@Amelieisme: Better safe than sorry, I would think!

ETA: I would think as long as the coals are dying down (no longer sparking) that would be safe, as pp have said!

@Amelieisme: My parents do because they have a wood-burning stove/insert. I would avoid leaving an open hearth burning, though. Also, either way, I would make sure to have chimneys cleaned yearly, since chimney fires are scary!

I was just wondering this a couple of hours ago!! We build a fire like 3 times a year, but I never know what to do with it, exactly. We always soak an outside fire with the hose before going inside for the night, and will go to bed with low burning embers in the fireplace. I wasn't sure if that was the norm.

If there isn't active flames we wwould always kind of spread the coals out flat so the heat isn't building if that makes sense & leave it. By we I mean my parents when I was a kid. It was always fine

For those with a wood burning fireplace,do you let the fire burn out and go to bed? My DH and I do this but I worry it's a fire hazard. My parents would have never done this, but they are pretty extreme risk averse people. DH thinks it's okay to leave it, but it sort of worries me so I was wondering, what is the norm??

Fire safety is something I don't mess around with. I've had to escape from a burning building before, it is no bueno :( Because of that I always keep a pair of shoes next to my bed (I wasn't wearing shoes the first-and hopefully only-time that has happened). Where we live now, it wouldn't be a big deal. We are on the ground floor, and there is the main exit (front door) off the living room and a back exit off the bedroom. The kitchen window is low enough that it would work as an escape as well.

I've never heard of a fire ladder! I like it. My mom always told us go jump out the window. She said a broken leg was better than burning to death.

Actually this just came up during our inspection in the house we are moving into. It was built in 1958 and has the original windows and storm windowS. It's also on a pier and beam which has caused a slight shift and none of the windows open which is a fire code hazard/

Yes. Grab cats and 72 hour kid and run like a mad man. Everything else can be replaced.

When we were growing up we would always have surprise drills. Like we would be at dinner and my parents would say ok you have 5 minutes to get out of the house, go grab everything you would need. And then I would go to my closet ang grab all my hangered items and run... ya now I don't care about clothes so my answer is different lol.

We don't have a plan, but our house is mostly one story. We would jump out of whatever window or door is nearby.

When I lived with my parents, my sister and I were upstairs and both had huge window seats with built in fire escape ladders that our parents made us practice a couple times. We also had a hideout plan for if someone ever broke into our house. They were in top of it :)

Yikes, we really don't have a plan. We have a security system that will alert the fire department if a certain smoke detector is set off, but that's about it. You can also open our second story windows and climb out onto the porch roof, which I guess would be our out until help arrived.

We’re in a first floor condo with fire sprinklers. If a fire ever happened, we wouldn’t have an issue getting out, though I’m pretty sure the sprinklers would kick on long before we had to escape anyway.

@MrsCB: I’ve burned my fair share of things in the kitchen and never had the sprinklers go off. I’m pretty sure ours need direct heat in order to trigger.

We live in a 1-story house, so our plan would be to grab LO and go out the nursery window, which opens up onto the front of the house and cul-de-sac. It's a big window only a foot or so off the ground, easy to open and get out of (we've actually had conversations joking about how LO will have an easy time sneaking out!!)

@.twist.: My house is an attached townhouse, and in my state if you have a certain amount of units together, you have to have them. And no, thank God I've never set them off! OMG that would be horrible. It's actually a huge fear of mine that something will hit them (and and break the little glass tube) and set them off in the entire house, ruining everything. It might even set off our neighbors too, lol.

A house in our neighbourhood burnt down on Saturday night. All 3 of the houses floors were completely engulfed in flames and even though neighbours (and fire fighters looked) tried to get anyone in the house out there was a women (a mother) who was found dead in the basement once the fire was put out.

The article talked about how obviously the fire departments feel terrible about fatalities due to fire because they try to be so diligent about getting anyone and everyone out. They also mentioned trying to educate people on fire escape plans.

We do not have one. There is a ladder under our bed that can be used on our window to get us out if we needed, but we do not have any known "plan".
