Just to add a different perspective, we sleep trained using Ferber's method (CIO with checks) to get him down to 1 night waking and to get him to fall asleep on his own at the beginning of the night. We did this at 6.5 months--I would try to wait a bit if I were you, 4 months is a time of big changes in sleep and it's possible in a few weeks he mights start reducing night wakings and go to sleep more easily. But otherwise, it sounds like he's developing sleep crutches that aren't working for your family any more. I HIGHLY recommend reading Ferber's book "Solve your child's sleep problem" even if you don't go for his method. There's lots of interesting info in there about infant sleep, patterns, etc.

For naps, we nap trained at 5 months and I basically just sat in the room and shushed him and comforted him while sitting in a chair next to him. We swaddle weaned at the same time and I introduced a lovey.

Does he take a paci? or have a lovey? Also, don't be discouraged if ST is bad nights 1, 2, and even 3--I think the majority of people see an improvement after that.

Also, what time is bedtime, and how long are his awake periods during the day?

(sorry for the novel! :) )/

My LO is an active bubba (13 months) and still seems to need the sucking action of nursing to wind down enough to sleep. During the day I do find she nurses down faster if we have a little quiet time just prior to her nap so maybe try adding an extra step into your nap / bedtime routine?

We didn't sleep train, but when our LO was that young, a crazy early bedtime worked wonders. Eventually we had her going down at 6 PM and sleeping until 6 AM, with 1-2 wake ups. I had heard that sleep begets sleep and an overtired baby will wake more- sure enough that was true for our LO!

We did No Cry Sleep Solution at 5 months as well. It worked very well!

That sounds like a normal amount of times for a 4 month old EBF baby to be waking.

@mamamoon: That sounds like a normal hunger schedule for a 4 month old but if you're wanting to work on him falling to sleep on his own, we did no cry sleep solution around 5 months and it was a really positive experience.

Night one of "sleep training"... total failure!
My LO is four months old, EBF, and an extremely happy, active baby...but will only fall asleep after either being nursed to sleep and bounced/jiggled for 20 minutes or just jiggling alone for 30 mins +. It is driving me and my husband to exhaustion both physically, and mentally.
During the night (starting from 10pm on) he wakes up two or three times a night to nurse, and then falls right back to sleep with barely any bouncing/rocking/jiggling etc. The only time we really struggle is for naps, and beginning of "bed time" which we try to start around 7:30pm.

I guess I'm just at my wits end and I need some support!
What sleep training methods worked for you mamas?
