DD1 sleeps on a floor bed. We coslept till 2, but started napping her in her own room with her floor bed a few months before. Love that we don't have to worry about falling out. For your much younger DS, I think if you keep his room to the bare minimum with nothing much that's unsafe, and always have a monitor or something to watch him, you can for sure try it! I think there is a HB all about this.

Ds1 slept in a for bed until he started walking around the apartment doing things at night.

Ds2 is in a crib, but mostly that was because i didn't want him accessible to ds1.

I really liked the floor bed.

@cake2017: we are on kid #2 with a floor bed. It is just a crib mattress on the floor. We baby proof the room—attached furniture, etc etc. We never did cribs so I can’t compare but I have been happy. My DD (now 6), was in it until she transitioned to a “big kid bed” at 3. DS is 28 months and happy. They both roll off sometimes but have figured out how to get back in without issues.

For DS who is currently in the bed, we have not sleep trained. I nursed him down until he was 2 and I like the transition to the floor bed more than to the pack and play when we travel. Now he lies down and I sit in the rocking chair for a few minutes and then leave.

If you are going to do a floor bed and sleep train, make sure you are comfortable with the idea that the baby very likely will spend some time sleeping on the floor instead of the bed!

We didn't do any sort of sleep training until lo was 23 months. But yes we used the floor bed

@cake2017: we started our son with a crib mattress, but after a few months he started rolling off it in his sleep b/c it was so little. He wasn’t getting hurt, he’d just get cold and wake up. We got a regular twin mattress & he still uses that.for our daughter, we started her on a twin right away and it’s been fine. Our son got a bed frame about the time he was 3 years old (we cut down the legs of an IKEA one so it’s still basically on the floor), but our daughter is still just in the mattress on the ground.

Both my kids use floor beds. My son is 5 years old & we put him in one when he was 15 months. My daughter is 2 years old & we started her at 9 months. Both of them hated their cribs and we co-slept starting from whenever they had their first wake up.
We love it. Their rooms were/are sparse & baby proofed.

@cake2017: I did it because I was ebf and it just seemed easier to lay down with them rather than transfer into a crib. And more economical since a crib is so temporary but these mattresses will eventually just go into whatever bed frame when they're older. My older daughter loooves her bed. They've never had a crib so I can't really compare but we've used a pack n play a couple of times while traveling and that's been fine.

Our little has always slept in a floor bed. Her room was just baby proofed. Worked great for us. That said we would snuggle her until she fell asleep until she was almost 2 and we coslept with her until she was 8 months. At 8 months she started out in the floor bed until she woke up and came to bed with us

Dd sleeps on a floor mat when we travel. I’ve heard of others doing this at home.

My concern is at at that age is safety you would have to baby proof everything... furniture secured to walls, electrical outlets covered, baby gate on door, nothing big or breakable to pull down (like a lamp) etc. Babies are so curious and unsteady when they start walking.

Just thinking of ways baby can get comfortable with sleeping alone. I’ve read about the Montessori Bed which led me to find the “floor bed”. LO doesn’t like the crib at all. I have to wait until he’s asleep and tip toe to lower him into it. He wakes up and we start all over. I’ve CIO before and there wasn’t success there. Now this has all been when he was in our room(crib in our bedroom). Now I am working on him sleeping in his own room alone. I know it will not be overnight but I want him to be comfortable overall. I read that making a bed on the floor has helped babies who resist the crib. Even just taking his mattress and safely setting up a bed... I don’t know. Just trying to read options. I am still working on him and his crib. He’s almost 6 months.

I’d like to hear what people think and their thoughts about this method!?! Thanks!

@Cherrybee: "like"! ;-)

@Mrsbells: though we're generally a shoe-free house, we live in a small terrace, and our hall is long and narrow so our 'mudroom' is in one corner of our dining room, meaning that shoes don't removed until we reach that point, and once we have a pushchair that will also be coming into the house up to the same area... so there's just no way to avoid a bit of 'traffic' in this area :-(
Your tiles look great! And I might look into investing in something like that for LO's nursery (which also has laminate!) but unfortunately we just don't have space downstairs to 'zone' things in that way.

I guess I just have to face facts that I will probably be sweeping and mopping a bit more often in the future! ;-)

We use Bona products.

My dad works in the hardwood floor industry (he is a distributor and supplier for products and machinery to install and maintain floors -- he does not sell lumber) and he is not so secretly unhappy that we chose laminate over hardwood.

With that said, he sells all Bona products and only recommends them for hardwood and laminate floor care. We use the dustmop and mop treatment. I vacuum, dry dust with our duster, then use the wet mop treatment. It's easy and leaves our floors looking wonderful!

OK well first off, I have a long way to go in keeping our floors clean. LO isn't mobile yet but once he is, I really need to step up my floor-cleaning game, what with a dog, cat, and husband who wears his shoes all over the house ;)

But when I do go all out on cleaning the floors, I vacuum first, then Swiffer, then use either Bona or this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/ZEP-32-oz-Hardwood-and-Laminate-Floor-Cleaner-2-Pack-ZUHLF32VP/202563411

with a microfiber mop.

However I'm not sure about the chemicalness of Zep, so I'd like to look into using this or even a homemade cleaner (although I've found that basic water and/or vinegar solutions leave our laminate floors cloudy and not looking clean)
http://www.amazon.com/Better-Life-Simply-Floored-Cleaner/dp/B002AFK8QY/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=GHXX9YDU53TE&coliid=I7A4WQGXEP8VX

I just bought a steam mop last week. Should be here this week, so I haven't used it yet, but I can't wait! We also have some laminate floors. I bought this one from NBD because it has 3 settings: one for hardwoods, one for laminate/vinyl, and one for tile. I got it specially because it has a laminate setting, so I am hoping it works well!

I sweep multiple times a week and get down on my hands and knees once a month to give it a good scrubbing. I do use a steam mop on it and steam it once a week or once every two weeks. I hate our laminate, it's cracking already and it's not even 6 years old.

I bought a vilida (like wet jet but I can put whatever cleaning solution in it that I want). It is quick and easy to use, and has a reusable cloth. Its head is bigger then wet jet which is nice, and can get into corners etc. It works great. I dont have kids, but have 2 big dogs with muddy paws and my husband and I who often have bare feet! I can quickly clean the floor every day if I wanted to, and use whatever cleaning solution I want. I will also sometimes just use a spray bottle with diluted vinegar in it for tough spots or spots that are really dirty!

... how do you keep them clean? By which I mean clean enough you're happy letting your LO crawl around on them?

Our LO is due in September, we have two cats and laminate floor everywhere downstairs at home... what with the dust bunnies and footprints it gets dirty pretty fast, and I'm concerned how I'll ever keep up with keeping the floors clean enough to feel our LO won't catch any nasty bugs from touching the floors :-(

I really want a steam mop, but I heard they can ruin laminate as they're really designed for hardwood floors. Boo hoo.

Any tips ladies?
