I know it's the norm for everything to go slower than you think it will, especially when you're mostly doing it yourself, but I've never been known for my patience :)

Now that our kitchen reno is finally done (just some minor paint touch-ups to finish) I definitely feel better about things, but I can't wait for the day our bathroom is done!

@regberadaisy - congrats on your LO! So nice that you have another place to live while the renovations are being completed! I'm kind of hoping that whenever I *do* get pregnant that will become the motivation that everyone needs to get serious about finishing at least some of the projects. We shall see!

Yuppers! We were house hunting & TTC at the same time. Wouldn't you know it we found dream home and BFP around the same time!
The whole house was stuck in the 50s so it's pretty much a gut renovation of the whole first floor, paint and flooring throughout.

LO is 6 weeks and we're still not moved in. I can't really stress about it bc my husband is doing 85% of the work himself.

The thing that keeps me going is knowing how much we will love the house when it's all done!

Our saving grace is we can still live in our current home until the new house is done. And we know people in HVAC, plumbing & electrical. Everything else my husband can do without help.

Yes! We bought a fixer upper knowing the kitchen and bathroom both needed gutted, heat/ac needs added to one room, electrical work needs done, we want to add a bathroom, and living room needs a new doorway opened up as well as new flooring and built ins. Things are definitely moving slower than we'd like because we wanted to wait until we sold our old house and paid off my car before diving into anything big and then my dad hurt his back.

Speaking of dads, I understand the flakiness except that my dad is a carpenter/general contractor so we get the free labor and he's an expert and does it for a living. The downside is that we get put at the bottom of the list under the paying customers so we do a little, stop for a few weeks, do a little more, etc. We're certainly thankful for what we can get though because having him do the work saves us a fortune in labor costs.

I don't really have any advice other than to just make do the best you can. Remember things don't have to look perfect to be functional. If you can work in short bursts and keep the space useable it will reduce the stress some.

We bought our house knowing it would be a major fixer-upper, but we love the location and really couldn't afford anything else in the neighborhood. We've had a ton of help from my dad, who is very handy, but his pace is k-i-l-l-i-n-g me. I know I shouldn't complain when it's free labor, but we've been here over two years now and are nowhere near where I thought I would be with the house. He's notorious for promising things and not following through.

We're finally feeling confident enough to take one some projects completely on our own so that we don't have to worry about his flakiness, but it's still super daunting! Up next is the main bathroom, our biggest project yet. It needs to be completely gutted and redone. We'll have some help from my dad - but he's not understanding why we want to map out a timeline for the project (he is the poster child for Adult ADD) and we'll also have some help from my husband's brother-in-law. We'll hire a plumber to do the things we can't (moving pipes and whatnot), but will otherwise be doing everything on our own.

We're also in the midst of TTC #1 and I just want some confidence that our two main projects (bathroom and master bedroom) can be done before a baby arrives, if we do get pregnant soon.

Anyway - just curious if anyone else is dealing with major home renovations! Any tips or advice from those who have lived through it without murdering their spouse or other "helpful" family members? :)
