It's been a while since I've been there, but it looks like this is normal? (Sorry! I hated that answer, haha!) But hopefully his body will be ready to connect sleep cycles within the next month or so. I found these to be helpful!

Anyone have any tips for helping a 5 month old nap longer? My LO has always taken 45 minute naps and I can't for the life of me figure out how to stretch them longer. I've tried in the crib, in the pack n play, with white noise and black out curtains, and everything I can think of.

For the record, he's not upset when he wakes up - it just hits 45 minutes on the mark and then he's rolling over and looking around or playing with his toes and talking until it's time to eat. And he sleeps through the night, so I know he's capable of sleeping through more than one sleep cycle.

@Zbug: Yeah, I was wondering if there was such a thing as the 5 month sleep regression. Her sleep was crap last month because she was sick, but this week it has been awful.

Thanks all!! So maybe it will get better....or not. We have a good bedtime routine and she goes to sleep fine. It's the staying asleep that's killing me. I guess I will give it some more time and go from there. Or just drink more coffee.

Oh and thanks for making me laugh :)

Our little lady starting having some issues with sleep around 4 months, then things got progressively worse until 6 or 7 months when we just couldn't take it anymore. Then we did some sleep training (don't judge!), which was not initially in my plan, but LO pretty much required it.

@catlady: I had the same first thought! and then cracked up.

It felt like forever, but eventually he came around, and it got better. I barely remember it now at 22 months.

I just read the title of your thread and my first thought was "yes, yes it does." Lol.

Seriously though, we are in the exact same place (same age too). Except we are really, really trying to get her out of the rock n play, so we have been dealing with hourly wakeups in the name of getting her to sleep in the crib. We will likely be sleep training soon. We have tried everything else already, and our LO was not a great sleeper to begin with, so our sleep deficit is just huge. :( Sorry that's no help, just wanted to commiserate.

We had to REsleep train after the 4m regression. We literally had to start over from step 1. The 4m regression was the only 1 LO ever got. Growth spurts and development not even teething bothers him, but the 4m regression from hell did!

I don't know if you've ever read the Babycenter sleep boards, but their sleep training "experts" believe that the 4 month regression doesn't always or even usually improve if you don't have good sleep habits in place (routine, early bedtime, falling sleep without rocking/nursing). Basically 4 months is when they become more alert & start rousing more frequently & they can't fall back asleep on their own without their sleep associations. Just an interesting perspective.

Yeah, mine never did. She was a good sleeper early on, then stopped at five months. Now at two she still doesn't sleep through, most nights.

When people used to tell me that "it gets better" whenever I would be going through a rough patch, I just wanted to scream WHEN?!?!?! Tell me when it gets better. Knowing there is an end date would make it bearable.

Now that I"m on the other side, I can state that it does get better. I really wish I could pin point the exact date for you.

We are just barely coming out the other side of our 4 month regression. It started around 3.5 months, got worse around 5.5 months & we have pretty okay & sometimes good nights now (she will be 6 months tomorrow). She is for sure teething today (crying all day, runny nose etc.) & we've only had 2 nights of awesome sleep since the regression so I hope these teeth pop out quick. I'm sorry you're dealing with it but know that it WILL end. The other side is near & I promise exhaustion won't kill you! Coffee is your friend!

LO was a great sleeper from 3-4 months (1-2 wakeups). She started waking up more at four months, and now at over five months it's worse than ever. I feel like I have a newborn again! She will sometimes go back to sleep with a pacifier, but I often have to nurse her (pretty sure it's primarily comfort nursing). She's still in the rock n play. We tried transitioning her to the crib, but she was up more than every hour. I'm hoping this is just a stage, and we can try crib transition again when she's through it.

Did anyone else have a 5+ month old that slept like crap? Maybe she's teething? I need my good sleeper back! (I am not really looking to sleep train. Just trying to figure out if this is something that I can wait out or if anyone has any ideas.)
