I would say this sounds normal to me! In those early weeks I practically lived in my nursing chair. My DD would nurse for an hour + if I let her between eating and comfort nursing. We would sit there and watch show after show on netflix. Your DD is helping regulate your milk supply and she lets your body know how much she needs.

Thanks for all the reassurance ladies! I was just worried I wasn't making enough fatty milk for her maybe!

@NovBaby1112: @MungBean: The bottle(s) DH will give her at night are still pumped milk. But even then, she's been going through them so fast I can hardly keep up! I was trying to just pump once a day to build a little supply for when we go out or to freeze, but DH wants me to get a few hours of consecutive sleep at night.

@runsyellowlites: Thanks lady for all the info!

Totally normal & even aside from growth spurts as a species it's normal for us to nurse frequently, almost constantly, in infancy... even moreso as a newborn.

Kellymom has great info on breastfeeding mechanics & tendencies in newborns/young infants:
http://kellymom.com/bf/normal/newborn-nursing/
http://kellymom.com/bf/normal/frequent-nursing/

And this article has helped me too! (It's on sttn but hits some great points on breastfeeding mechanics)

It all sounds very normal to me! I remember around the 2-3 week mark being so stressed and worried that LO wanted to eat constantly. Like the PPs have said, it probably has to do with a growth spurt and letting baby nurse as she wants is the best way to get your supply regulated.

If possible, I'd suggest not giving supplementing w/a bottle (unless there are growth issues). This way, your body will establish supply much more quickly.

Agreed with others, it sounds normal but it won't last forever. For trying to keep baby awake while eating, someone suggested to me to wipe DS's feet with a cold wipe. Other things that worked included nursing him skin to skin, unlatching and waking him, stroking his cheek, and having DH bug him.

I remember feeling like this when M was a newborn. I swear the girl cluster fed the entire first 6 weeks of life. I thought the same things as you- I wasn't producing enough, she was insatiable and unsatisfied, my milk wasnt fatty enough and filling her, etc- but just turns out I had a newborn that wanted to be attached to my boob 24/7 and clusterfed the whole 6 weeks of life. I remember wondering if eating would ever get to where I could feed her every 2 or 3 hours, then magically, it did! It may seem like she isn't getting enough from you, but trust me, she is...she is jyst establishing your milk supply and now I have TONS of milk for her. I would avoid bottle feeding though, as that can trick your body into thinking it doesn't need to make more milk, and will only delay your bodys efforts to establish your milk supply that your baby will need. Trust me that this will pass and feedings will get more regular.

I think it sounds like you have more than enough milk.

Remember that as babies Get older the get stronger and more skilled at nursing. We went from 30-40 minutes per side to 10 minutes total when she was near six months.

It also sounds like the age where they start wanting comfort. Letting her suck even if she isn't eating is good because you build milk supply and you're keeping her happy. But I understand you can't be strapped to her forever.

@shopaholic: I am having the opposite problem. It is hard to get R to eat at least for 10 mins. Feel like it is a battle to get her to eat for 12 mins at a time. No matter what we try she falls asleep. But I guess she is getting enough good since she poops and pees all day and night!

"Mom! I wasn't done with that!"

Sounds like a growth spurt to me. At that point LO would spend 30-40 minutes nursing per session and would eat again about an hour later. I was spending 5-6 hours a day feeding her. It has tapered off and now (almost 11 weeks) she's down to about 1.75-2 hours of nursing a day.

Pick up a good book, the remote, a bottle of water and hunker down. Girl is a'growin.

Remember that she's helping you regulate your milk supply. It's rough early on, but milk works from supply and demand. She's demanding right now and it's exhausting, breastfeeding is about all I remember doing that first month! I did have to work hard at keeping him actively nursing and not sleeping early on.

@FutureMrsMcK: @dagret: She probably actively sucks about 2/3 of the time, with little breaks in between. Every time I think she's done and try to take her off, she will clamp down and suck super hard and like she is so hungry again!

@dagret: I feel like she's been going through this growth spurt since Day 9! Can it be continuous?

Is she actively eating when she's on the boob? I mean is she pulling and swallowing or it is more like flutter-sucking? E could easily be on the boob for 30+ minutes when he was a newborn, but half the time he was comfort nursing, not eating. I could tell because he wasn't swallowing nearly as often (maybe once every few minutes) and his sucks were lighter/shallower.

Here's some info I found helpful: http://kellymom.com/bf/normal/newborn-nursing/

Oh my gosh ladies - last night was TOUGH! Between crazy feeding and not sleeping... Little Miss K over here was particularly fussy. She's been a champion eater for about a week now, yesterday with her longest time at one boob (28 min.) I feel like she eats a LOT more than babies who are older than her! Literally she will be on the boob for 10-15 min. usually. Take a break and want more (the other side) within the same hour. Evenings and early mornings = cluster feeding times. To the point where I don't even think I have any more milk and DH has been giving her 2 additional bottle feedings in the middle of the night. The girl is INSATIABLE!

I almost worry I don't produce enough milk for her. When I pump, the foremilk comes out fast and I always drip everywhere if I haven't fed or pumped in a couple of hours. But the flow seems to stop really quickly (around min. 5-7). I've been trying to pump up to 20 min. to see if I get the second let-down I've read about. I think I've only seen it happen once or twice, but usually nothing comes out past the 10 min. mark. Not sure if K is only getting a bunch of foremilk and not enough hindmilk from when I BF or even when I pump. I usually get about 3 oz. combined from one session. And she will nurse ~ 20-30 min. combined from both breasts.

Does this all sound normal? Or is Miss K just really, really hungry? She is 2 1/2 weeks old and I am really curious about her growth when she sees the pediatrician this week.
