We haven't sleep trained yet but last night LO was being difficult so we left him. He was asleep within 10 mins. I think now he's over a year old he understands he's not been abandoned and he does have some settling skills so it might be easier than if we tried when he was younger. He does have a dummy though.

my daughter is just over 13 months and is impossible to put to bed and sleep through the night. we try to get her in bed by 7:15 but without fail it always takes at least an hour with at least 3 attempts of putting her in her crib. She always ends up screaming and fighting it until we pick her back up again. this goes on several times until she either falls asleep in our arms or she settles down enough in her crib and we have to rub her back for like 20 mins. and of course as soon as we lift a hand off her back she wakes up and cries. I'm all for CIO except the few times we've tried it she gets so worked up that she makes herself throw up after about 3-5 minutes. My husband and i agreed to start hardcore sleep training her again tonight, and as i write this he is still up in her room holding her half an hour later as she fusses and her first attempt in the crib was at 7pm.

Has anyone else had a 1 year old that was awful at sleeping that somehow got it fixed? i NEED sleep.

Also worth noting that she did sleep through the night for a few weeks when she was 9 months old, but since then its been a battle at bedtime plus 3 wake ups that take a good hour or two to get her back to sleep. Not ideal when we both have to get up by 6:30am for work everyday. Ugn, I'm SO tired.

@Jess1483: So was it 20 minutes of hard crying the whole time? I am going through this with rolling at the moment and we haven't figured out if we should flip him back or just let him be. But he gets so pissed! He doesn't roll well during the day either so I think he's genuinely stuck, but I also don't want to keep having to flip him back!

We are sort of going through this now. We had already sleep trained though so she was doing fine. Then a few days ago she figured out how to sit up in her crib. Rough couple of days but we have not gone in to lay her down beyond our normal timed checks. The first night she cried for like almost 20 minutes (5 min check and laid down, 10 min check and laid down, cried another 5-ish min) and then passed out sitting up and face planted lol. She slept face down ass up for like 2 hrs before she flopped over. Didn't look comfy to me but she seemed okay and it's gotten better every bedtime/nap since.

@Jess1483: that's a great idea! We will try that. She started cruising in the past few weeks, and I think this newfound mobility is possibly why she's so reluctant to lie down. I am sure this is one of the worst times we could try sleep training, but we're just at a point where the 2-3 hour bedtime routine with multiple wake ups won't fly anymore. On a sidebar: why are babies so obsessed with remotes and phones?! If we let her, she'd chew on our Apple TV remote all day!

@spaniellove oh I never thought of that! The thing is, once she got herself down (finally) last night, she slept for 10 hours straight! And she lays on the changing table happily. That is a good tip, though. I will keep an eye on her and see if she's funny about laying down.

@britcomfan: Also, lots and lots of daytime practice at getting down from sitting. Sit her up, then entice her (my cell phone or the TV remote always worked best) to get down. Do it as often as possible until she gets good at it (which will happen sooner than later).

When my little guy was pulling to stand, we happened to have a pediatrician appointment. She said under no circumstances should we go in and help him, or we'd be doing it forever. She was right--20 minutes and he figured out how to get himself down.
I imagine this is similar, although I've also heard of parents who will wait until baby is asleep (sitting up), then go in and lay them down. But it sounds like maybe that didn't work for you…
Also, hugs. Sleep training is so hard, but worth it on the other end.

We are attempting to sleep train our almost 9 month old. It has become near impossible to get her to sleep (I have nursed her up to 2 hours straight to help her to sleep, only to have her wake up screaming the minute I lay her down!), and when we finally do, she wakes up 1-2 hours later, throughout the night. Anyways, I hate this whole process, but my husband is amazing and has been handling the checks while I do bedtime. The problem we are facing now is that baby will get herself to sleep (after a loooooong period of crying - 1.5 hours the first night, 1 hour tonight), but then she falls asleep sitting up, and doesn't know how to lay down. She's been sleeping sitting up, waking up intermittently and crying, for an hour and a half now. Anyone else have experience with this? I feel awful. My husband went in to try and help her lay down, but that just woke her up and she popped up like a jack-in-the-box and just stood up, crying. I feel terrible. Any advice? Thanks in advance!

I don't have any advice regarding the paci, but we did sleep train with the Ferber method. By the time we trained, I had him with one arm out already (for about a week), and then took both arms out of the swaddle a few days into training. Maybe you can try that? Also, you said you ditched the swaddle and paci cold turkey with your son, so why not try that with your LO2?
It has only been about a month since we trained, so I guess take what I say with a grain of salt! But bedtime is so much better now that we've trained! It really only took one night of crying (and it was SO hard listening to it!!!) for my LO. For several days after that, he did cry but it wasn't the same type of cry. Now, a month later, he will sometimes cry a little bit and sometimes not at all! I'm always so proud of him when he just goes to bed quietly! :)
I would say that if you decide to train, you must commit and be consistent. It's hard not to want to pick up your baby when they're crying hard, but what I kept telling myself was that if I did pick him up, I basically made him cry for nothing. That helped me to be strong.
Good luck!!

So I need advice/success stories. LO2 turned 6 months yesterday and her sleep is getting worse. I am ready to move her out of my room but she is waking 3-4 x/night to either nurse or have her paci replaced. I am also still swaddling. I tried to ditch the swaddle a month or so ago to no avail. I keep wanting to sleep train but I WOH and have a toddler so it just seems there is never a good time. I need my sleep to function at work and we are "getting by" as is. BUT in the hope for a better tomorrow, I want to train her! With my son, I mini trained--we ditched swaddle, paci and moved him into his own room cold turkey. I did it on a Friday night and by Sunday night he was sleeping. I've tried this with her but she just isn't having it! Please help me commit to the process. Also, would you ditch swaddle and paci at the same time? Tell me your success stories!

When we first trained we used extinction because the checks made things worse and meant we had to start the clock again each time we went in knowing she'd cry for at least that length of time again!

When we have had to re-train we have used checks and that works best now...usually one check after 5 minutes and it doesn't get to another 5 minutes before she's asleep.

Extinction at first, and I believe that's how he taught himself to sleep, but now that he can roll onto his stomach and prefers to sleep that way, if he fusses/cries for more than 10 minutes while going to sleep (pretty unusual, but it does happen still sometimes) then I go in and rub his back until he calms down, then he will fall asleep. I've never had to do it twice. FWIW, we sleep trained while he was still swaddled, which I know isn't recommended, but it worked quickly with us and stuck through the 4 month sleep regression (we did it at 3.5 months).

We did both. At the 4.5 month mark, we did the Ferber method with the checks. I'll admit, we picked her up the first couple of times. The max amount of time she cried before falling asleep was maybe a little over an hour. By the third day, it was only 5 minutes.

At the 9 month mark, we used extinction to wean her off of her 5am feed. It took a little longer, maybe a week?

When we sleep trained the first time (LO was about a year?), we did extinction because checks got her more pissed off. The 2nd night, she cried for 2+ hours :bummed:

When we sleep trained the 2nd time (after her baby brother was born and she was about 2), we did checks-- and she would stop crying after the 3rd check or less! 5, 10, 15 mins is what we did. She seemed to understand us better at this age, so we would go in, pat/hug her (no picking up!), and explain that it was time for her to go to sleep, and that we would play in the morning.

I thought the same thing about my LO but ended up checking the first night anyway. We set limits at 7, 10, and 12 minutes. It somehow made us feel a little better but I don't know if it helped or prolonged the crying, to be honest. Every night since the first, we've never had to check on him because he hasn't met our time limit on crying and it's really just fussing. Some nights he goes down without a peep. It's only been 2 weeks but I'm hopeful he's learned!

Neither - we did a mix of a bit of everything. On wake ups, we set the timer for 30 minutes. If he cried longer than 30 minutes, we did the No Cry Sleep Solution method. Pick up and soothe, then put down. It seemed to work really well!

Extinction was the only thing that worked for our LO. We would go in for checks and he would escalate. You could always start with checks if it makes you more comfortable...but if you're finding that it's not working after the first night, switch and try to stay consistent with whatever you find is working.

I'm thinking about sleep training with the Ferber method, but I'm worried that my LO will get more pissed with the checks. What method did you use and why? Was it successful?

@rolypoly: Thanks for updating this. We are on night three of sleep training (modified CIO with checks and picks up to console). Night one he cried 27 minutes, with one 3:40 am wake up, night two he cried 15 minutes and slept through the night, and then-- just as I was high fiveing myself--last night we had 15 minutes of crying (over 30 minutes) and he woke up twice at 2:40 and 4:40. So I too am hoping this is just nonlinear progress.

Have you considered that your baby may be a "tension releaser" who needs to cry a little bit before falling asleep? I don't know much about it but I have seen a little bit of discussion of tension release versus tension increase in various sleep books (google wasn't much help). The basic idea is that some babies need to cry in order to release cortisol stress hormones in order to really sleep. The fact that he cries for a relatively consistent period followed by a great nights sleep sort of lines up with the idea.

I'll be following along. Good luck, and don't give up
