I started taking prenatals 3 months before we started TTC. I'm still taking them now, and we're still waiting :(.
But just like last time I will take them all through pregnancy (whenever that happens) and as often as I remember during nursing.)

Yes took them while TTC, pregnant and nursing. Studies have shown taking them in advance of becoming pregnant help decrease risk of spinal cord defects and also has been linked to decreased risk of autism (obviously these are correlations and not causation).

I took them for a few months before we started TTC, then all through pregnancy and nursing. When I stopped nursing and we were taking a break from TTC, I still took a half dose daily just in case (which ended up for the best since it got pregnant by accident). Hopefully my body had built up enough from before.

I took them all through TTC & have continued through bf'ing. It has seemed worth it to ensure I had plenty of folic acid & all other vit/minerals on board throughout the entire process.

You could use this time to find the prenatal vitamins you like before dealing with morning sickness, etc, since some people say their prenatal makes them nauseated. Good luck with TTC! :goodluck:

When I told my OB that we were trying this month and I had just started prenatals she said that's great but ideally I would take them for 3-6 months before TTC. So I definitely think it's best to continue taking them daily until you get pregnant!

I took folic acid for about 6 months before ttc. Then Prenatals through 6 months of ttc, an early miscarriage, more ttc, my pregnancy, and 9 months so far of breastfeeding. I don't plan to stop taking them before we ttc again. So many Prenatals.

My doctor told me it is not necessary to take the prenatal before becoming pregnant, however it IS necessary to be taking folic acid. She wanted me to be on folic acid for 3 months, ideally, before even TTC.

I started off just on folic acid, but I have been taking the prenatal now because I wanted to see if it had any side effects before becoming pregnant. My doctor told me that if the prenatal made me nauseous or constipated to stop taking it and switch to just folic acid. They have been fine though.

Do you ladies take prenatal vitamins during your entire cycle or only during the TWW? AF came today and I impulsively took one this morning but then thought maybe it wasn't necessary. Does taking a vitamin all month help boost your folic acid levels in general? Or does it only really matter when you've potentially got a bean in the burrito?

When you're ttc 400 mcg is all you need. Once you get pregnant your OB may recommend more--especially if you have a history of neural tube defects.

Hi Ladies,
I recently went to my annual GYN exam. I told her that I was going to go off of BCP in the new year and we'd be going TTC. We discussed vitamins and the importance of folic acid (especially since I'm older...40). She said that 400 mg. was sufficient, which is in my daily vitamin. Does that seem high enough?
Thanks ya'll!

@Blushink - I'm not concerned with the amount. He said that you can't have too much since you pee whatever you don't absorb. He also said that it was to prevent risk of miscarriage which is the same as the prenatal amount. It is a bit expensive though. I think it was 23 for a bottle, but I have to take 4 a day! I just was curious if anyone else was told the same...

Nope, my RE just recommends 800 mcg per day. I always thought higher doses were for if you had a family history of spinal disorders. I'm sure he has a reason, especially if it's prescription, so I'd just ask.

Are you at risk? Folic acid isto prevent malformation in the spine the first 8 weeks of pregnancy. Maybe high levels of it helps with conception. Who knows. But 4 seems like alot. But maybe you have a history of some sort and it's best to be extra careful. Why not simply ask the doctor the Reason for the high dosage.

nope! mine said 1mg for each baby so i need to take 2mg. i got prescriptions but now it's increasing $30/mo, so i'm just going to take extra supplements (i have separate folic acid pills). 4mg sounds like a lot. i'm sure he has his reasons though.

My doctor prescribed 4mg of folic acid to go along with my clomid cycle next month. He said that anything over 1mg requires a prescription and that he likes women to have between 4 and 5mg. So I'll get 4 from the prescription and 400 or 800 mcg more from my prenatal to make it close to 5.

Has anyone else done this?
